Eric Nadel Out with Torn Retina - Per EG
Here is the story from Grant.

Rangers radio broadcaster Eric Nadel will be out of action for an indefinite period of time with a torn retina. He is currently in surgery in New York and will return to Texas after the surgery, but will have to be basically immobilized while the surgical area heals.
He is requesting people leave their well wishes in his comments, but I thought that this would be a good place as well. It is going to be weird not hearing him call the games.
Here is to hoping that he has a speedy recovery and is back in the booth shortly.

undoubtably caused by
the miraculous plays of Elvis Andrus.
Hope you are back soon.

Oh dear lord
Barnett without Nadel? Pardon me while I vomit.

Ouch
that’s one of two places I never, ever want an injury. Get well soon, Mr. Nadel. I won’t be listening to the radio broadcasts for a while, I guess.

I had a SCRATCHED retina that didn't require surgery...
…and that week of recovery was one of the most miserable of my life. I can just imagine how much worse this will be for Eric. I hope he gets some seriously good meds.

How do you scratch your retina?
I thought it was pretty well protected. I understand scratched corneas, and I’ve had them with contacts before, and they are painful.

Whoops! I believe you're correct, it was my cornea...
…it was almost 20 years ago so I guess I forgot all the details. Still hurt like a M’erF’er.

Yeah, no doubt
I remember spending the day in a dark room with codeine pills. Usually when I had scratched corneas it was because I passed out with contacts in, and had scratched corneas on top of a hangover. It sucked pretty hardcore.

Mine was an incident involving a set of electric hedgeclippers...
…and a piece of flying shrubbery. There was only one thing I could do that didn’t result in pain: lie perfectly still with both eyes closed.

Awful
I was fortunate enough to meet Eric in December and spent some time talking about his history as a broadcaster and the team itself. His passion is unquestioned and I have a tremendous respect for taking the time to share his experiences with students like myself. He will be missed.
I had a paper route when I was a kid. I was supposed to go to 2,000 houses. Or two dumpsters.
Bummer
I have to listen to the game on the radio this afternoon instead of watching. I MIGHT have to try the Yanks broadcast …Barnett is that bad

Nadel
to me is Rangers. Growing up in Abilene, we didn’t get many games on TV. Holtz and Nadel were the voice of my summers. I can still remember Nadel’s call of Nolan’s 5000th strikeout of Ricky Henderson. Classic call.
Hope Eric comes back soon. I don’t hate Dave Barnett like many of you do. I just wish he would reset and give the score more. I guess this means we are in for more Steve Busby, though, which isn’t a bad thing. Buzz is a little underrated in my opinion.

i remember busby and sunberg on tv...

Godspeed in your recovery. Someone help the dumb guy that knows nothing about torn retinas, but isn’t there trauma normally associated with a torn retina. How did this happen?
Evan Grant @ June 4th, 2009 at 11:24 am
@fo shizzle: No trauma. Just happened. It can happen to anybody.

Update from Eric Nadel
He’s already home in Dallas.
I don’t know how long I will be out. I am supposed to be very still and not move my head much for a week or two. Don’t know when the blood will drain from my right eye, either.
I will have to be patient, and very very grateful that we caught it in time and I was in NY where I could get recommended to a great surgeon.
I am not in any pain, just frustrated that I can’t see out of my right eye and can’t work.
That’s it for now. This too shall pass.
