Things I'm tired of hearing from the booth during games.

1)  That Vernon Wells or Hunter Pence are from the D/FW area when we are playing Toronto or Houston

2)  How super-awesome David Eckstein is because of how much heart he has.  Particularly in the middle of a game where the Rangers are playing like crap.

3)  Anything about Twitter.

4)  How great a game some scrub pitcher is throwing against the Rangers.  Scrub pitchers aren't throwing great games right now, guys...the Rangers offense is sucking, plain and simple.

Point

There are eight venues to make your thoughts known. The least of which is Twitter. Tom covered it completely. TAG don’t tweet. Nor do I, nor will I. Just because something is “there” doesn’t make it useful. It equates to commenting to no one in particular during a food riot, or pissing into the ocean during a hurricane. Total waste of time, energy, and bandwidth. Of course, that’s just an opinion.

I don't understand why Cruz...

wasn’t in the lineup or didn’t PH for Jones in the 9th. This team has 3 decent hitters in Kinsler, MY, and Cruz. The offense is struggling, so has Cruz, but you don’t take away one of the few good bats you have.

Basically I think it would be better if Hamilton comes back and has minimal or no impact because then maybe the front office will take steps to fix the offense, which might give us a chance if we make the playoffs.

But if Hamilton comes back and takes off, they’ll do nothing and we’ll either miss the playoffs cause this offensive core still sucks, or they’ll just get steamrolled in the playoffs.

This is like Josey saying that Hank Blalock’s 84 ABs against lefties last season means something.

He’s 30 years old and has gotten off to a nice start in a part-time role.

There’s no reason to think he’s going to be a .391 OBP guy here, given his history. And given that we have Davis and Smoak and Ramirez for the DH/1B roles already for next season, he’s superfluous beyond 2009.

He's not flippable this offseason

He’s probably non-tendered this offseason.

He’s looking at getting $5-6 million in arbitration, and he’s not getting that on the open market.

So if you are trading for him, it should be with the expectation that you’ll get nothing for him and let him go this offseason.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 28, 2009 10:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He's a pretty solid offensive player

wOBA’s in the mid .360’s three years straight coming into 2009. With 2 years of control left, I don’t see why he wouldn’t be flippable to a team looking for DH/OF/1B help. It’s not like he’s Hank Blalock or something.

It's not like he's Bobby Abreu...

…who got 1 year, $5 million. He’s not as good as Abreu.

Willingham is a nice bat who can’t play the field well at any position. He’s not in demand.

Guys like Willingham aren’t getting big money. A team isn’t going to give you a significant prospect ofr the privilege of paying Willingham $5-6 million to be a bench bat or decent DH for them.

by Horns130 on Jun 28, 2009 10:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, he's probably been about the same as Abreu the last couple years

Abreu’s put up wOBA’s of .360 and .368 the two prvious seasons and can’t play the field well anymore either.

So I don’t buy this notion that Willingham is a worthless investment.

I'm not saying he's worthless

I’m saying it is foolish, given the economic situation in baseball right now, to expect you’re going to be able to trade him this offseason for anything of value.

You want to send Kasey Kiker to Washington so he can be the full time DH for the final three months of the year and then be non-tendered, that’s fine. But don’t pretend that you’re going to get the value back that you gave up to get him by trading him this offseason.

Me, I’d rather go with Smoak or Max in another month than trade for Willingham.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 28, 2009 10:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if Max keeps showing he's recovered his stroke, I'd happily go with him and forget Willingham

Smoak I wanna see at AAA first, but if moves up to OKC and dominates in the next month then yeah, we’ll go with him.

But I’d like to see them render the point moot first before deciding that there’s no reason to trade for Willingham.

Fifth highest OPS on team in June
2nd highest OPS on team for year.

I’m not sure he is the biggest problem on this team. You’d certainly like more output from him, but you can say that across the board. Getting rid of Hank probably has more payoff.

Forget the significance of good trade or bad trade

The agenda is to strengthen and stabilize the capabilities of the team for years to come. Any attempted “quick fix” for this year only does two things:
- detracts from the ongoing plan
- takes talent away from future years

I clearly understand that, even if this team’s offense right now couldn’t score enough runs to win an American Legion regional.

You can have both, or at least try

If you have a quick fix to get the Rangers in the playoffs this year without detracting from the ongoing plan, go for it. The Rangers have already unsuccessfully tried Holland in the rotation. After a couple of outings, it’s time to try Feliz in the bullpen. And Smoak as a roster replacement for Jones.

That was the reason for my comment

No deal is a good deal, value or not, if it takes away from what you are trying to do. Oh wait … if part of selling a team equates to adding up all the value on the roster, maybe so. However, that doesn’t work (fantasy or real baseball). Step 1 – forget deals altogether. Step 2 – if and when you need a bat or an arm you can’t supply from within, and doing so gives you a competitive advantage in your division, think about it. Then subtract the negative value of making any change, and forget it. Step 3 – if it’s July 30 and you are seven games up in your division, and – big and – can stimulate either your offense, freshen your defense, or improve your pitching – and (second big and) – if you can afford to send out prospect assets – and, if you can keep the new talent for at least another season or extend him – then make an offer. Deals are never, ever simply a value move.

The Problem is

The Rangers weren’t supposed to compete this year next year was the year and this is what all of us here were looking toward. Now it seems they got here a year early and we think they should be world beaters this year. Come on they are young and they are going through growing pains learning how to win. We all have lost sight of this.

Every1 needs to get over it

This is the exact reason i enjoyed our hot start so much, and soaked every second of it.

its simple facts, we started off against a weak early schedule, angels got rampaged by injury. A’s rotations arms all fell off. We were in a good spot to start off hot. We did.

Now we are back to facing the reality of what this teams weaknesses are and developing our youth slowly. No sense in panic and i think we all knew what we are when we were kicking ass.

I Agree Jayslick

The bottom line is the Rangers hit the perfect storm of good fortune the first part of the season. Weak division of four teams, two not real strong. Then the Angels have devastating injuries plus a tragic loss of a pitcher. Add to that the relatively weak schedule the Rangers had as the outset. Make no mistake, they are improved, particularly the pitching (Nolan’s influence IMO) but lady luck was a Ranger for the first couple of months of the season. What we have to do now is hope the real battle won’t be with the Mariners for third place.

Foolish consistency is the hobgobblin of little minds - Emerson

I agree in part.

I don’t think that Detroit, Toronto, or New York were easy teams to beat. This team has done a complete 180. For the last few years, we have had a hot offense, and average defense, but no pitching. Now we have good pitching and defense, but the offense has gone to crap. But to say that the FO should make a trade for a quick fix to the offense is short-sighted, and completely against what dthe plan has been for the last 2 years.

I'd keep him in the rotation...

and Jennings in the ’pen.

Problem with JJ as a starter is he really only has one good pitch, his slider. His 90 mph FB is very hittable. I think he can make it through the order once with his slider and be fine. After that I’m not sure. He has had success in the ‘pen and I’d leave him there for now. Hunter earned at least 1 more start tonight imo.

Same for me

I really dont trust or like JJ in the rotation at all

hitters are going to lay off that slider when they see it more, and then he will walk guys too often and be forced to throw his shitty fastball

i just dont get the love/desire to see JJ start

I hope so

He looked good today. Jennings to the rotation would hurt both the rotation and the bullpen. I agree with the others that think no way can JJ be effective more than once through a lineup, throwing 50%+ sliders.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

lightening joke moment

An Angels fan dies and goes up the stairway to heaven.

He knocks on the door at the top and the door is opened by St. Peter, who’s wearing a Rangers shirt.

“Oh shit” says the Angels fan, “But I’ve been a good man, really!”
“Oh yeah, how?” asks Peter.
“Well I gave $10 this year to Comic Relief, $10 to Red Cross and $10 to Children in Need.”

“Alright, I’ll have a word with him upstairs and we’ll see what happens.”

So St. Peter goes off to see God and leaves the Angels fan waiting.

About an hour later St. Peter has returned.

was at the game

just got back from the game tonight and i wanted to chime in with my observations. First… there was ZERO wind at least toward right field (was in section 46 front row so i wasnt under the upper deck) … it was muggy as hell in the park. It just seemed every ball was we hit would either carry far enough for an outfielder to get to it or get knocked down by something as it approached the wall. The ball salty hit late in the game that ended up at the wall looked from my angle that it had enough to carry over, but then it just died… the jet stream tonight was non existent.

On our line up i really think we need to start shuffling around players… if we arent hitting with this line up why not shift players in the first part of the order (Kinsler young mainly) into different spots…

by Maysin on Jun 28, 2009 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i was thinking of the same line up. right now kinsler is hitting like a #3 not a #1 ( trying to hit for power not contact). Andrus has been working counts typically. Young is a #2 hitter not a #3 cruz was tearing the ball up for a bit at #4. Wash needs to stop shifting him to a different spot every other game. I don’t like salty and davis batting back to back because they are strike out prone… that could easily kill a rally

In his last 3, he is 3 for 11 with 3 doubles.

His line in May was very, very good. For a guy that is used to being an everyday starter and yet only sees the field once per week, his bat is looking pretty good.

His playing time has been baffling.

The only thing I could really guess was that they were hoping Salty would take off and they could trade him at inflated value. Obviously, Salty’s bat is proving to be as bad as it looked like it would be over the last couple of seasons. At this point, I don’t see why they don’t have Tea playing at least two out of every five games.

I'm in 100% agreement with you

and if either seems to heat up and get hot, the other one can ride the pine. Its tough to see why you would go with a 1st string/2nd string catcher with Salty being the first string if thats all he is giving you.

Andruw

spelling Nelson Cruz for a night…okay I guess, but running him out there to park Cruz on the bench pisses me off. Happens one more time and I’ll fire up the DFA Andruw bandwagon.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Well duh

But Boggs isn’t a solution to anything. Do you think so?

I wouldn’t object to giving him Jones playing time but I doubt it would help anything short or long term…. just trying to throw players against the wall until someone sticks..

I don’t really care until its deemed Smoak is ready, then it needs to be him.

In Jone's case, I'm inclined to think his hot start was just a fluke

For players with some kind of a recent track record of playing well it might mean something, but for Jones?

The next time this team brings a guy up from Oklahoma, it needs to be (and probably will be) Borbon.

Borbon needs to replace byrd

Borbon in center, Hammy in left, Cruz in right or vice versa. But then again doesn’t do a whole lot for the offense, boggs isn’t exactly crushing it in AAA.

Then work smoak in.. depends on if Davis gets it together on how that situation works.

Which might not help the offense much either immediately. Sigh.

The best chance at offense is one Josh Hamilton.

the preceding post was a great success.

I go for Hamilton at DH

Let Byrd and Murphy split time in LF. Thta is their best role. That gets AJ and Blalock out of the lineup.

by slc ranger on Jun 28, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Does it matter either way? They are both prototypical RFs and one has to play LF if hammy isnt in CF.

Granted while Hammy supposedly has the arm its Cruz that seems to make the throws.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DSheppard on Jun 28, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess it doesn't...

really matter. Which is why I don’t see why they would move Hamilton to RF and Cruz to LF when they could just move Hamilton to LF and leave Cruz alone. I think they both have good arms and can cover the ground in either COF spot.

which makes more suited for RF, especially on throws to 3B.

This is a confusing statement.
He is a leadoff hitter.

Based on what? Historically, his plate discipline is pretty bad. I’m fine with sticking him in the 8th or 9th spot and letting him do his thing on defense.

But then again, we’ve seen how it’s possible to win a few games without any offense whatsoever this month, so maybe neither.

Isn't it time

to give Blalock the same message the Rangers gave Padilla?

Put him on waivers, if someone claims him, they claim him. If he stays with the team, let him know that the Rangers need to see more “old Hank” who uses the field a bit more.

Considering how cash strapped this team is, I don’t see a lot of downside to him getting claimed away, and given his performance, I don’t see a lot of risk to the team, either.

I actually like this idea.

Something has to happen to shake up the offense, and getting rid of the dead weight is a good place to start. It wouldn’t hurt my feelings if they did the same thing with AJ as well.

by Athos on Jun 29, 2009 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The reason I'd do it to Hank

instead of AJ, is that so far we don’t hear any whining from AJ when he rides pine. We heard the “I’m an everyday player” from Hank recently, despite his performance.

However, if we have 2 folks ready to go to plug in, I’m game to have the both hung out there.

Rangers Broadcast

The most annoying thing is when they go fucking split screen during live action so that Knoxie can finish interviewing some Blue Hair from Mansfield who sews quilts using old Ranger game worn Jerseys and gives one away to ex cons every time a Ranger gets a walk.

Seriously, NO JIM F KNOX during live action. And Lewin is a fucking caricature of himself.

Adam Lambert is indeed a rock god,so suck it.

Lewin has streaks of good nights and bad.

I can deal with Josh. Jim Knox needs to be retired to reporting on things I don’t watch.

And Tom needs to stop being an apologist when the Rangers are sucking.

watching a Ranger

is starting to feel like sitting at a Maverick game. Do we really need a “bit” every inning? There seems to be an onslaught of guests in the booth, Knoxie segments, Twitter and email the booth spiffs, etc.

Idiocracy already has a foothold on our society. Apparently baseball is just tooooo “boring” to have a straight forward broadcast. The production needs more electrolytes to satisfy genpop.
