not bad for a converted
sidearm reliever that never pitched big innings in the minors. The guy get’s aimlessly tossed to and fro from the rotation to the pen, back to the rotation and still delivers. Tell me what else the guy could do.

yeah, its karmic backlash to the nth degree

i dont know what to say
Elvis was amazing, CJ was unhittable, like i’ve never seen a guy throw with that kind of stuff… its a great night

was freakin Matt Thornton out there

he really was better than what i saw from Matt Thorton, dont get me wrong he throws hard
but CJ’s change, slider and movement on his FB in that sequence was flat out unhittable. Unlike i’ve ever seen him

bigsteve
props to you for driving the Feldman bandwagon
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
I thought he'd be good
But not this good
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I've been aboard for awhile as well
I was definitely a big defender in the off-season
But you should probably be driving if you go back to last May.
all winter
bigsteve had Feldman ahead of Hurley and maybe even Harrison for the rotation. We went a few rounds of Hurley vs Feldman and though we may never know who was ultimately right (due to Hurley’s injury) , it was a good call by bigsteve
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
But I think I was the only one who had Feldman in the rotation over BMac if we had signed Ben Sheets.
I thought Feldman and Harrison should have been in the roto no matter what.
Thats cause alot had BMac out of the rotation to begin with
Due to his fragile nature
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Feldman
Like with McCarthy I didn’t think Feldman had the higher upside but was a better bet to give you quality consistent innings. I felt like he was almost a lock to give you 180 innings and a 4.50 ERA which from your #5 starter is wonderful. I never could have predicted this level of success for Scooter.

Did I ever tell you about the time Elvis Andrus took me out to go get a drink with him? We go off looking for a bar and we can’t find one. Finally Elvis takes me to a vacant lot and says, ‘Here we are.’ We sat there for a year and a half—until sure enough, someone constructs a bar around us. Well, the day they opened we ordered a shot, drank it, and then burned the place to the ground. Elvis yelled over the roar of the flames, ’Always leave things the way you found ’em!

I was playing little league baseball, and Elvis Andrus was coaching the team? Anyways, I was, like 10 or 11, and this little 6 year old kid came up to my team and said, “this is my house, bitches.” Then, he taught us the skills to play the game and we ended up going to the little league world series and Elvis Andrus was named Coach of the Year. Me, on the other hand? Yeah, I just went to middle school.

So...
Yesterday, I’m talking to opposing counsel on a contentious case. He’d told my partner at the courthouse the other day that we’d settle, even though we’ve busted out in mediation and are set for a jury trial in July.
He tells me, “Your lady just needs to be realistic about what the number is. We’ll agree to take what we have, your lady takes what she has, and then there’s a number as to what she’ll pay him.”
I say, “I was told the number from your side at mediation was ‘X’ (a really big number). There’s no way in hell we’re doing that. Give me a real number.”
He says, “I don’t remember our number in mediation, but what was your number there?” I said our number is zero.
He says, “Well, 0 isn’t a real number either. I’ll give you a number, but you have to give me a real number first, and 0 isn’t a real number.”
I said, “Well, how about pi? Pi is a real number, isn’t it? We’ll give you 3 dollars and 14 point 15 cents.”
I thought he’d be amused by that, but he completely flipped out and yelled at me.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia struck out three more times Wednesday, extending his streak to 13 consecutive games. In those games, he’s struck out 26 times in 46 at-bats
He also had a 9 game hit streak going up until tonight
So it’s not like he was only striking out.

"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
I tend to get that way when a guy's OBP is butt-horrible.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OBP
is no different than BA, HR, or the like. It’s all subject to chance. Freaking out about OBP for a young batter makes as little since as freaking out about everything else.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
I'm freaking out because a good OBP that was what I expected of him this year
He’s taken a giant step backward in his pitch selectivity and batting eye, and it really concerns me.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the P/PA is still the same
the difference is he’s chasing some breaking pitches. It happens, it’s not like he’s just doing Davis contact.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
He's gone from swinging at 28 and 26% of pitches outside the strike zone his first two years
To nearly 35% this year. And both his O-contact rate has dropped off to boot.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His O-Contact drop is pretty small
He’s increased his contact on balls in the strike zone which partially makes up for it. He’s getting fooled on the breaking pitch. A lot of young hitters are. Maybe he’ll never figure it out, but its still too early to tell and be that worried about it. At least, any more worried about it now than at the end of last season.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
I know
surprisingly, a lot of other people know how to use Fangraphs too, Baseball Jesus.
His contact % isn’t so low that I’m worried. He’s always had that problem with low breaking stuff, it’s up to him to make that adjustment. His ISOP has gone up quite a bit, and his contact % hasn’t exactly dropped of the face of the Earth.
Being able to use Batting Ball stats doesn’t mean you analyzed them correctly, dude.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
I'm just telling you what I'm getting out of it.
I don’t see anything really encouraging about his numbers this year outside the ISO. His BABIP is still the same as it was last year, yet his LD’s and FBs have dropped slightly, and he’s hitting more grounders.
He’s swinging at more pitches outside the zone, and he’s stopped walking altogether. Everything I can glean from fangrapghs says he’s backpedaling.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Try harder
Look at his Z-Swing and his O-Zone Swing.
They’re both up, and really, they’re up by a similar %. This is an active attempt to be more aggressive at the plate. This leads to a tendency to swing at some bad pitches when he gets fooled. The growth will come when he knows which balls to swing at, and which ones to let go.
He makes hard contact when he gets into one, he’s hitting for more power, you just have to be patient for it all to come together.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
And really
a 6% increase in Swing % vs. a 2% drop in contact % is pretty good. He just needs to learn which ones to let go.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Well last year he was way too selective
And since his calling card was supposedly being an offensive catcher I have no problem with him being more aggressive this year. His patience can come back pretty easily. Now he needs to find the happy medium between too selective and too aggressive and he will be an offensive force
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
You keep saying that
And it makes less freaking sense every time, because his contact rate has actually dropped this year.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Because hes swinging at more pitches
Last year he would watch soooooo many pitches called strikes. To me it seemed he was doing it simply to get deeper into counts. Im glad hes swinging at more pitches. His power numbers have gone up which is good. Now he needs to start incorporating a little of that plate discipline and swing at less pitches out of the zone but still swing at pitches in the zone.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
You're freaking out way too much
about a 2% drop in contact rate.
Look, this year, Salty’s O-Z and Z-Swing are both up. BigSteve is right, this is an active attempt to swing at more pitches.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Actually
Looking at the “by pitch” #‘s on Statcorner The % of pitches he’s taking for a strike and % of pitches he’s taking for a ball is virtually the same this year as last year. And the # of pitches he took for strikes dropped from 2007 to 2008.
So no, bigsteve isn’t right, there was no problem with him “taking too many strikes”. He’s swinging at more pitches this year, true. And he’s making slightly better contact with the ones in the zone, great. But he’s being killed by his inability to distingiush pitches out of the zone.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sigh
You can be quite dumb at times.
His TK% is down. You know why his TKb% and TkS% are the same? Because he’s putting more balls in play, and stat corner doesn’t account for those.
And no, a .350-esque SLG% is not acceptable for a player playing in Texas. OBP is a great stat, and very useful for a team, but it’s still subject to SSS and if you don’t have a high SLG, you can’t maintain a high OBP either. It’s great to know Salty has the ability to take pitches, but it can’t be the only part of his game.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Um
Then why is his InP% is actually down slightly this year (and his Fi% slighlty up)?
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Foul balls
aren’t counted for TKB or TKs % either.
He’s taking less pitches, I don’t know what you’re retarding over.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
He's taking less pitches
And he’s putting (slightly) less balls in play. I don’t see how this constitutes anything good.
wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Increased ISOP
and despite a much higher Swing%, a significantly smaller decrease in contact%. It’s good because he shows he has that power, and power+ last year’s patience = awesome.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Yeah
But can he get last year’s patience back? There’s a difference between being patient and being selective, and right now Salty looks like Brad Wilkerson.

I’m not saying axe him tomorrow, just that I’m worried he’s not improving (and in fact might be backpedaling in some areas).

Also
I think myself the increase in power this year has come largely because he’s figured out how to hit from the right side again, which seemed to be his power side in the minors.

there’s a difference between stating “Hey, salty has a higher SLG% against lefties this year, maybe he’s becoming himself in the minors” and saying “Hey, Salty’s ISOP increase can solely be attributed to his ability to hit lefties.”

Man, that was huge. Especially after last night.
Fwiw, I sat in the visiting team’s owner’s box and the word there is the Padilla move (and this may have been discussed and figured out here already I realize) is being done in expectation that no one picks him up so then the Rangers front office can then tell him he’s obviously not in much demand so he better get his act together fast. And if he’s picked up? Fine with them as it frees up money for a pick-up later in the year.

Please advise Tom Hicks
that Josey Wales is laughing like a hyena that he has to cough up the team just when there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
Maybe, maybe not...
They have a little more time to wait for the offer they want than has been reported.
But Josey Wales applauds him for making some great moves to put the team in the place it currently is (after his initial attempts to build a winning team by spending a ton of money failed), right?
RBS loan payment date is public records FWIW
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
By that I meant that there are ways to draw things out...
…that aren’t always discussed in the news reports.
I wasn’t sure how pressing the current situation was, but tonight I got the feeling it’s not a next week, next month, nor even this year thing, short of their receiving the offer they want.
so your saying he has the 512M bucks to pay the Kop Holdings Loan without selling the rangers?
my understanding is that the 512M+ is due before aug 1st 2009, and his actions and recent comments show that he’s considering things he never was willing to think about even 6 months ago. The one team he cant default on a loan is the one that has very strict procedure regarding such things.
perryman stated that the media call about the draft with JD indicated that hicks wasnt willing to commit smoak money to any1 who fell this year.
none of that jibes with what your saying
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
I don't know all the financial details...
…but I can tell you they aren’t worried about the LFC loans or their ownership status there. They’ll be LFC owners for a long time, imho. (And I’ve loved occasionally pointing this out on some LFC sites for over a year now… especially when I was called insane as the British tabloids all had Hicks/Gillett as good as gone to DIC for most of early ’08. Ahhh, great fun.
)
And I’m guessing that Hicks has plenty of other assets he could sell if he ever needed to in order to satisfy RBC’s reported recent cash infusion refinancing demands.
As far as Ranger player payments go, I think any conservatism there is just generally in line with the lower payroll they’ve been running for several years now. They just aren’t interested in running the team at a loss after the huge losses they had for the first half of the decade. (What owner would be though, especially in this economic environment.) There isn’t going to be a firesale or anything though, and if Daniels really wants a player for which he’d need to pay up, I think he’d get it.
Fwiw, friendships not withstanding, a few years ago I would have agreed that Hicks handing off ownership would have been best for the Rangers. Bad luck, cluelessness, lack of interest… whatever it may have been chalked up to at the time, the results were simply that of a failed bit. But since then, Hicks and his team redoubled their focus, went back to the drawing board, made a couple well-placed gambles, and have put us in a spot that this franchise has very rarely been in its history. (Let’s not forget that several other Rangers owners, all of them well-accomplished men in other areas of business and life, have given it their best shot but failed to make this club a winner as well.)
I applaud Tom Hicks
for hiring Nolan Ryan. It was the best thing he ever did as owner.
But overall, fuck him.
He’s been a horrific owner and until he leaves, he’s still one of the biggest challenges this thing has.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
Right.
Because David McDavid or some other dude that knows zero about owning a baseball team would just be ideal. Nah, nothing bad that could possibly come from swapping out an owner that has shown he’s learned a lot on the job and has made some great moves lately (hiring Jon Daniels was a huge gamble that people like you would have endlessly criticized him for had it failed, fwiw)… for a new group that knows zilch about the game and with which we would have to start all over, once again suffering through another owner’s learning curve.
Cutting off your nose to spite your face, fwiw.
as long as the owner who is buys the club
knows that he doesnt know anything instead of thinking he knows everything when he really didnt, i dont have a problem with that. The thing i will never forgive hicks for is hicks taking a decade to realize that he should put a guy in charge with a long term vision towards winning and sticking to that plan instead of allowing multiple schiesters to lie to him and manipulate him for 10 seasons and therefore leaving a potential corvette of a franchise stuck in chevy vega.
im touched he figured it out, but im still and always will be pissed it took 10 years to figure it out.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
Questions...
allowing multiple schiesters to lie to him and manipulate him for 10 seasons
To whom/when are you referring? Give me some specifics.
im touched he figured it out, but im still and always will be pissed it took 10 years to figure it out.
Fair enough, but how long did it take previous Rangers ownership teams to figure out how to consistently win?
Fwiw, my family has had season tickets on the 2nd row behind the visitor’s dugout going back nearly 30 years. I was a Rangers fan and attending games regularly long before the Hickses were. So yeah, I hate that this decade was a wash, but at the same time… I know from long experience that the Rangers have always sucked. And, even the 96/98/99 teams really never felt like a franchise on the verge of being true favorites to win the AL or World Series. They were good teams in a weak 4-team division… similar to this team of course… but the difference now is this team is very young, not overpaid, and well stocked on the farm. Managed correctly the Rangers for the first time ever could truly enter a season in the next few years as the favorite to win the AL. I believe Hicks/Ryan/Daniels have the plan to get us there and the knowledge, finally, to see it through.
Whoa
Them’s strong words.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
All I'm saying...
…is that the Rangers have just been bad for a long time. It sucks, but that’s just how it has been.
Short, Corbett, Chiles… all gave it numerous years as owners with nothing to show for it. Bush/Rose/Schieffer came along and after nearly a decade finally broke through… for a total of one playoff win. :-(
Hicks took over and continued the tradition.
So why should I expect Joe Newowner would be any different? Internet fan board bashing aside, these previous owners were not stupid men. Quite the contrary… they were very accomplished in their careers and tried their best to win with the Rangers. But for whatever the reasons, that’s just a lot easier said than done.
Now if there just wasn’t any reason to think Hicks and his team would ever produce a winner, sure, change would be good as at least it provided the possibility (however unlikely) of success. And that is probably where we were a few years ago. But now? Well, now we definitely have reason to think that this team has figured things out and is doing some very good things that could soon bring the Rangers to new highs. So now when considering a change one has to recognize that the new owners might quickly undo all that. You just don’t know. It’s a complete unknown.
I think you might be overthinking things
If a new owner came in, he’d see the success. That could be a small reason for the purchase. Look at the attendance lately. A new owner might actually might want to invest in a winner. To me, at this exact point in time, a new owner could be the best thing.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
we'll see
if we dont go after a smoak or porcello level guy who slides into our laps, or we dont use our previous strategy of going over slot to nab guys who have slid in the draft, we’ll know exactly how dire our situation as a club is.
If our draft budget shrinks and or is limited unlike previous recent years, at the exact moment when spending a little extra to add 1 or 2 top prospects to make the run for a decade of dominance, we’ll know. If we dont sign any LAFA guys over a certain price, we’ll know.
By the end of the week, we’ll have an idea with the Draft. In 30 days exactly, the LAFA signings go down, we’’ll have a pretty good idea. By the end of July, RBS calls in its loans for Kop Holdings refinance. By then, we will definately know.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

EGS
Buck
Orel
Boras
im touched he figured it out, but im still and always will be pissed it took 10 years to figure it out.
to expand further,
you give hicks great credit for hiring JD, which i agree was a good decision, but lets be honest, who he hired was not the key element in this, he coulda hired a multitude of very skilled individuals who were available, whether it was Drayton Moore who is now in KC, or Scheurholz who was heading out the door, or cashman whi has been in and out the door, or JD, etc. The key element was fully accpepting the bottom up strategy to winning. To be allowed to be sold the concept that less money going into the Cat-a-la-nada’s, Rusty Greer’s, Ho’s and putting most of that money into foreign acadamies, LAFA markets, funding of a top of the league scouting program, paying above slot all the way through the draft rather than the Drew Meyer b/c Kazmir may cost an extra million. That willingness to restructure the way he went about spending on the infrastructure for winning is the reason we are here today.
Now would we have Elvis and JD and traded Tex without JD? no probably doesnt work out that way, But would we have quit spending 80M a year on 14 men on a 25 man roster, and instead re-approrpriated to a bottom up building of a franchise? I think that much was on Tom, and any GM that came forward out of that process rather than JD would have likely gone about the same methods of rebuilding the franchise that JD, whether the key spokes in the wheel are the same or not i dont see as important as the change in approach.

Mind if I interject...
I am not huge Hicks fan by any means but i do agree that he has shown improvements, especially in the youth development and the like
that said, it would be flat out ignorant to not be concerned about his current financial woes and the subsequent fallout that could come within the team from these issues
as jayslick states, these financial issues could even prohibit the team from spending money in the draft, hello Houston Astros….
If Hicks cannot afford to run the team at an appropriate level, everyone, including you should ask him to step down for the sake of the franchise
OK.
If Hicks cannot afford to run the team at an appropriate level, everyone, including you should ask him to step down for the sake of the franchise
I’m not worried about this being the case presently.
Like I said here, I think they plan to continue their conservative approach to payroll growth, but they aren’t ideologically opposed to paying up where they deem necessary.
we have been one of the least conservative clubs in all of MLB
in all aspects of franchise expenditures other than the payroll of our 25 man roster, scouting, acadamy building, LAFA’s, Draft Budgets, Coaching Budget (with Maddox). Thats why we are good now, and young now and cheap now. And its why people are going now, and its why people think we can be good for a decade now, And thats why people are scared shitless now.
Like i said, we’ll know by the end of the week to certain extent, and we’ll know after july 2nd for sure.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
This
is exactly why I’m concerned by the thought of Hicks selling a majority stake.
Hicks has said before that he learned from those early years when he did too much and wanted to shake things up, as if he knew more about baseball than the baseball operations people. If so many financially intelligent people have owned teams throughout the years, but only a handful have been successful at it, then I’m more than willing to live with the devil I know rather than the devil I don’t.
I don’t think much would stop a majority owner from coming in and saying, “Well, this franchise has sucked royally forever. I have loads of fresh new ideas, and since you all have to do what I say, we’re going to do things my way.”
Hicks has offered big contracts to free agents, he’s signed off on blockbuster trades that have brought the franchise the core of young talent we currently have, and he’s ponied up quite a lot of money to sign draftees and Latin American players.
Do I wish he’d figured this out earlier? Hell yes. But I’m not willing to bank on another owner coming in and having already figured this out.
Every once in a while you have a John Henry take over
But the odds are probably against it.

Uhm no...cause I have more faith in Feldman than any Rangers pitcher in years.
You can look at his face and see he’s in control.
By the way…who looked at Feldman and decided he should be a starter? They need a raise…

I think the important thing to take from this game
Is that a Posada HR to the shortest part of the park is a sign that Feldman just can’t cut it after 85 or 90 pitches or whatever number of pitches it is.

Feldman as a starter
After tonight
8 G/ 5-0/ 48.0 IP/ 34 H/ 14 R/ 14 ER/ 16BB/ 25 K/ 2 HR/ 2.63 ERA
Wow
You would think if he keeps this up he would have to get some consideration for the All -Star game wouldn’t he?

About a coin flip between the two, wouldn’t you say?
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 3, 2009 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions
But if the Ks, walks, and HRs are the same...
…then wouldn’t the hits allowed and runs allowed just be indicative of how well the defense was behind him and what sort of luck was involved?
3.86 ERA over that period, fwiw.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 3, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions
because a guy could have the line you posted and give up 1,000 hits in that time period
… and it wouldn’t just be bad luck
Generally speaking...
…a pitcher has little control over whether balls in play go for hits or not. If a pitcher’s BABIP is remarkably low, in particular, it is indicative of great defense and good luck, rather than a particular skill on the part of the pitcher.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 3, 2009 10:59 PM CDT up reply actions
If you are evaluating...
…how well a pitcher has pitched, the peripherals are generally going to be more indicative of his level of performance that hits allowed and runs allowed.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 3, 2009 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions
There is a function of luck there
But you can’t ignore the type of contact he gives up. Pitchers do hold some control over that. The trick is how much stock to put into that and the resulting hits allowed. Put too little, and you become obsessed with FIP as the true evaluation of how good a pitcher is. Put too much, and you end up like the mainstream baseball analysts. Right now, you’ve put absolutely no stock in that.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Type of contact
He’s allowing a line drive rate of around 16%. That’s likely not sustainable, and even if it is, his BABIP is still .241, which is lower than would be expected even given that.
He’s pitching well. But he’s not going to be able to continue posting a sub-3 ERA with his peripherals.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 3, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions
no, but if you dont take into account that Feldman induced 11 GBs
and 2 FB outs (both of which according to DMN, didnt leave the inf), you are gonna be missing something about how good Feldman is pitching. If you look at the numbers bt. Inf FB % on the year, those numbers are way up and his GB% is solid as well. BABIP is gonna be almost zilch on pop ups to inf, it doesnt matter who you are.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
His infield fly ball rate this year
If you look at the numbers bt. Inf FB % on the year, those numbers are way up
Nope — 7% this year, 7% last year, according to FanGraphs.
It was actually higher in 2007 and 2006.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 3, 2009 11:40 PM CDT up reply actions
yea, you know what, i thought i had seen like 16% when i last looked at i
stupid me… but his LD% is down, GB/FB is above avg… I thought i had seen a really high IFFB %, but that is not the case
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
I do think he's capable of keeping around a sub 4.00 ERA
even if his BABIP comes back a little… Add to that, I think he can improve a little as a starter as he continues to use his curveball more and more as a strike out pitch.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
...
His LD rate might go up from this point forward and his BABIP will likely go up as a result. I don’t think Feldman is going to be a Cy Young winner either, so no I don’t think that he’ll keep a sub 3 ERA all season. Another thing to consider with that is that this Rangers defense isn’t going to play much worse for him. With this great defense, Feldman has the luxury of being forced to pitch for a strikeout, but just get any type of groundball. Especially when he lets a baserunner on, he can get a groundball and know that there is a good chance the IF will provide him with 2 outs. I do believe that part of the reason Feldman’s K rate is this low is simply that he is pitching according to the team he is on like other pitchers might adjust to a bigger ballpark.
The thing with Feldman also is that he isn’t a finished product yet either. The K rate will go up as he develops more as a pitcher and if he keeps that walk rate and HR rate around the same, he’s going to be a guy with a pretty good FIP who will more often than not be able to surpass that in his ERA.
That cutter is quickly becoming a deadly pitch. Like I posted in the Gameday thread, Fangraphs has his cutter this season as being better than some of the most notable names who use the cutter. His curveball has been a dangerous weapon as well. If he can start commanding his fastball better, he is looking a hell of a lot better than the back of the rotation guy that you have made him out to be. If he doesn’t, then he’s still going to be better than a back of the rotation guy. Also, even if he is only able to go 90 pitches in a game before he struggles, he’s been able to at least make it to the 6th and 7th innings before that applies. Though I’m still not sold on him being able to go past that point.
P.S. Its funny how you go from looking like a Feldman defender to a Feldman basher so quickly. I know you don’t have anything personal against him and you just have a different opinion on him than I do, but I remember when you had to defend Feldman because everyone despised him after that poor 2007 season.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Defending against the extremes
Feldman is not a #2 pitcher, and he doesn’t need to be DFA’d. When we have people here posting one or the other of these extremes over the last few months here, how could he not end up looking like both defender and basher?
