USA is heartbroken after throwing away potential greatness. Rest of the world laughs as they called the Spain result a fluke and were proven right. We don’t even make it out of the group stage in the world cup.

US soccer still sucks

and will never reach the top of world soccer. I hate saying never, but soccer just isn’t picked up here at young ages in the volumes of other countries around the world, so obviously the talent pool is less to choose from. We just have to turn a few foreigners into american citizens.

I hate this attitude.

We made it to a final, got close as shit to winning. Do you know how many other teams/countries DID NOT make it to the final? We are on the world’s stage competing and hanging in. One team finished ahead of us in this tournament, and we’re not at “the top of world soccer”? The top only consists of one team?

Haters

The fact is that there are plenty of countries with great soccer histories that have not won the WC: Holland, Spain, Mexico, etc. Even England and France have only won it once. Winning the WC is really hard to do. Just because we haven’t reached the top doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been an amazing amount of progress or that US soccer sucks.

the Americans don’t have the depth and quality of soccer talent that other teams around the world. that is what I am saying, and if you think otherwise, you are blind.

But the reality is that Brasil is just way, way ridiculously better than us.

Sucks to lead 2-0 at half and lose, but shit happens.

Plenty of positives to take out of this tournament as a whole.

got the big win, got some exposure, and helped the seeding in the WC. Would it been nice to win the tournament? Sure, but this was still a great overall showing.

And he hated it. Why do you think he came back?

I agree, playing at the European pace would do a professional player some good.

There’s a lot of Americans that don’t like it. It’s either too fast, or they don’t like the cold weather, or they miss their buds…

This isn’t exactly breaking news, I don’t think…

I could have sworn, I read an article and Donovan is quoted as saying that he didn't like playing in Europe for all three of the reasons i just mentioned

You interpret that as: ’He’s just not good enough to hang with the Euros’
I interpret it as: ’I’m just a spoiled American kid’

So basically we’re both saying he’s fucktard.

Donovan

He’s definitely good enough to play in Europe, without question. He just needs to man up and stick it out over there. He might not be guaranteed playing time, but he should just fight his way into the starting 11 with Bayern Munich or another squad.

He would develop better if he played in Europe. But I find it hard to get mad at a guy for not wanting to live in Germany over LA. Maybe it would have played out differently if he had gone to England, where the culture shock would not have been as bad, or Spain, which plays a style that fits his game better. But it’s his life..

Josey's fine where he is.

If Villareal gives him some games, that’s a decent place to be in terms of development. Nihat’s gone, Rossi’s got a good chance of going to Italy this summer…he has a chance to see some action over there.

I’d really like to see Bradley and Onyewu head to the prem and get some quality instruction.

by GhettoBear04 on Jun 28, 2009 3:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why do you say that?

I’d prefer EPL, but not if it meant he’s the fourth centerback for a team.

by GhettoBear04 on Jun 28, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think he'd be the fourth CB for a bottom-half table side.

I say that about Serie A because really, how many young non-italian defenders do you know of that go there? Italians generally bring in defenders who have already been developed. Onyewu’s a beast physically, but he needs a lot of work with positioning and the other mental aspects of the game. The best place to do that is England, IMO.

As frustrating as this is...

…it’s such a greater feeling than after the last world cup. It was so frustrating to try to figure out why the US couldn’t even be competitive on the field with second tier teams (not even the big guns). If the US is now a team that consistently beats the scrubs and darkhorses, splits against the second tier and plays competitive games against the big teams, they have finally made the next step that so many of us have been waiting for.

It probably will take many years at this level before we can hope to really be on level with Spain/Italy/Brazil/Argentina, but not being a scrub makes it so much more likely for the average US sports fan to jump on the bandwagon.

Good game

The US played well, especially in the first half, but Brazil was the better team and deserved to win (unlike the Spain game, in which the US clearly deserved the win). Not having Bradley really hurt. The US is a good team with a handful of very good players, but I don’t think they have the depth right now to win a big tournament. Also, although I think Bob Bradley is a pretty good coach, I disagreed with his first two subs. Too defensive and conservative, especially after Brazil had just equalized. I’m disappointed for the US, but it’s a quality tournament for them to build on.

I guess I am a soccer snob but I can't watch the MLS

There are certainly a few players in the MLS that are good enough to play in Europe, but on the whole the level of talent is not good enough for me. I have been to a few Dallas Burn/FC Dallas games and I had a good time, but other than attending a game in person, I have no interest in watching it on television. Kind of like how I won’t watch the WNBA or the D-League, but have no problem watching the NBA. I need a good product if I am going to invest my time in it.

by uthornfan on Jun 29, 2009 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh i agree and its taken me a lot of analysis of the league to figure out where it isnt up to par

my conclusion is that the refs arre the biggest problem in MLS. Is it a less talented league in general? sure, but talent can increase leaguewide and has over time. what i see as the problem though is that even if MLS had a talent like CR7 or the like, they wouldnt get calls that are fouls in other leagues around the world. talent, ball control, and positioning arent rewarded and size and physical dominance take precedence over technical ability for fouls being called or not called in the states. This continues to not reward technical ability so that development is stunted and larger less skilled players get squad time in place of more skilled, smaller players. And the cause is all officiating. As crazy as it sounds if they just traded refs here for a few seasons with a more skill oriented nation, it would change MLS forever. The league is improving, american soccer is improving and the first glimpses of the academy system (works similar to the venezuelan and DR academies that the rangers run) are coming into the pro game here.

It can be tough to watch, and i dont make any effort to take my friends to FCD games who may potentially like footy, b/c the level of play just doesnt help me sell my buddies the sport. but the one thing i have taken from europe that i wont let slide is “Support your Local” You can follow whoever, you can love whatever team you follow, but if you truly love the sport, you gotta support your local, and that means showing some support for FCD. Hell, tickets are $5 and parking is free. I think they sell $1 beers for an hour before game time. If we ever wanna watch top class footy on american soil, its gonna be because we supported our local teams and the sport professionally.

i know how you feel though.
