Julio Borbon called up
Haven't seen it anywhere, but at least according to a release that I just got from University of Tennessee baseball...
Former Tennessee baseball All-America performer Julio Borbon was called up to the Major Leagues by the Texas Rangers Monday. A standout centerfielder for the Volunteers from 2005-07, Borbon was drafted 35th overall by the Rangers in the 2007 MLB Draft and has been starring this summer for the Class AAA Oklahoma City Redhawks of the Pacific Coast League.
“This is a very important day for me and my family,” Borbon said. “It is so exciting and satisfying to see my dream come true. To think that just two years ago I was at Tennessee and now I’m experiencing this lifelong dream—it’s hard to describe how I’m feeling right now. I owe thanks to so many people for helping to guide me along the way.”Borbon ranked sixth in the PCL in hits, tied for sixth in triples (5), eighth in runs, tied for ninth in stolen bases and was 25th in batting average.
Texas Rangers Director of Player Development Scott Servais had an opportunity to personally evaluate Borbon and other Texas prospects during a visit to Oklahoma City last week. After being notified of his promotion, Borbon flew to Dallas on Monday and is unsure of when he’ll see his first action with the Rangers.
“I’ll be ready whenever they need me,” Borbon said.
With Borbon’s promotion, there are now 10 former Vols presently suiting up in Major League Baseball. He becomes the 35th Vol ever to play in the Majors and the third player from UT’s 2005 NCAA College World Series team to reach the big leagues (joining Luke Hochevar and Chase Headley).

Wasn’t expecting that to happen. Maybe thats an indication that the team is finally fed up with Murphy/Byrd/Cruz/Jones production…

it's pretty awesome
getting a top speed threat/good defender in CF that gets hits and gets on base…and pretty soon getting a 100 mph stud in the pen are two game changing moves…add Hammy’s bat in a week, and we’ve seen a pretty drastic makeover

Not really aimed at you.
I like the Sauce, everyone knows this.
I just think it’s lame that anytime me and my fellow LSB participants in our fantasy league make mention of said league on this board we get the obligatory “Nobody cares about your fantasy team”.
I get that it’s horribly annoying when someone homer off the Rangers and then someone chimes in with a random “Well, it helps my fantasy team”, or when someone just randomly wants to discuss his fantasy team or whatever, but it’s a league I’m in with several dudes from the board and there was a rush to pick up Borbon when this news broke, I really don’t see why us discussing it is worthy of a “nobody cares”.

It's repetitive (something all boards suffer from) and there are already boards on the fantasy league's website. You know, to talk shit and what not about each other's fantasy teams.

I don't think they would bring him up unless there was a plan in place to make sure he plays everyday
This isn’t Boggs we are talking about. Borbon has been dubbed our “CF of the future” pretty much since he was drafted. I don’t think the Rangers would bring that type of player up unless they had discussed and settled on him playing everyday

So hopefully they don’t try to platoon him.
by Athos on Jun 29, 2009 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree
He is leadoff guy. His avg is lower against lefties as his slg but that is not his job. His job is to get on base. I wouldnt mind if they just played in CF, batted him leadoff (or 9 wouldnt be too bad i guess) and said the job is yours.

I was thinking more of a young Kenny Lofton.
Griffey had the arm tool working pretty hard as a youngster.
Borbon fits more into the “speedy as hell” kind of CF’er rather than the Griffey/Andruw pretty fast but great at everything else kind of defensive CF’ers.
Either way, though… it should be fun to watch a real CF’er patrol the ballpark for the first time in a long time.

I think this season he’d put up something in the realm of .285/.335/.370
Nothing spectacular, but fine for a defense-y CF’er getting his feet wet in the show.
Of course he’ll prolly play once a week so we can get us some more sweet Andruw Jones and Marlon Byrd at bats.

that being in the majors doesn’t mean you are going to get playing time.
Thats one of the reasons I don’t mind seeing AJ kept around. He hasn’t whined too much about lack of playing time.

I’m pessimistic he’ll get any playing time. Seems like it could’ve been Boggs that was recalled, except that he was sent out less than 10 days ago.

Why do people compare Boggs and Borbon regardling playing time
Borbon was drafted high and given a ML deal right off the bat and the talk ever since has been he is our “CF of the future”.
Boggs was a nice player who had a breakout year in the minors and then had a shitty year in the majors last year. Boggs is not an everyday player for years down the road in many peoples eyes. Borbon is.

Mostly because many young players have been put on the bench to stay.
CD and Andrus are exceptions.
Boggs has been sitting, ditto Duran. Who’s to say Borbon will get more than one in CF start before middle of July with Byrd already getting all of the playing time out there and Hamilton due back later this week. There really isn’t a place for Borbon, just as there wasn’t a place for Boggs or Duran, except as emergency players.
I still think they would’ve brought Boggs up ahead of Borbon had Boggs not been sent down so recently.

You ignored his point though
Boggs and Duran were not considered top tier prospects or likely to be full time starters. Andrus and CD are the exceptions.. and the other two top tier future of the team type prospects… not a coincidence. There are some guys you promote because you need a body and some guys you promote because you think they can help.

Hit the nail right on the head
And I think most of the reason Boggs sat is because last year he got everyday playing time and did not do very well.
When you bring up players who you feel are cornerstone type players you don’t sit them on the bench. I think the Rangers view Borbon as that type of player.

Still don't think it matters. They have to make a spot for him in the OF.
They made a spot for Andrus by moving MY. CD had a spot because of an injury. No space has been made for Borbon.

I want to make sure that i have an accurate view of his D. I have heard that he can cover a lot of ground in the OF but sometimes takes some bad routes and an avg at best arm. Also, that he will probably end up being a plus defender in CF. Am i right/wrong?

The Rangers are only going to carry so many outfielders.
For now: Cruz, Borbon, Hamilton, Murphy, Byrd, Jones. In the event of a move of one or more of those players, Boggs had been discussed as a possible 4th outfielder for the rest of this season, platooning with Murphy. Hard to see that happening now, unless Borbon is only up for a short stay. Otherwise, Boggs is a 7th outfielder, which doesn’t bode well for the rest of his 2009 (and, for that matter, for his future with the Rangers).
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.

When has Boggs been discussed as a 4th OF for the remainder of this season?
I think that has been fully dependant on someone getting traded.
As for his future…..Byrd and Jones are gone after this season. So next season we will roll with an OF of Borbon, Hammy, Cruz, Murphy, Boggs.

No worries.
As for the future: Boggs as a 5th outfielder makes sense if nobody else challenges, but he’ll be 27 rolling into 2010, for what I believe will be his 6th season in the minors, without much of a track record of MLB success. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rangers find someone else to bring along…

Yah, that'd be nice, but at some point you have to look at the guy and either trust him a bit or DFA his ass.
Cause if last year’s dominance + this year’s first three months didn’t convince you to have some faith in the guy, then just cut him now, cause very few players (if any) are going to put up consistently dominant numbers throughout the whole season.
People slump, and Cruz has a rep as being streaky, so he’s gonna have his fair share of slumps.

There's a little hidden nugget of joy in that video
So the video starts off with the Silver Nissan going down the road and approaching the intersection, then it squeezes between stopped cars and goes into the intersection where it gets T-boned by a burgundy truck that the announcer guy thinks is black. So then the car comes to a stop and the cops come up to it and stuff… after a few minutes of that, they start trying to find the other truck, which is in plain sight blocking a couple of lanes of traffic but the announcer can’t find it. He has the camera guy zoom in on a black Dodge that’s also there and says that’s it… then says “maybe not. There should be a lot of damage. He knocked the shit out of that other car.” The video then goes completely silent, and they soon find the actual truck in the accident, a burgundy Chevy.

It got them in first place for about 58 days, immeasurably aided the pitching staff, set a precedent for other guys on the farm, and brought a ton of attention to the franchise, as well as putting a ton of butts in the seats.

Not a fair question
you have to ask this before the season.
Before the season, they determined that Elvis was ready. Now that it’s been proven that he has, I think it looks like a great decision for the reasons Rodney listed.
Yes, we are all aware that we now control him for one less year. But the concerns over his potential free agency would have been irrelevant if we hadn’t seen what we’ve seen.

I was asking this before the season
And especially since this season was viewed as a developmental year and not a competitive one at the start then utilizing a full year extra of control on a player should have been an easy decision. Elvis has showed he was ready and looks to be a guy who is gonna be a hell of a player for a long long time. We may very well resign him and he never sees free agency but that doesn’t mask the fact that we made a fundamentally stupid decision in not Longoriaing him to start this season.

My point
is that it is futile to have this discussion right now. Your sentiment is out of place in this thread.
If you were questioning Elvis’ presence before the season, that’s fine. But now that he is here, you cannot use his performance as evidence that you were right. The team clearly felt that it needed those 21 days of Elvis’ impact, which trumps the year of control when you consider the ripple (multiplier) effects.

I still don’t think you can argue having him for an extra year against an extra month this year.

Eh, like Chase said-time value of money.
This franchise was kinda in the shitter before Elvis was added to the roster. The team would not be winning w/o him in the roster. They could not afford another slow start if they expected to sell any tickets. AND, this was before we learned of Hicks’ money issues.
Also, how much better does this place look to any/all FA pitchers right now?

Ah, well, Vizquel is the kicker.
Plus you have the complications from “I thought we were moving off MY for the stud prospect, not the 40 y/o retread!”
I’m going to go against the conventional wisdom on this because I think the team was in dire need of Elvis. We needed him and all the repercussions that come along with a young, cornerstone player having success. If Elvis isn’t here, are they as patient with Davis?
This way, they can sell it as a developmental year, but also try to compete and make things interesting.

I think we have a lack of threat on this team
pre-2009. Kinsler’s fast, can get it done…Cruz has some speed. We added Andrus, and he’s got a pretty big impact there, but I think Borbon’s going to be a bit more difficult on the basepaths than any of the others mentioned. And I consider that game changing. Watching Gardner, Ellsbury, Pierre, etc. against us this year just KNOWING that if they got on base we’d be down another run is tough to watch, and you see the hairs on our pitcher’s necks raise up when they do get on. It will be very nice to have a top speed threat is all I’m saying, and to me, I think it’s a game changer.

Plus, he broke his ankle in college. Weak ankles + too old = not a prospect.

No I don't think so
Since we aren’t gonna need our 5th starter for awhile we could easily just option Hunter down.
But once Hammy gets back then there will be a roster move having to be made. I imagine hes just trying to make that move now rather than going through the ordeal of optioning a guy like Hunter

I agree.
Over at NMLR, 363dp is trying to convince me that the logic of starting Borbon at DH is that he might not have time to get comfortable with the RBiA outfield, risking injury.
I have to say, I’m unconvinced by that logic. If Borbon arrives so late that he can’t get in any pre-game practice, what’s the harm in starting him tomorrow and giving him a night to get his bearings and get some sleep? Certainly seems like a better option than putting him in at DH.
As for the 6th slot… meh. I have no idea.

letting him DH in his first game. But batting him sixth is the most moronic move RW has made yet. Since a RHP is on the mound vs Texas tonight, I assume Murphy is batting 2nd. It would make more sense to bat Bobon 2nd and Murphy 6th.

One thing the Pirates did
was draft some over slot guys later on, like they did last year. They are also in on some other international players. It wouldn’t be good for PR, but in a net scenario, they can spent a lot of that money in other places still. Besides, they still have to beat out the Twins and others even if their every intent is to sign Sano and he comes out clean.

Here's something I've been pondering...
It’s based off of something Bill Simmons talked about in his marathon mailbag with Malcolm Gladwell. Simmons asked why NBA teams didn’t use their last 4 or 5 spots on the bench to make a lineup that would do nothing but press. It would be made up of super-athletic scrubs who would just come in to surprise/wear out the opponents for 10-15 minutes a game as a change of pace. The underlying idea being that it’s easy to find the super athletic guys and if you had a system that could take advantage of their talents (speed, etc) and hide their weaknesses (shooting percentages, half court defense), you could have a huge edge for relatively cheap.
So my question is, why couldn’t you do this with a baseball lineup? For a while now, there have seem to been two schools of thought between the patient slow sluggers and the slap-happy fast guys (this is a big generalization, but just go with it a second). The problem is there are pitching styles/matchups/approaches that can be perfectly suited to attacking a lineup that favors one style too much. So why couldn’t you have a lineup that was half patient, see lots of pitches, draw walks type and then the bottom half have tons of speed and specialize in bunts, steals, double steals, etc. It seems like so much of lineup management effort is spent on getting the right mix in the first 4-5 spots and then you just throw whatever else you have out there.
For instance, what if you had something like Kins-Young-Hamilton-Cruz-Davis-Salty-Elvis-Borbon-Boggs. Ideally you could get one more speed guy in there.
I guess my basic question is this: in order to maximize the benefits of a ‘patient’ lineup vs an ‘aggressive’ lineup, does (almost) everyone have to be in that style, or could you have two totally different styles and get close to the max benefit of both?

It was marathon e-mail dialogue...
…and had some interesting points. For someone with such little access to sports growing up, Gladwell knows a ton about them.
It did get bogged down more than a couple times, but what else would you expect from Simmons…
by GhettoBear04 on Jun 29, 2009 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not a big fan of Gladwell or Simmons.
I’m going to go read the exchange now just to torture myself. And if Gladwell’s take on sports is similar to his work in The Tipping Point and Blink, I think we’ll have to disagree on his knowledge of sports.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.

Hmmm...
…I didn’t mean to make out Gladwell to be a sports genius, just someone who knows more than the average person with his background.
I haven’t read Tipping Point but just read Blink. Although I felt there were some weaknesses with his arguments, especially in how he laid it out, I found it thought-provoking at the very least and perhaps something more than that. What were your problems with Blink?
by GhettoBear04 on Jun 29, 2009 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Same problem I have with most of Gladwell's stuff.
He oversimplifies other people’s work, and then bills the oversimplification as his own original and incisive analysis, when in fact it is really none of the three.
Here’s a longer take on Blink by Sue Halpern, with which I basically agree.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
by Snark on Jun 29, 2009 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks...
..I’ll give it a read. I agree that he oversimplifies what’s more complicated research, then tries to draw big conclusions from them. It was also my problem with some of what Steven Levitt did in Freakonomics. But it at least presented some sociology-type data that I was unfamiliar with. And though I disagree with some of their conclusions and especially some of their methods to get to those conclusions, for pop economics, it could be worse.
by GhettoBear04 on Jun 29, 2009 5:16 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
"Freakonomics" bothers me for different reasons.
Levitt was, pre-Freakonomics, a very legit economist. His work on abortion and crime was quite poor, though, and it’s sad that Emily Oster has followed in his footsteps with her “missing women” analyses. My main problem with Levitt & Co. lies more their overreaches than any straight-up oversimplification…

His sports fan background is in a previous dialogue between the two:
“Why am I a sports fan? I’m not sure. I grew up in small-town rural southern Ontario. Neither of my parents or my brothers are sports fans, and we never had a television growing up. (In fact, my parents still don’t have one, which means that when I go home I’m reduced to trying to catch the AM broadcasts of NFL games from the other side of Lake Erie). I don’t think I saw a televised professional sports contest until I was a senior in high school. Everything I know came from Sports Illustrated, which I read at the town library.”-Malcolm Gladwell

I don't think that demonstrates a lack of knowledge about sports
My parents weren’t big baseball fans, I didn’t have cable growing up so my information came from the local news and their 7 minutes of sports coverage, weekly TWiB and the George Michael Sports Machine on Sunday nighs. The way I kept up was boxscores and I learned by reading books about baseball. Once I was 16 I could drive and go to friends houses to watch Sportscenter.

The problem with the slap happy fast guys
is they really don’t generate a lot of runs, and AL baseball is a game where you need to average around 5 runs a night to be competitive.
Most small ball type teams are successful because they have tremendous pitching and don’t need to score a lot of runs, like the White Sox World Series team.
I think people grossly overrate the ability to score runs by “bunts, steals, double steals, etc.”

Fair enough...
…but even Billy Beane has said that there are times, specifically in the playoffs, when you don’t necessarily follow the guidelines you’ve developed to win over a whole season? Part of that, I assumed, was that in the playoffs you can face the type of pitcher/pitching that excels against patient hitters (pitchers who can attack a strike zone/throw strikes that fool hitters with good eyes/etc).
I guess another way to phrase it would be, are there pitchers out there who struggle significantly more against a slap happy fast guy lineup than a patient, slugging lineup? Are there enough of these type of pitchers to justify altering your lineup to develop a lineup that had to separate approaches?
I guess the easiest answer to this is adjust your lineup accordingly if you could identify someway to quantify the types of lineups that pitchers struggled against (looking past lefty/righty splits), but even that would require getting enough playing time for your ‘second lineup’.

My question then is where do you bat Bourbon if eveyone is pissed that he hits 6th...
The team won’t throw him into the #1 or #2 hole being a rookie playing in his first game. No need to with the adrenaline flying. 3,4 and 5 are the supposed power producing spots, so that isn’t going to happen..
So that leaves 6, 7,8, and 9. Andrus will go 9th to wrap around to the top of the order, the C 8th, then either Borbon or Davis… So is everyone upset that he is not batting 7th or 8th or 1st or 2nd?
Leading off is not going to happen right away. The team has fallen into a nice patient approach in easy guys into the lineup. Same with batting #2. It seems like the biggest complaint could be that he is batting before Davis….

#2 or #9
Actually #2 isnt a bad spot right off the bat, but i like Andrus in the 2 spot tbh so #9 would work… the #6 spot is a run producing spot. you typically will put a larger bat there in case 1,2,3 go down in order in the first… if #4 or 5 get on in the second you want your #6 to be able to bring him around before the bottom of your order… it protects the top 5 spots from the bottom 3… its pivotal

The spot in the lineup is a smaller qualm for me
DHing him is patently crazy. If they don’t feel he’s ready today, then bench him. But if this team thinks that a soft hitting rookie with 0 ML ABs is their best option at DH for a potentially pivotal game against the Angels, then Blalock and Jones need to go. Immediately.

So, Hamilton is the Scotch, and Cruz is the beer?
Nice OF.

If he's half the defender that Andrus is, how about JB King.

The Rangers "instilled" Borbon right in the starting lineup?
C’mon, Evan, you write for a living.

And, Rangers "have given Chris Davis an occasional off day..."
CD has many off days that have resulted in an occasional day off.

Not panicking sounds like code for the Rangers are still building for 2010.
They’re moving the “championship-caliber” players into the lineup when they feel those players have shown enough on the farm.
I still think there is a trade brewing. Either that, or one of the DHs may be get released if this warning shot doesn’t spark them.
What’s worse for a power hitting DH…. Sliding through release waivers or being replaced by a speedster who slugged .387 in the minors.

I think I know why he's batting 6th...
Wash used ink when filling out his lineup card today, started writing Blalock’s name in the 6 hole as the DH, then after writing the B, remembered Borbon was coming in. Since it’s Wash, he didn’t think fo the easy conclusion of getting a new lineup card, and since he used a pen rather than a pencil, he thought he had to continue with the B and put Borbon at #6.

I don't care that he's batting 6th and is DH'ing
It really not a big deal as long as it doesn’t become a habit. It’s his first game. Let him worry about hitting on day one instead of trying to do everything as soon as he gets off the plane.
As for 6th? As pointed about above, if 1-5 and 9 aren’t realistic options for his debut, then why not have him above Salty and Davis? It’s just a question of whether you’d rather have Borbon on base when they K, or on deck.

worrying about just his hitting
certainly paid big dividends.
