not bad for a converted

sidearm reliever that never pitched big innings in the minors. The guy get’s aimlessly tossed to and fro from the rotation to the pen, back to the rotation and still delivers. Tell me what else the guy could do.

Like with McCarthy I didn’t think Feldman had the higher upside but was a better bet to give you quality consistent innings. I felt like he was almost a lock to give you 180 innings and a 4.50 ERA which from your #5 starter is wonderful. I never could have predicted this level of success for Scooter.

I remember one time Elvis Andrus took his family to Sea World

Anyway, they were watching Shamu the whale when Elvis got splashed!

So Elvis yells, “I’m Elvis Andrus and no one gets me wet!” So he climbs into the tank, grabs Shamu and throws the whale into the audience, splashes him and yells, “How do you like it?!” And then damn if Elvis Andrus didn’t step in there and finish the show!

I was playing little league baseball, and Elvis Andrus was coaching the team? Anyways, I was, like 10 or 11, and this little 6 year old kid came up to my team and said, “this is my house, bitches.” Then, he taught us the skills to play the game and we ended up going to the little league world series and Elvis Andrus was named Coach of the Year. Me, on the other hand? Yeah, I just went to middle school.

Slow chopper by Cano

C.J. couldn’t get it, looked like a sure infield single, and Andrus came in, bare-handed it on the hop, and seemingly in one motion threw a bullet to Davis to beat Cano by a half-step.

Hello Win Column

His O-Contact drop is pretty small

He’s increased his contact on balls in the strike zone which partially makes up for it. He’s getting fooled on the breaking pitch. A lot of young hitters are. Maybe he’ll never figure it out, but its still too early to tell and be that worried about it. At least, any more worried about it now than at the end of last season.

I know

surprisingly, a lot of other people know how to use Fangraphs too, Baseball Jesus.

His contact % isn’t so low that I’m worried. He’s always had that problem with low breaking stuff, it’s up to him to make that adjustment. His ISOP has gone up quite a bit, and his contact % hasn’t exactly dropped of the face of the Earth.

Being able to use Batting Ball stats doesn’t mean you analyzed them correctly, dude.

I'm just telling you what I'm getting out of it.

I don’t see anything really encouraging about his numbers this year outside the ISO. His BABIP is still the same as it was last year, yet his LD’s and FBs have dropped slightly, and he’s hitting more grounders.

He’s swinging at more pitches outside the zone, and he’s stopped walking altogether. Everything I can glean from fangrapghs says he’s backpedaling.

Try harder

Look at his Z-Swing and his O-Zone Swing.

They’re both up, and really, they’re up by a similar %. This is an active attempt to be more aggressive at the plate. This leads to a tendency to swing at some bad pitches when he gets fooled. The growth will come when he knows which balls to swing at, and which ones to let go.

He makes hard contact when he gets into one, he’s hitting for more power, you just have to be patient for it all to come together.

Because hes swinging at more pitches

Last year he would watch soooooo many pitches called strikes. To me it seemed he was doing it simply to get deeper into counts. Im glad hes swinging at more pitches. His power numbers have gone up which is good. Now he needs to start incorporating a little of that plate discipline and swing at less pitches out of the zone but still swing at pitches in the zone.

You're freaking out way too much

about a 2% drop in contact rate.

Look, this year, Salty’s O-Z and Z-Swing are both up. BigSteve is right, this is an active attempt to swing at more pitches.

"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon

Actually

Looking at the “by pitch” #‘s on Statcorner The % of pitches he’s taking for a strike and % of pitches he’s taking for a ball is virtually the same this year as last year. And the # of pitches he took for strikes dropped from 2007 to 2008.

So no, bigsteve isn’t right, there was no problem with him “taking too many strikes”. He’s swinging at more pitches this year, true. And he’s making slightly better contact with the ones in the zone, great. But he’s being killed by his inability to distingiush pitches out of the zone.

Sigh

You can be quite dumb at times.

His TK% is down. You know why his TKb% and TkS% are the same? Because he’s putting more balls in play, and stat corner doesn’t account for those.

And no, a .350-esque SLG% is not acceptable for a player playing in Texas. OBP is a great stat, and very useful for a team, but it’s still subject to SSS and if you don’t have a high SLG, you can’t maintain a high OBP either. It’s great to know Salty has the ability to take pitches, but it can’t be the only part of his game.

Fwiw, I sat in the visiting team’s owner’s box and the word there is the Padilla move (and this may have been discussed and figured out here already I realize) is being done in expectation that no one picks him up so then the Rangers front office can then tell him he’s obviously not in much demand so he better get his act together fast. And if he’s picked up? Fine with them as it frees up money for a pick-up later in the year.

so your saying he has the 512M bucks to pay the Kop Holdings Loan without selling the rangers?

my understanding is that the 512M+ is due before aug 1st 2009, and his actions and recent comments show that he’s considering things he never was willing to think about even 6 months ago. The one team he cant default on a loan is the one that has very strict procedure regarding such things.

perryman stated that the media call about the draft with JD indicated that hicks wasnt willing to commit smoak money to any1 who fell this year.

none of that jibes with what your saying

by Jayslick on Jun 4, 2009 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't know all the financial details...

…but I can tell you they aren’t worried about the LFC loans or their ownership status there. They’ll be LFC owners for a long time, imho. (And I’ve loved occasionally pointing this out on some LFC sites for over a year now… especially when I was called insane as the British tabloids all had Hicks/Gillett as good as gone to DIC for most of early ’08. Ahhh, great fun. )

And I’m guessing that Hicks has plenty of other assets he could sell if he ever needed to in order to satisfy RBC’s reported recent cash infusion refinancing demands.

As far as Ranger player payments go, I think any conservatism there is just generally in line with the lower payroll they’ve been running for several years now. They just aren’t interested in running the team at a loss after the huge losses they had for the first half of the decade. (What owner would be though, especially in this economic environment.) There isn’t going to be a firesale or anything though, and if Daniels really wants a player for which he’d need to pay up, I think he’d get it.

Fwiw, friendships not withstanding, a few years ago I would have agreed that Hicks handing off ownership would have been best for the Rangers. Bad luck, cluelessness, lack of interest… whatever it may have been chalked up to at the time, the results were simply that of a failed bit. But since then, Hicks and his team redoubled their focus, went back to the drawing board, made a couple well-placed gambles, and have put us in a spot that this franchise has very rarely been in its history. (Let’s not forget that several other Rangers owners, all of them well-accomplished men in other areas of business and life, have given it their best shot but failed to make this club a winner as well.)

But overall, fuck him.

Right.

Because David McDavid or some other dude that knows zero about owning a baseball team would just be ideal. Nah, nothing bad that could possibly come from swapping out an owner that has shown he’s learned a lot on the job and has made some great moves lately (hiring Jon Daniels was a huge gamble that people like you would have endlessly criticized him for had it failed, fwiw)… for a new group that knows zilch about the game and with which we would have to start all over, once again suffering through another owner’s learning curve.

Cutting off your nose to spite your face, fwiw.

as long as the owner who is buys the club

knows that he doesnt know anything instead of thinking he knows everything when he really didnt, i dont have a problem with that. The thing i will never forgive hicks for is hicks taking a decade to realize that he should put a guy in charge with a long term vision towards winning and sticking to that plan instead of allowing multiple schiesters to lie to him and manipulate him for 10 seasons and therefore leaving a potential corvette of a franchise stuck in chevy vega.

im touched he figured it out, but im still and always will be pissed it took 10 years to figure it out.

Fair enough, but how long did it take previous Rangers ownership teams to figure out how to consistently win?

Fwiw, my family has had season tickets on the 2nd row behind the visitor’s dugout going back nearly 30 years. I was a Rangers fan and attending games regularly long before the Hickses were. So yeah, I hate that this decade was a wash, but at the same time… I know from long experience that the Rangers have always sucked. And, even the 96/98/99 teams really never felt like a franchise on the verge of being true favorites to win the AL or World Series. They were good teams in a weak 4-team division… similar to this team of course… but the difference now is this team is very young, not overpaid, and well stocked on the farm. Managed correctly the Rangers for the first time ever could truly enter a season in the next few years as the favorite to win the AL. I believe Hicks/Ryan/Daniels have the plan to get us there and the knowledge, finally, to see it through.

by WyoRanger on Jun 4, 2009 1:17 AM CDT up reply actions

All I'm saying...

…is that the Rangers have just been bad for a long time. It sucks, but that’s just how it has been.

Short, Corbett, Chiles… all gave it numerous years as owners with nothing to show for it. Bush/Rose/Schieffer came along and after nearly a decade finally broke through… for a total of one playoff win. :-(

Hicks took over and continued the tradition.

So why should I expect Joe Newowner would be any different? Internet fan board bashing aside, these previous owners were not stupid men. Quite the contrary… they were very accomplished in their careers and tried their best to win with the Rangers. But for whatever the reasons, that’s just a lot easier said than done.

Now if there just wasn’t any reason to think Hicks and his team would ever produce a winner, sure, change would be good as at least it provided the possibility (however unlikely) of success. And that is probably where we were a few years ago. But now? Well, now we definitely have reason to think that this team has figured things out and is doing some very good things that could soon bring the Rangers to new highs. So now when considering a change one has to recognize that the new owners might quickly undo all that. You just don’t know. It’s a complete unknown.

by Texas_Dawg on Jun 4, 2009 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I think you might be overthinking things

If a new owner came in, he’d see the success. That could be a small reason for the purchase. Look at the attendance lately. A new owner might actually might want to invest in a winner. To me, at this exact point in time, a new owner could be the best thing.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

we'll see

if we dont go after a smoak or porcello level guy who slides into our laps, or we dont use our previous strategy of going over slot to nab guys who have slid in the draft, we’ll know exactly how dire our situation as a club is.

If our draft budget shrinks and or is limited unlike previous recent years, at the exact moment when spending a little extra to add 1 or 2 top prospects to make the run for a decade of dominance, we’ll know. If we dont sign any LAFA guys over a certain price, we’ll know.

By the end of the week, we’ll have an idea with the Draft. In 30 days exactly, the LAFA signings go down, we’’ll have a pretty good idea. By the end of July, RBS calls in its loans for Kop Holdings refinance. By then, we will definately know.

im touched he figured it out, but im still and always will be pissed it took 10 years to figure it out.

to expand further,

you give hicks great credit for hiring JD, which i agree was a good decision, but lets be honest, who he hired was not the key element in this, he coulda hired a multitude of very skilled individuals who were available, whether it was Drayton Moore who is now in KC, or Scheurholz who was heading out the door, or cashman whi has been in and out the door, or JD, etc. The key element was fully accpepting the bottom up strategy to winning. To be allowed to be sold the concept that less money going into the Cat-a-la-nada’s, Rusty Greer’s, Ho’s and putting most of that money into foreign acadamies, LAFA markets, funding of a top of the league scouting program, paying above slot all the way through the draft rather than the Drew Meyer b/c Kazmir may cost an extra million. That willingness to restructure the way he went about spending on the infrastructure for winning is the reason we are here today.

Now would we have Elvis and JD and traded Tex without JD? no probably doesnt work out that way, But would we have quit spending 80M a year on 14 men on a 25 man roster, and instead re-approrpriated to a bottom up building of a franchise? I think that much was on Tom, and any GM that came forward out of that process rather than JD would have likely gone about the same methods of rebuilding the franchise that JD, whether the key spokes in the wheel are the same or not i dont see as important as the change in approach.

I am not huge Hicks fan by any means but i do agree that he has shown improvements, especially in the youth development and the like

that said, it would be flat out ignorant to not be concerned about his current financial woes and the subsequent fallout that could come within the team from these issues

as jayslick states, these financial issues could even prohibit the team from spending money in the draft, hello Houston Astros….

by Jayslick on Jun 4, 2009 2:08 AM CDT up reply actions

This

is exactly why I’m concerned by the thought of Hicks selling a majority stake.

Hicks has said before that he learned from those early years when he did too much and wanted to shake things up, as if he knew more about baseball than the baseball operations people. If so many financially intelligent people have owned teams throughout the years, but only a handful have been successful at it, then I’m more than willing to live with the devil I know rather than the devil I don’t.

I don’t think much would stop a majority owner from coming in and saying, “Well, this franchise has sucked royally forever. I have loads of fresh new ideas, and since you all have to do what I say, we’re going to do things my way.”

Hicks has offered big contracts to free agents, he’s signed off on blockbuster trades that have brought the franchise the core of young talent we currently have, and he’s ponied up quite a lot of money to sign draftees and Latin American players.

Do I wish he’d figured this out earlier? Hell yes. But I’m not willing to bank on another owner coming in and having already figured this out.

There is a function of luck there

But you can’t ignore the type of contact he gives up. Pitchers do hold some control over that. The trick is how much stock to put into that and the resulting hits allowed. He’s allowing a line drive rate of around 16%. That’s likely not sustainable, and even if it is, his BABIP is still .241, which is lower than would be expected even given that.

I do think he's capable of keeping around a sub 4.00 ERA

even if his BABIP comes back a little… Add to that, I think he can improve a little as a starter as he continues to use his curveball more and more as a strike out pitch.

...

His LD rate might go up from this point forward and his BABIP will likely go up as a result. I don’t think Feldman is going to be a Cy Young winner either, so no I don’t think that he’ll keep a sub 3 ERA all season. Another thing to consider with that is that this Rangers defense isn’t going to play much worse for him. With this great defense, Feldman has the luxury of being forced to pitch for a strikeout, but just get any type of groundball. Especially when he lets a baserunner on, he can get a groundball and know that there is a good chance the IF will provide him with 2 outs. I do believe that part of the reason Feldman’s K rate is this low is simply that he is pitching according to the team he is on like other pitchers might adjust to a bigger ballpark.

The thing with Feldman also is that he isn’t a finished product yet either. The K rate will go up as he develops more as a pitcher and if he keeps that walk rate and HR rate around the same, he’s going to be a guy with a pretty good FIP who will more often than not be able to surpass that in his ERA.

That cutter is quickly becoming a deadly pitch. Like I posted in the Gameday thread, Fangraphs has his cutter this season as being better than some of the most notable names who use the cutter. His curveball has been a dangerous weapon as well. If he can start commanding his fastball better, he is looking a hell of a lot better than the back of the rotation guy that you have made him out to be. If he doesn’t, then he’s still going to be better than a back of the rotation guy. Also, even if he is only able to go 90 pitches in a game before he struggles, he’s been able to at least make it to the 6th and 7th innings before that applies. Though I’m still not sold on him being able to go past that point.

P.S. Its funny how you go from looking like a Feldman defender to a Feldman basher so quickly. I know you don’t have anything personal against him and you just have a different opinion on him than I do, but I remember when you had to defend Feldman because everyone despised him after that poor 2007 season.

Defending against the extremes

Feldman is not a #2 pitcher, and he doesn’t need to be DFA’d. When we have people here posting one or the other of these extremes over the last few months here, how could he not end up looking like both defender and basher?

I was at the Frisco game during the eighth inning, and this was probably talked about then, but I think that Grieve accidentally coined a good nickname to add to Andrus’ list.

But UT has this one

UT has the best pitching in the NCAA, and they are just a team that knows how to win at this level

honestly, it probably mostly comes down to whether or not UTs offense decides to go to the game

He is fearless.

A 20 year old playing in Yankee Stadium with Robinson Cano flying down the line in a huge situation in an 8th inning… and he barehands the ball, drills Cano, and silences a crowd ready to go nuts with a hot-streaking Posada coming up with men on.

Awesome.
