Rearranging deck chairs on the Titantic
or why JBImaknee is getting off the 2009 bandwagon and learned to love the trade deadline.
The posts in the morning update are somewhat bothersome to me. Not because the complaints about where Borbon bats or why Byrd is playing are without merit, but because they are minor and just examples of getting outraged because people are just mad and looking for something to scream about. Where Borbon hits is really irrelevant. Bat him 4th or 9th for all I care. Bickering about where a guy hits in a lineup in his first week is silly. Davis vs Blalock (Josey and Adam's favorite argument) is a waste of time - both are awful players right now. Why Byrd is playing? Why does Wash hate Boggs? Why we should believe Chris Davis has finally turned a corner. Blah, blah, blah.
Anyway, here is my point. Once you get to a point where arguing where Borbon should hit or which 4th outfielder should play more, or which horrific 1b option should get the honor of striking out 3 times against lefties, you're basically admitting that there is nothing really to do.
This team is sinking right now. Fast. I've never looked at the schedule before and hoped that the All Star Break was closer than it is, but I am now. This team is in a funk that is about to send them into 3rd place and very likely at or below .500 by the All Star Break. Furthermore, the Angels are not as bad as everyone constantly says they are, and Seattle isn't going to wilt away like we all would have hoped. The AL West isn't strong this year, but it isn't the NL West from recent years where a mediocre .500ish club like the Rangers would compete. Is Josh Hamilton alone going to recharge an offense that is fundamentally flawed? I don't think so.
So I think that Borbon is the first "Play for 2010" move that we're going to see. The fact that the team is playing badly gives JD & co. a good rationale to bring up kids, just as they would in a pure rebuilding year. In a month or so, we'll see Feliz, and soon after probably Smoak (maybe even sooner).
I think that in a few weeks, the debates will be how much the Rangers can get for Kevin Millwood (who may well be the best starting pitcher on the market), whether they can get anything for Vizquel (or whether they should) or Byrd or even Murphy, or if any team will take Blalock or Padilla in August when they'd only have to pay a month or so salary. Whether this team should finally move on from AAAA types like Mathis and Mendoza, or whether we should give them one last shot to earn a spot in the Rangers bright future. But that future isn't now.
I'm depressed.

Millwood
Even if we are out of the race in July, I think you still keep Millwood. If you are playing for 2010, he’s a solid guy to start the rotation with.

But I wouldn’t mind having him around if he keeps this up.

l would defiantely listeon to offers
and go from there. If someone gives you an offer you can’t turn down, especially one that involves MLB ready SP and a young 3B prospect you take it and roll the dice with Padilla in 2010.
It seems like Sheets and Lackey will both be the headliners of the 2010 FA class, so if Millwood’s $$ can be used to go after either of those 2, why not.

Exactly
I think Millwood can get a very nice return, and if the team can only have one of Millwood or Sheets next season, give me Sheets + whatever guys Millwood can get back this year. Yeah, Sheets is kind of risky, but Millwood is too in his own way – there is no guarantee that Millwood will keep pitching the way he has recently next year.

Sheets
I view him more as a replacement for Padilla.
That said, I would certainly listen to offers for Millwood, but I would want to be blown away before dealing him, in contrast to the situation with Teixeria, Gagne and Lofton a couple years ago.

It just depends on the offer.
I’d be willing to move him if the price is a Major League ready starter and a couple of A ball prospects who won’t need to be put on the 40 for two years.

Stay the Course
Again… while we were all very pleasantly surprised by the great start, this is what gets GMs fired. JD has stated all along that he has had a 5 year plan. Having glimpses this year of the culmination of that plan while being somewhat competitve was the goal for the good majority of us prior to opening day. I fear that a good deal of us have become greedy by the results in April and May, forgetting that there are still 4 months left to play after that.
To help re-tool for years 6, 7, 8 and beyond of JD’s plan (if he is here for it,) gut the team where there are prospects that are expected to be ready next year and get their feet wet this year. See what you can get for Byrd, Jones, Blalock, Guardado and Padilla. Replace them with Borbon, Adam Fox, Max Ramirez, Neftali Feliz and then turn the last couple of months in to audition time for SP like Tommy Hunter, Dustin Nippert, Willie Moscoso and the like. Make a definitive decision on Brandon McCarthy, SP or RP… pick one and stay the course (preferrably the RP route as a 7th inning + guy.
Move Davis up in the lineup. Move Borbon to the top of the order. Move Kins down to 5. Go with Borbon, MY, Hamilton (DH/LF alternation), Davis, Kins, Cruz, MaxRam, Catcher, Andrus order. If this is what the plan is for next year’s lineup, start it out now, build consistency with the lineup. Adam Fox gets rewarded for his life in the minors and can serve as a solid breather type guy for ANYONE on the team with his versatility.
Your bench now looks like David Murphy, Adam Fox, Taylor Teagarden, Omar Vizquel and then your decent relievers now and most of the pitching staff is unchanged from where it is now. Start working the I-35 shuttle and see what you have for next year. Hopefully you have new ownership by the first of the year and have a better plan of what you can afford to go buy to plug holes.

Staying the course
I was willing to go after a Nick Johnson type a few weeks ago when the team was up by five or six games but showing some weakness in the lineup, if the price was right (I didn’t see Johnson being particularly expensive, but maybe he was/is). But now I’m pretty sure it’d take more than a Nick Johnson to ensure competitiveness, and I don’t want to start cashing in the big prospect trade chips for anything less than a sure shot.
It takes real guts for a GM to stay the course when the team has shown that it can be competitive if everything is going right. Fortunately, JD can cite Hicks’ financial problems for not chasing acquisitions.

Not really...
don’t think I called him a prospect… just need bench filler and it’s either him or Steve German and we know what he is at the major league level. In addition, Fox has shown that he can play outfield, and if I recall correctly, pitched mop up duty for Frisco a few times. More of a reward for being an organizational soldier.

OK
Thats what I gathered by this statement
gut the team where there are prospects that are expected to be ready next year and get their feet wet this year. See what you can get for Byrd, Jones, Blalock, Guardado and Padilla. Replace them with Borbon, Adam Fox
If thats the case I assume Fox would be replacing Jones. Why not just keep Jones? Unless there is a legit prospect that needs room there is no need to drop Jones who is making peanuts. He may suck but Adam Fox is not a major league player

If you had told me back in ST
that the Rangers would be 2.5 games out on June 30 I would have been ecstatic. So why give up hope now? Changes need to be made and hopefully Wash realizes that he is not as smart as he thinks he is before things go completely down the crapper.
Start with moving Kinsler to bat 3rd. Let Andrus and Borbon leadoff. Hamilton bats 4th and DHs. Byrd and Murphy share LF. Cruz bats 5th. Release AJ and keep Blalock simply because there is no better option as a backup 1B/LH PH.
What do these moves do? It puts Kinsler into a run producng slot in the lineup. Borbon was groomed as a leadoff hitter, so bat him 1st or 9th. Cruz is best suited to bat 5th and Byrd/Murphy 6th. It also keeps CD and Salty down at 7-8.

Millwood
I’m trying to decide whether an acquiring team would view his 180-inning option as positive.
I guess it would be payroll-specific, but I figure the acquiring team would be glad to have him around another year.

next year will be a contract year like this year was supposed to be, and if you’re a firm believer in that players play better in their contract years, then yes I’d have to say yes he can definately pitch this well again next year especially if he keeps conditioning himself over the off-season like he did this past winter….

I have not much doubt
that the players view the Borbon callup as the beginning of raising the white flag. I don’t think many of them will be surprised to see vet for prospect trades.

Most of the time players are quoted about callups, they don’t view them as someone who can help the team. They tend to view prospect for Vet things as things the front office does to help them.

Yeah lets see what the corresponding move is
Yesterday we just sent down our extra bullpen arm. When Hamilton returns then we will see what the corresponding move to Borbon is. If a veteran gets traded or released who was doing decent then it may be a white flag to some players. But I doubt alot of our young players would view it as that. Maybe some of the veterans but the youngsters probably haven’t been around enough to view it that way

If they get beaten up
by Tampa and LAA, they’ll have learned two things. First, they’ll be probably at least 4 or 5 games behind LAA by then. Second, they’ll have put up poor showings against pretty much every strong team in the league this year. At that point, it is hard to see any silver lining for playing for 2009.

Geez people
It’s June 30 and they’re 2.5 games out after the offense has gone into one of the biggest slumps in history. I personally don’t think this is a time for dispair.
This is basically the same offense as last year. Milt was the only substantial change and his absence did not cause this huge offensive letdown as of late. It’s more likely the bats bounce back than not. So sit back and wait for it.
Two things that need to happen are 3 players start hitting again (don’t care who) and the manager starts looking at splits. Then the pitchers keep allowing the D to make plays behind them and all might be well.
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

which apparently makes a world of difference. I loved the move to bring him in, but if you truly believe this is the same staff as last year (which it isnt, better conditioning, younger guys with more experience) then you have to say that maddux has made this a different staff, which he may have.

With Nolan Ryan apparently
reluctant to sell at the trade deadline last year because he still believed we were a contender (hamburger anyone?), do you really think he is going to sign off on a a fire sell if we are still within 7 games a/o 7/31? I don’t. What I envision is a lot of trade inactivity for us (due both to a desire to stay the course and a piss poor market) the possibility (whether 7 out or 1 out) that we might see Max or Smoak in August and other internal adjustments.

I would like to know
what kind of offers they had for their chronically injured troops just out of curiosity: Bradley, Millwood, Padilla. It is likely that no one wanted the two pitchers as they had both been on and off the DL a couple of times but Padilla came off before the deadline and pitched well in at least 1 maybe 2 games if I remember. Millwood was still on the DL I think. It could be that they felt a supp 1st was better than what was being offered for Bradley but I kinda doubt it.

considering that supplemental pick for Bradley

Good question
It is possible, but I guess we may never know. What is certain is that whoever we got probably would be helping us this year. Scheppers may not make the rotation until mid 2010 or a/o 2011 especially if he fails to pitch this year. By April 1 2010, He will have effectively missed 2 years of competitive baseball if you don’t count his 2 interleague games…

I doubt Bradley had much a trade market
NL teams probably felt he couldn’t play the field and the AL teams that would have needed him either didn’t need him or thought he was too much of a cancer in the clubhouse. I doubt we were offered sufficient enough package to trade him.

He wasnt a cancer in our club house
and it is likely that some AL team offered us a couple of nice prospects for him but the team wanted to sell higher than that and chose to keep. Given his first half with TX, that is a much more likely explanation IMO.

What's that drinkers definition of insanity?
Doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result?
Magically expecting better results from this offense of Davis, Blalock, Byrd, Jones, Salty, and Teagarden is just setting yourself up for disappointment.
Blalock is a hack. That’s not going to change and I can’t imagine it has any value so they should just waive him and pray someone is dumb enough to take the rest of his salary off their hands.
Jones is terrible but for the price and the fact that he hasn’t bitched about sitting on the bench I have no problem if he’s the last fielder on the roster.
Byrd has morphed into some god awful swing at everything player who has also regressed as a defender. Some team will take a chance on him because his numbers aren’t bad. Hopefully he’s moved soon. Heck at this point I hope they get something because I don’t want to watch him hit into yet another inning ending double play on the off chance that he’s a Type A or B this winter.
Davis needs to be sent down till Septemeber at the earliest. One week or two won’t cure his ills. In fact he made need to retool his whole swing. Just go ahead and accept that he’s got a massive amount of work to do and let him get on with it. I hope by next week the Rangers will just decide to go with Ramirez or Smoak.
Neither Salty nor Tea are swinging the bat well but since this is about 2010 keep running them out there.
Once you do that then play Borbon, Smoak, and Ramirez regularly. Listen to offers on Vizquel and Millwood. I’d also cut/60 Day DL Guardado for the Pirate and give Hunter/Moscoso a chance in the rotation. Holland may need to be sent back down to work on his off speed stuff and fastball location.
Regardless I get the feeling this LA, Tampa, LA gauntlet is going to bring reality that this is a team for next year back squarely into focus.
