5th Element

Such an underrated movie.

What's the rumpus?

by Hypo-Luxa on Jun 5, 2009 2:31 PM CDT reply actions

By whom?

It’s a pretty popular movie.

by brettgardner on Jun 5, 2009 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

I've come into contact

with many who either haven’t heard of it or thought it was a horrid movie. Maybe just personal experience but in my circle I’m in the minority of people who enjoyed the movie and will stop down to watch it if I encounter it while flipping channels

Most people I've talked to

absolutely hated the movie — I always kinda liked it.

Chris Tucker sucks.

He was awesome in Friday, everything else sucked. Having said that , I will watch this Sinatra movie he’s doing.

Guy knows how to film an action scene

Mila completely kicks ass in the 5th Element as did Jean Reno. Leon might be one of the coolest contract killers ever. Maybe up with Anton Chigurh although for completely different reasons. My girlfriend/ex/whatever-she-is is completely freaked out by Chigurh – won’t watch any portion of that movie after seeing it one time.

Actually, this is a good mental exercise. Best hitmen.

Great movie except for the character in the picture above

I found Chris Tucker annoying and taking away from an otherwise good movie.

My favorite character was the president, the same actor who played one of Little Nicky’s brothers I believe.

But still, one of Tucker’s best films, by far.

of all the topics for the Friday afternoon video, how in the world did you land on this particular one?

he would quote this movie all the time. As a matter of fact, he would quote lots of Chris Tucker lines all the time. “How ’bout some Colt… 45!”

Pretty bad movie

I can see where some liked it. I thought it sucked, though.

Recently I started going to Hulu. Watched a few episodes of “Silver Spoons” and “Kings”.

Anything good on there?

by Black Francis on Jun 5, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

This movie got an incredibly bad rap.

This is by far one of the best sci-fi movies in the last 10 years. Nothing was really that bad about this movie…people just get pissed off that Tiny and Milla Jovovich are in the flick. So fuck you all and suck it hard ‘cause regardless of your ignorant interpretations, this was a very solid and very good sci-fi movie (and I really wish they’d proceeded with the sequel “Mr. Shadow”).

by JBP on Jun 5, 2009 5:20 PM CDT reply actions

Well since...

…there are such strong opinions on it and it’s on cable all the time, I’ll watch it again.

by Black Francis on Jun 5, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

YES!

Gary Oldman is even awesome, despite his terrible southern accent.

by JBP on Jun 5, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Jesus man

It’s a good movie but not as good as you make it out to be. It looked really cool, action scenes were well done, no huge plot holes and Bruce Willis is always fairly cool. But it was silly at times, like the video above. Some of it was just too….. artsy. That was both a good point at times and a bad one at other times.

Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.

by WyoRanger on Jun 5, 2009 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly!

I’m not making it out to be amazing. But there was absolutely nothing terribly wrong with that movie, and it still gets a very bad rap. I’m just trying to sound the “it’s a pretty good movie, you should watch it” trumpet.

In the last 10 years? (or 12 since 5th Element was 1997)

1. Primer
2. The Matrix
3. Serenity (Firefly fuck yeah!)
4. Gattaca
5. Children of Men
6. Minority Report (also gets a bad rap, and I do still hate Tom Cruise)
7. Pitch Black
8. 13th Floor
9. Watchmen (that’s stretching the genre, otherwise it’d be #1)
10. Star Trek (I include this only because the movie kicked amazing ass and successfully revived the series)

by JBP on Jun 5, 2009 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow.

I haven’t seen Watchmen (I’ll assume it blows), but every single other movie on your list is total shit, in my opinion.

Star Trek wasn’t total shit, but it’s been vastly overrated for some reason.

by brettgardner on Jun 5, 2009 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought Minority Report was an excellent movie

More suspense in a sci-fi setting.

Also hate Tom Cruise. His ex-wife on the other hand….

by Black Francis on Jun 5, 2009 10:28 PM CDT up reply actions

You lost all credibility

When that list did not include “Dark City”

Or AI

Which is a much better film than 3/4 of that list.

I do like the inclusion of Serenity, however.

Eh

Movies I’d take over it in the last ten years include:

Children of Men (waaaay better)
V for Vendetta
Iron Man
Star Trek (better than I expected)

Here’s a good list.

by WyoRanger on Jun 5, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd argue V for Vendetta and Iron Man (even though both are fantastic).

V for Vendetta is only sci-fi insofar as the 1984 scenario plays out, otherwise the genre doesn’t apply at all. And Iron Man is much more a comic book movie, with the only science fiction aspects being the armor.

But otherwise, yes and yes, without a doubt.

I almost put that one up

But it is long and weird, and if you haven’t seen the movie, it makes even less sense, i think.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 5, 2009 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

That scene

is really one of my least favorite scenes in the movie. Just a little too strange, even in the context of a pretty strange movie.

By the way, if you’ve ever heard of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mike (the guy who took over for the show’s creator, Joel), has a website called RiffTrax, where he and some of the other folks from MST3k go to town on popular movies. Mike did this one by himself, and it’s pretty damned funny.

I should warn you, though — they use this strange audio voice called Disembaudio so that people can more easily synchronize the RiffTrax audio track with the movie’s audio track. Mike asks Disembaudio a few too many questions in this one. Otherwise, quite funny.
