Roster
If that’s a complete listing of all the Rule 5 eligible players this fall, then I no longer have any concern about adding Justin Smoak to the roster later this year and using a 40-man roster spot on him.
I wouldn’t lose any sleep over exposing any of the following players to the Rule 5 draft:
Greg Golson
Pedro Strop
Dustin Nippert
Michael Kirkman
Beau Jones
Willie Eyre
Matt Nevarez
Also, I doubt that Byrd, Blalock or Jennings will be under contract at the time of the Rule 5 draft. Jennings might be, but the other two aren’t coming back next year.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ben Sheets on the roster by this fall, though, so that would take up a spot.

I feel strangely uncomfortable
with the idea of you as the steward of the 40- call me overly cautious. I nominate dirkatron…

Well,
in that Case Lemon will be added to the 40, and probably the 25 also.

Most of those guys would be taken in the Rule V
Why give up some of those guys for absolutely nothing just to give Smoak a cup of coffee at the end of the season?

Really?
Eyre and Nippert aren’t very good. They’ll probably be NRI’s about three or four times in their careers.
Golson is a bust.
Strop hasn’t shown anything. Someone might take a flyer on him, but does it really matter.
I don’t think Kirkman, Jones or Nevarez get taken. Kirkman and Jones haven’t shown that much, and Nevarez would be really young to get picked.

Golson a bust?
Really? A 23yo in AAA with a line of .277/.331/.375 is a bust.

Absolutely
A first round pick in 2004 still in AAA in 2009 and hitting 277/.331/.375 is definitely a bust.
The only reason the Rangers got him was that he is a bust.

So, you believe....
a guy taken in the first round and hitting .277/.331/.375 in AAA five years later was a good pick?
Why don’t you address the point I was making rather than being a smartass?

full disclosure
this is the same guy that had Nelson Cruz labeled as a bust prior to this season.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

IIRC
oc thought Cruz was likely to get injured and/or worn down because he has played year round for a couple years straight.
Darrell Mc and FuturePants just thought Cruz flat out sucked.

Cruz
He has been a lot better than I expected.
That said, his major league history does have other periods where he has hit really well, but not been able to sustain it. I hope that his June isn’t the beginning of a return to the kind of hitter he has been over his entire major league career.

Not really talking about Eyre or Nippert
Those guys will be FAs if the Rangers don’t keep them on the 40.
Golson is a 23 yo with all them tools. At the very least, he’s a great defensive sub, pinch runner option for some team to have while they take a chance on his bat reaching his potential. As RangerMad posted, he’s been holding his own in AAA though definitely a work in progress.
Strop is an injury risk, but he’s a great talent if he’s healthy. This team doesn’t have many great bullpen options, especially in the upper levels.

Hit post too soon
Jones has walk issues, but could be used as a LOOGY at the very least. He’s already in Frisco which makes him an attractive option. Kirkman’s holding his own in Frisco right now as a 22 year old after dominating in the Cal League. Again, some team will take a chance on him.
Nevarez is a long shot to be picked IMO, but that could change depending on what the Rangers do with him for the rest of the season. I doubt he gets taken, but I don’t know much about him to be able to say that with certainty.

Huh?
Most of those guys would be taken in the Rule V
First of all, Strop, Nippert and Eyre would be minor league free agents, so talking about them as Rule 5 guys is irrelevant…a team that would take them in the Rule 5 draft would just give them a major league deal.
Golson would have to clear waivers, but if he did, he’s a Rule 5 candidate.
Jones could be, too, but I think he’s not a slam dunk, and a lot depends on how he performs the rest of the way.
Nevarez and Kirkman seem like remote possibilities at best.

Nippert has already been DFA'd once
so I think he would take FA in the off season if the Rangers drop him.

Golson and Strop
Golson would have to clear waivers to be exposed to the Rule 5, and someone would claim him.
Strop can be a minor league free agent, so you’d have to re-sign him in the first place.

fantastic review of the 40
makes it pretty obvious who we won’t see around here next year…but would this team trade a Padilla, Jones, Vizquel, Jennings or (if anybody would take him) Guardado this year while still in contention? It seems like we won’t trade any of them, but rather roll through the rest of the season with them and then cut bait with minimal return at best. Although Padilla would have to be a Type B free agent, right?
