Rangers Pitching Help
While the Rangers may make the playoffs, their rotation, as currently constituted, is undoubtedly not playoff-caliber. There has been a lot of talk about whom the Rangers might pursue this season to front their rotation. There are three proven TORPs discussed, but it seems unlikely any would be coming to Texas. Peavy has consistently stated his desire to remain in the NL; Drayton McClane has recently said he cannot see trading Oswalt and referenced their personal relationship, and the Jays are hanging around thus making a trade for Halladay less and less likely.
Outwith a proven TORP there are many pitchers who may be had that could be matches for the Rangers. Players like Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez, Chris Volstad et al have been mentioned but I would like to put forth my preference. If the Rangers are going to trade for an impact starter this season then I want them to target one guy; Josh Johnson of the Marlins.
I know Johnson's name had been mentioned in the above list, but I did not know much about him, so I did some research after watching him stifle the Brewers last night and what I discovered is an excellent young pitcher who would still be under control for 2 more seasons. Johnson is being paid 1.4$ this season. Here are some numbers. His ERA this season is 2.63 and he has struck out 72 while striking out 19 in 82 innings. For the more saber minded folks he has an ERA+ of 162 and a career ERA+ of 129. His FIP is 2.88 this season.
I know Johnson has had health problems in the past but I don't have a Baseball Prospectus subscription and can't say what Carroll has to say about him. He made only 14 starts last season while coming back from injury but this season has averaged almost 7 innings/start. He would undoubtedly require a significant package of prospects but, if the Rangers are going to make a deal this season, I would rather see them unload the farm for a young guy under control for 2 more seasons who then might be locked up through his prime. Johnson is from Tulsa and thus may be willing to remain in the Texas area through his career. So I am officially on the acquire Josh Johnson bandwagon now.

that's the guy
He’s a young ace.

Ricky Nolasco
Bad early results, got demoted, but his K and BB rates where still intact and his BABIP indicated he’d been extremely unlucky. He was batshit crazy good last year, and unlike Josh Johnson, he actually might be available for something less than our farm system’s left nut at this point.
That’s the guy I’d go after.

Nolasco
I am torn on which way to go. I know the Rangers are still a work in progress and if they were out of it this year I would be much more inclined to go with a guy like Nolasco. However, they have a shot right now so that makes me more attracted to a guy like Johnson. I hear what you are saying though about the prospect package required.

What does Florida need?
What kind of immediate impact players would they need? Im not worried about coming up with lower level pieces that are years away but the upper level stuff we may not match up on.

I think they still need a catcher
And have been in on MaxRam in the past. Too bad his trade value is kind of toast right now.

Ok
Would you do Holland, Max/Teagarden, Vallejo, Boscan, and Weiland?

in terms of value
I think that is about what it would take. Obviously if you’re gonna land a guy like Josh Johnson, it’s going to hurt.
If it were possible, I’d like to amend that offer and include Salty and Harrison instead of Holland and TT.

If it requires Holland or Feliz, I can wait.
I’d trade TT, Salty’, Smoak, Perez, Beavan, Main, Harrison, or McCarthy in a deal, though.

I can see a case where we could get by with Harrison and Salty
But I think it would mean an increase at the lower levels to make the deal work. I think Boscan would be a no doubter and maybe Font would have to be thrown in instead of a Pimental or Weiland.

Wow
That looks like a shit ton… I’d like to substitute Kiker for Holland and make it Teagarden, then possibly Vallejo, Boscan and Pimental. I’ve come to the thoughts that Boscan and Pimental are low floor, high ceiling type guys at this point. Vallejo just won’t have a spot with the big league team in the next 3-5 years. I’d like to hold on to Weiland, just seems that there is a natural potential there.

See I don't think FLA does a deal without a ML or near ML ready starting pitcher
that is highly touted. Basically either Holland or Feliz. And if they would take Kiker instead of either of those then I would have to take a long hard look at Kiker because FLA hasn’t missed on very many guys they’ve traded for.
The lower level guys are so many you could probably come up with a number of combinations that would work.

ML or near ML ready starter
The Rangers are not in a position to give up such pitcher to anyone. Maybe Mathis or Hunter but I don’t think they have much value at all. About all the RAngers can do to get a quality SP without mortaging their future is to trade an upper level bat plus lower level pitching.

Why the hell would the Rangers trade a ML ready SP
When that’s exactly what we need?
by jdh90 on Jun 5, 2009 12:36 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Josh Johnson is a young, already proven ML starter. Holland and Feliz haven’t proven anything yet. Im just saying what it would take to get a guy like Johnson in trade. Theres no way it happens with strictly position players.

i still have a huge problem
with bringing a guy over from the N.l. I know this isn’t fantasy baseball but jeez u look at the numbers and it’s not exactly an osmotic transition. al to nl means better numbers… ex cc. sabbathia, c young, etc. when was the last good n.l starter traded to a.l. and achieved expectations? j. johnson may be a stud but i’m very very hesitant to trade kiker + for a n.l. who is inconsistent and not a proven commodity. last time we did that we wound up with adam eaton. i say we hold form and keep the powder dry. hopefully sheets is healthy this season and agrees to play ball with w team on the cusp. i know it sucks but i would love to see the team hold off on trading main, beaven, kiker, feliz, holland, hunter etc…. and see if we can finally develop some pitching within. no reason to trade our high ceiling top draft picks/ trades for someone elses juan dominguez’s…..

So you don't want to give up prospects to bring someone over from the NL
But you want to sign a FA from the NL?

yes
b/c we can get sheets w/o giving up any of our farm…. seems like a pretty easy move to me if he’s healthy. you have two choices..
1) unload the farm for peavy (yeah right), volstad, johnson, oswalt or whoever.
2) hold w/ what u got maybe sign sheets for cashmoney and hope millwood, bmac, feldman, holland/sheets, harrison/feliz/hunter can keep the team in contention. i think the worst thing this team can do right now is unload it’s wad on an outsourced overpriced pitcher.
no one expected this team to even finish above .500 this year so let’s not forget we are rebuilding and make a hicks-like change of direction by selling the farm for long shot post season run

You realize Josh Johnson would help us now AND in the future though
I agree with you we don’t need to change course and start trying to go all in for this season but if you can help your club now while not hurting it for the future.
I don’t want to becomes the Angels who held on to their prospects too long and then when they didn’t pan out they were stuck with nothing. Because we aren’t gonna have the payroll they do to supplement those dud prospects with expensive FAs so if you can trade an unknown for a proven good starter who won’t destroy your long term plan I think you do it.

maybe because he wasnt that good last year?
or since he was at AA
if your having problems getting AAA players out, odds are not in your favor that your going to get major league hitters out consistantly

They are at least as aware as you that he’s good, why would they want to trade him?

Right, but they have choices
in who to trade and I hardly think he’ll be at the top of the list. This is just not realistic.
