Like I was telling my fiance via text message as I was covering two little league games at the same time...
The most annoying thing about this team ever is how they’ll get a solo homer or two then go into operation shutdown for the final six innings.
So… time to declare the season over and bring up the kids yet?

Hamilton was one of the biggest hackers on this team when he went down
Hell, he was one of the biggest hackers in baseball. Yet we’re expecting him to come back and cure the ills of an offense whose root problems are swinging at everything and not taking any walks?
Even if Hamilton comes back with an inkling of patience, my guess is sooner or later he’s going to start trying to do it all himself because nobody else can hit anything, and he’ll be right back to hacking with the Byrd’s and Balock’s of this team.

Why is there “little doubt” that the guy whose swung at the 26th most pitches in all of baseball this year is going to come back and fix an offense whose very problem is being impatient?

Rudy can be the "best" somewhere else
I’ve never liked him as a hitting coach. I think he is the most overrated coach in baseball. His aggressive approach is what screws this team. I watched this team for years, as have many of you, and last year was the first year I remember that we didn’t hack at pitches. Why is that? How many years has Rudy been here? “knee jerking” comments.
How long has this shitty offense been doin’ their thing? 45-50 days? That’s more than just a slump. A slump is one or two guys for 2 or 3 weeks. Not the entire team for almost 2 months. I’m one of the biggest supporters of patience here, but this is ridiculous.

Murphy
Saying David Murphy shouldn’t be hitting 3 or 4 right now is stupid. Since his 0-24 to start this year his overall numbers are .295/.361/.459 (prior to tonights game)
Factor in the fact he is hitting .156/.222./.281 against LHP and only 4 ABs were during that 0-24 stretch his numbers above are actually better than that.
Last year Josh Hamilton hit .313/.384/..566 against RHP.
Let me make this clear, I am in not saying David Murphy is anywhere near the ballplayer Josh Hamilton is. But based on those numbers it is not the horrendous idea to bat Murphy 3 or 4 in this lineup as it currently is.

Give it a rest
Im not sitting here randomly taking out bad games or anything. Murphy started the season on a 0-22 (not 0-24 my bad) streak. Hes had almost 150 ABs since then so this isn’t exactly a tiny sample size I am talking about. His numbers on the year against RHP are .279/.367/.426. Thats not that bad to begin with. And if you can understand the fact that includes 18 ABs at the start of the season when he couldn’t hit anything his numbers do look better. In fact they raise to this: .322/.389/.492. Thats an almost 900 OPS against RHP. With this lineup missing Josh Hamilton and everyone struggling there should be no complaining over Murphy hitting 3rd or 4th right now
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Bottom 5th
Kinsler singled to left.
Young walked, Kinsler to second.
Murphy popped out to second baseman Izturis. on the first pitch after the MY BB
Byrd grounded into a double play, third baseman Figgins to second baseman Izturis to first baseman Morales, Young out. on the second pitch
Angels then score 4 in top of 6th. Ballgame.

How many pitches per plate appearance are
the Rangers as a team averaging, and how does it compare with the rest of the league? I don’t know and I don’t think it matters. I think this stat is extremely overrated— and its constant citing here lately as if it has some grand, illuminating importance — is silly.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
by t ball on Jun 29, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It most certainly does matter.
It means your hitters are difficult to get out. It probably also means that you’re getting into the opponent’s bullpens. And it probably also means that you’re going to see better pitches to hit over time.
Given the choice, would you rather a Rangers player single on the first pitch or after working a full count? Would you rather see a three pitch strike out or one where the pitcher got to 0-2, the hitter took a pitch for a ball or two, fouled a couple off, and then whiffed?
It may not be a big deal in a single game, but over time it’s going to matter. Over the years we’ve seen the Rangers leave Boston and New York having overused their bullpen. Happens to most teams who play those teams. I’d like to see them leave Texas in similar condition, especially if they’re the Angels.

Whatever
I understand the value in making pitchers work hard, etc. etc. etc. You don’t have to explain all that to me. But it’s not a stat that should be used to criticize a single at bat in my opinion, and that’s how it always seems to be used here, and with no supporting stats saying that this or that hitter doesn’t see enough pitches.
The Rangers are seeing plenty of pitches, they’re just swinging at too many that are outside the strike zone and making poor contact. Chris Davis sees plenty of pitches. The problem with the Murphy at bat cited above was how the bat hit the ball, not that the pitch was swung on, or that it was the first pitch in the at bat.

I think this is the crux of the issue...
They are doing a poor job of deciding if a pitch is a good one to hit. They seem (to me, at least) to go up there looking dead red on pitch one, and if the pitch LOOKS like a fastball they swing. The number of swings and misses on pitch one concerns me more than the balls put in play on the first pitch. If I’m pitching against them, I’m throwing a slider or change on the first pitch 75% of the time – they seem to always read it as a fastball and swing through it.

I have to “babysit” my sports editor tomorrow night since he doesn’t seem to know the definition of deadline. So I’ll be keeping up with Feldman via MLB Audio.
And Wednesday night, I’m going to watch Josh Hamilton embarrass AAA pitching in Des Moines. I’ll tell him you all said “hi.”

Well, out here almost every district has had to pink-slip a bunch of teachers
California is totally and completely fucked in every single way financially. Doomsday, literally. So school districts are required to have their budgets in place by July 1, by law, but no one knows how much state funding will be taken away from the districts, and that won’t be known until well after July 1, so districts have to guess.

IOUs will start going out in a week or two.
The governator’s budget was really, really optimistic with its revenue projections, even after cranking up car fees, sales tax, etc. Plus, the voters here have passed a wonderful assortment of propositions over the years that add fixed, unremovable costs. Most recent was $10 billion in bonds this past November passed to start the wheels turning for a high-speed rail system between SoCal and the Bay Area that’s expected to cost many tens of billions by the time it’s done, if it even gets built at all. (Side rant: why the fuck do they need a high-speed rail system for that? I can see one for commuting from Rancho Cucamonga to Anaheim but no one commutes from the LA area to San Jose.) So $10 billion in bonds, when the state’s credit is in the toilet, in the middle of a giant credit crunch… the interest the state is now obligated to pay is obscene. It’s just the latest money drain the voters have passed over the years that make the state ungovernable. You can expect to see Obama print a bunch more money to bail out the state by this time next year, mark my words.

That's pretty much how it is here in IA too
Schools have to set their budgets by April 1, yet they won’t know how much funding they get until well into the summer. The district I’m working in now has managed to trim their budget without too many layoffs. They might be in bigger trouble next year though.

No nobody can except Washington
He wasn’t called up to be the DH. He just happened to DH tonight. Who knows why. With everything that went on today maybe they just wanted to ease him into the game as much as possible. Who knows. But Borbon DHing was not anywhere close to being the reason we lost this game.

i don't think that is the reason we lost
so is this now the approach when we call up hitters, much like the bullpen approach for our pitchers.
“let’s not worry about defense, just go out there and hit” that’s a terrible way to ease in a young position player. There is more pressure on these young players to hit, especially to get that first hit. Your defense is something you have more control over.

The guy woke up this morning in OKC probably not even thinking about the possibility of getting called up. Within a 12 hour span he went from figuring out what he was going to have for breakfast in Oklahoma City to being at the plate in a ML game. From getting the phone call to packing to making your flight to all the phone calls from family, friends, your former colleges sports department, getting to the stadium, etc, etc, etc having the guy DH so he only has to focus on one aspect of his game makes some sense. Its not his permanent spot. But for tonight it was his spot. The amount of flipping out over it was crazy

3rd is just fine a lineup spot
Last year Josh Hamilton drove in a ton of runs in that 3rd spot because of Kins and Micheal in front of him. If you aren’t gonna move Kinsler off leadoff for a prototypical leadoff man like Borbon then I doubt you are gonna do it for David Murphy. And Young is entrenched in the 2 hole and is having a solid season.

Actually, the guy in the #2 slot bats with more men on base than the #3 spot.
I’ve mentioned this so many times now, I’m starting to sound like a boken record, but third is actually more of an ideal spot for a guy like MY, who’s been solid but can’t hit with men on base.
Also, Borbon shouldn’t be leading off till he shows he can put up a .350 OBP or better in the majors. Just because you’re fast doesn’t mean you should lead off (see: Arias, Joaquin).

But right now they aren’t so the whole “2 guy gets more runners on base” theory is kinda off. And look at Murphys numbers with RISP. Not so hot.

I have no idea if the outcome would have been any different.
I do know last night’s outcome was not only terrible but fairly predictable.
You have a showdown with the best team in your division and not only throw a rookie (more attuned to leading off or hitting up in the order who doesn’t DH) into the line-up but you hit him 6th.
So if he was good enough to start the game, why wasn’t he good enough to hit in the 8th inning?

You really don’t understand why he was pinch hit for at that moment? Down 3 runs with 2 runners on and 2 outs. Borbon is not a power threat and a HR there ties the game.
Had davis, Teagarden, and Elvis combined for say 4 hits last night then I would be on here questioning the decision. But, like the rest of the season, they looked like crap last night. Whoever was batting 6th was going to get out with the bases loaded in that situation.

Well...
There’s a bit of an issue with that. See, most people thought the pitching may be kinda shitty but a little better and the offense would blow the roof off every night. To watch the pitching hold its own most of the time and the line up drowning in its own shit day after day gets to people. If they would just do what they’re capable of doing at the plate they’d be winning lots of games.
I didn’t think they’d be any good. I think my prediction was for 75 or 78 wins or something. But I had it backwards in terms of how they’d suck.

Smoak is not on the 40, and there are too many players that need to be protected this off-season from the rule 5. I think Smoak should get a full year in the minors— half in AA and half in AAA.

How are you digging the fact the you have pretty much been outed as a hack that has no real concept of using any form of numeric analysis and are the laughing stock of an entire website?
There is a reason why you have become a laughing stock. Even your shtick has gotten old. You used to at least be entertaining and sometimes insightful, but now you have become to wrapped up in your own shtick and have lost whatever insight you used to have. Your one sided bias has clouded what ever insight you once had and your willingness to exclude, omit, miss quote, or flat out ignore parts of arguments that poke holes in your shtick destroys what little creditability you once had.
To bad for you even your great Bill James can’t help you now. Your done. Time for you to go run and hide like normal.

Putting this in perspective
I think this season is going to be a good lesson of teaching these young players how to win over a long season. it’s a marathon, and if we can stay within reach of the Angles, I would love to see how this team reacts to those pressures. there is something to be said for learning how to win. the angels have that swagger and confidence about them. I want to see that for the Rangers in the future.

Did anyone notice how the Angel got their last run?
2 runners on-sac and move them ove. Next hitter-sac fly scores a run. If it’s down, both score, and the rally continues.. Either way, eliminate the DP.
There is so much right with that scenario-"chemistry"was brought up earlier. That’s where it comes from, from a teammate giving himself up to help his team win!

my question:
where are the 526 people that really thought TEX was going to win the division less than two weeks ago?

good point
it will take far less time for the minority to speak up than for the non-defeatist pussies to answer roll call.
and that’s another point…
i voice my concerns ahead of the curve and rodney calls me a “defeatist pussy.”
today (less than two weeks later) someone says “We suck ass” and gets the post recommended three times.
the myopic circle jerking here was hilarious in retrospect.

Just a thought....
But if I’m in a circle jerk, I sure HOPE I’m myopic. I really don’t want to see what everyone else is doing.

I hate to say I told you so… but I told you so.

You know, I just looked it up for grins
Since the day that poll was taken, we’re 3-8. Before the poll, we where still 7-7 on the month and rocking it at 10 games over .500.
Now, that probably means nothing… but if I actually believed in jinxes, I’d say that poll just ruined our season.

Im here
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

fair enough...
and i was at the Ballpark last night. i have not seen a more disappointing effort from a team that had every chance to step up and prove that they were contenders. their inability to rattle a rookie pitcher that was definitely on the ropes was pathetic, and i was embarrassed for them.
this is not a team that belonged on the same field with LAAA last night, and the QUIT/FAIL written on their faces was vomital.
do you still think this team wins the west?

Weren't there epic conversations in here last week (two weeks ago?) about how
many games were necessary to win the AL West?
I remember saying that somebody was going to win 90 games or more and taking a ton of shit from the LSB Lewinskys.
I feel pretty good about that one still and although my 73-89 looks shaky, it (unfortunately) isn’t dead.

The attitude seems to be apparent
and indicates the manager losing the hearts and minds of the team again. The misplayed situations managerially, the crazy lineups, the inability to use players correctly, and many other facets of Washington’s tenure push me to believe it’s time to let the manager go. Before you get your pitchfork, no it isn’t his fault as he does not play the game. However, to use a gardening analogy, he does not create fertile soil. The growth of this team comes from the hardy stock not from the craft of the gardener. The Rangers need a brilliant tactician (I got no idea who), and a strong leader (no not Buck-type, maybe more a LaRussa type) ideally. A solution must be present obviously before letting Washington go. So I ask, do you agree? If so, who should be on the list? If not, why?

The bottom of this Ranger order
Davis, either C, and Andrus, reminds me of the old Astros orders that ended with Ausmus, Everett, and the pitcher.
If the top 6 is cold, there isn’t much of a shot to win anything but a 1-0 shutout. Unfortunately, we don’t have the pitching the Astros had in their best years.
