6-4 "Double Dragon (Nicknames Needed!)" Minors Thread
It's a pretty slow night tonight for the Minors Thread, as the most exciting prospects are currently being delayed by rain in Hickory.
Whenever Hickory gets started, the duo of Martin Perez and Jacob Brigham will take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers (Marlins). The Hoppers have their share of young prospects as well, but they're not exactly performing well, especially 2008 top 10 pick Kyle Skipworth. Overall, the team is pretty weak. (Hickory is now Post-poned)
Also, Mike Bianucci and Matt West fancies themselves as pirates. (Thanks to NC's fantastic Crawdad blog)
In Bakersfield, the Blaze takes on a very good offensive San Jose team, despite the fact that San Jose lost Brandon Crawford to promotion and that Angel V. is once again a hot and cold bat. Tim Murphy starts for the Blaze, and it'd be really nice to see him at least make some progress, I might pitch chart the game to see if anything stands out.
Organizational solider Michael Ballard will take on Tulsa at 7 in Frisco. Without Smoak or any pitching prospects, Frisco is a rather boring team right now.
Finally, Luis Mendoza comes back from his strep throat as the Redhawks take on the Memphis Redbirds.
Discussion: Nicknames
With more attention being paid to the ML team, the quality of Nicknames for minor league players have surely suffered, as evidenced by my uttely lame attempt to find a fitting nickname for the Martin Perez/Jacob Brigham combo. Take some time to go over the current nicknames used for minor league players. What nicknames do you use for particular players? Explain the reasoning behind it. Who the hell is cankles, dirk-a-tron? Without a top of the line pitching prospect going, this is the perfect time to do some house keeping.

Prospect help
I am going to see the Peoria Chiefs vs. the Beloit Snappers tomorrow night. I know the Chiefs roster well, but does anyone know if Beloit, the A affiliate for the Twins, has anyone of signficance?

Thanks
There was some head-scratching that went on when the Twins drafted him, but it seems clear that he’s a legit ballplayer. Goldstein said the other day that every time the Twins make a surprising pick like that, he’s just reminded how much smarter they are than him.

Crops on the Farm
I know that is a site, but why do they get so much crap on the board? I think I missed the day when they pissed everyone off. I’ve never read it so I am just curious.
by pblack on Jun 4, 2009 9:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
They're a running joke
Because Finnerty came here and made a Fanpost advertising Crops and looking for feedback (and affirmation), and then got kind of ticked off when the critical minds around here all called BS because of the sites horrible content (eg, calling Feliz a “four-A” pitcher because of his control problems).
To their credit, Finnerty has made attempts to improve (like getting rid of Ron Spellman) but the place is still pretty comical.

The only thing worse than being talked about
is not being talked about
by Telegraph on Jun 4, 2009 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was pretty great
It wasn’t just overly critical LSB posters being jackasses (though, that was part of it), it was honest questioning of some prospect rankings and evaluations that were absolutely loony. Calling Feliz a Quad-A guy and pimping Jared Hyatt as the next big thing were the most memorable (at least until the recent Moscoso debacle), but their lists from top to bottom were chock full of hilarity.
Matters were only made worse when it was discovered that the now-departed Spellman had plagiarized a paragraph from Scott Lucas. Or did Scott Lucas plagiarize Spellman? Did we ever figure that out?

I'm just upset
that their Moscoso post is over a week old, and there hasn’t been an update since.

And Pedro Strop
Pitched a scoreless 9th for Frisco before sandwiching 2 walks around a strikeout to open the 10th. Jumbo Diaz on now to try and preserve the scoreless tie – he got 1 out on a FO, but just walked the bases loaded.

He needs Smoak to hurry and get to OKC.

I still don't see why the two have to be tied
You have LF, RF, DH and 1B for Tracy, Moreland, Smith and Smoak. They’re DHing guys like Renny Osuna and playing Andy Fox in left field even with Smoak out. Make Guilder Rodriguez and Fox part time fill-ins and problem solved.

Waiting til after the draft?
Slot some college kids in high A and then start shuffling.

I doubt if they
assign any position players from the draft that high. Most college players go to Spokane, and the really advanced guys will still start at Low A. Ackley is probably the only guy in this draft who at all warrants consideration for A+.
From the outside looking in, it does seem like Bianucci and Smith both deserve promotions, though, so they might be waiting until after the draft/2nd half to bump both together, like you said. I guess we’ll just have to see how their plan plays out on this.

3 hits, 0 R, 4 K’s, 0 BBs (!!), 8-5 GO/FO.
