The 6-5 "Hot, Latin Action" Minors Thread
It's a night made for the likes of Brett Perryman as some of the best high-upside Latin talents in the organization goes tonight.
Hickory will play the Greensboro Grasshoppers tonight and Wilmer Font is listed as the probable starter for tonight. The Greensboro lineup is not particularly impressive, so it'll be interesting to see how fastball reliant Wilmer becomes against this lineup of weak hitters.
At 7, the Frisco Roughriders take on the Tulsa Drillers behind Michael Kirkman. The Tulsa lineup is especially weak against lefties, so it'll be good to see Kirkman do well here. Of course, he's also facing the Rockie's best prospect Jhouyls Chacin - a GB machine with a good arsenal, so this weak Frisco lineup might not give him much help.
At 7:05, the OKC Redhawks attempt to take the series from the Memphis Redbirds. Four A pitcher Neftali Feliz will go for the Redhawks, so let's hope for a good game.
Finally, at 9, Kennil Gomez will go for the Blaze against the San Jose Giants. I would like to see Gomez do well against this very good Giants lineup.
Discussion: Can You Say no to the Kodiak Bear?
This comely fellow is Richard Poythress, his nickname is the Kodiak Bear. He's one of the best bats in this college class, but he's falling because he has the defensive flexibility of a crippled Max Ramirez. However, that bat seems real. Let's say it's draft day, and this fellow is available with the 2nd round pick. He's certainly the best prospect available at this point, but given the Rangers' large amount of talent at 1B, would you take him despite other needs? Likewise, if at some point the Rangers unload Hank Blalock on, say, the Chicago White Sox, and JD is offered someone like Jon Link, a relief pitcher, or the positionally challenged Tyler Flowers. Do you go for the better prospect or the greater position of need?

With Font on the mound
in lieu of Pimentel, I’m hoping we get to see NeRa to start the 4th.
Look forward to seeing lil’ Timmy’d frisco debut as well…

Hell yes to Poythress in the 2nd.
Even in the 1st Supp that’d be a decent pick IMO.

Best player available
If he’s that guy, take him and don’t twice about it. Just makes it easier to use a slugging 1B/DH type to swing a blockbuster deal.

Yah, I'd be really happy with Poythress in the supp round.
Advanced college bats are always good.
I really don’t think system depth should come into it too much, if at all.

If he was throwing lots of changeups and sliders, sounds like a mandated deal, so I guess a less-than dominant performance is to be expected.

Yes, thanks
Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but here’s a thought: could the heavy fastball reliance tonight be an instruction from above, as a prelude to him joining the pen as a power arm sooner rather than later?

He threw quite a bit
of CRVs after the first 2 innings.
Also, keep in mind that Neftali was tossing the ball and doing fielding stuff until 10 minutes before the game. Chances are, he used the first inning to get warm.

With him throwing that many FBs
i guess that really is an 80 pitch with those results. If he learns to just have command of two offspeed offerings, they dont even have to be that special, he is going to be dominant.

What'd you read?
Had a couple long plane flights so I motored through Consider The Lobster.
I love DFW the person, love his college commencement speech, dig a lot of the short fiction.
Here he’s the dork show off you knew in high school. Equal parts knowledgable (lot of free time) and self-absorbed (embarrassed to have all the free time) who favors airing his mental questions out because that at least earns a little more attention. It was like reading a student waving his arm in the first row.

DFW
Lot’s a peeps love that guy. Never read him.
I got into this sudden Foo Fighters kick for some reason and wound up curious how someone as sane as Dave Grohl got mixed up with Nirvana. So, I read Michael Azerrad’s Come as You Are. Hated it – demented 1993 left-wing screed built around a subject that he knew would interest the kids and sell.
Now I’m reading Everett True’s 2005 detail-o-rama Nirvana. Much much better – although he’s a limey his voice is very American from, I suppose, hanging out with Americans so much.
Turns out Dave Grohl was like the 5th drummer Nirvana went thru and was mostly just the last piece to plug into a rocket ship that was ready to blast off into outer space. Sort of a hired gun – he wasn’t involved long enough to go nutzo. Good for him.
And good for us since the Foo Fighters was basically conceived and nurtured while Kurt and Courtney laid around in shambolic dingy rooms doing horse.

Nirvana
The one I read was Heavier than Heaven.
I couldn’t put it down. Someone mentioned how vetted it seemed by Courtney, but with that subject matter I don’t really register anything political/extracurricular. If the Azzerad book’s the one I’m thinking of, yeah, it did look like the token book Tower Records puts in the impulse buy section to get a few more bucks.
He has another one that I enjoyed though, Our Band Could Be Your Life. Now that I think was more a labor of love, and genuine objective storytelling.
I met him briefly after that voice-over Nirvana movie, Been A Son I think it was called?

Bakersfield Blaze relief pitcher Josh Lueke was arrested May 27 and is being held in Lerdo Jail on rape charges.
Lueke, in his second season with the Blaze, faces felony charges of rape and sodomy of an unconscious victim.
Bail has been set at $150,000.
Lueke faces pretrial hearings July 1-2.
Blaze general manager Shawn Schoolcraft declined to comment on Lueke’s status with the team. A media relations representative with the Blaze’s parent club, the Texas Rangers, has not responded to a telephone message and e-mail.
Lueke, who is 6-foot-5, 220 pounds and 24 years old, is a Kentucky native.
He has not pitched for Bakersfield since May 23.

that sees Feliz’s outings unproductive?
I don’t see how Feliz is learning anything by throwing FB’s 90% of the time? Shouldn’t he be working on his secondary pitches? How is he suppose to get better if most of his pitches are FBs? We know you have a good FB, work on everything else.

He did really well in ST
and I don’t think he had these issues with FB command at the time though his control did decline a bit after his promotion to AA last year. I think he is just working through some mechanical issues. He has an AA curve that flashes plus (though how often I don’t know) and has made a lot of progress on his change since coming into the system. I’m not too worried. He can work through all of these things for the rest of the year, getting his mechanics in gear and then working on his secondary stuff, then maybe go to winter ball, and compete for a rotation spot next year. He’s young and doesn’t have a lot of innings under his belt so all the hype regarding his immanent arrive was a bit premature.
