Holland next year = Lester?

by scoop16 on Jun 6, 2009 8:37 PM CDT reply actions

I was thinking this...

watching the game. Their velocity is similar. Lester just knows how to pitch a little better, has a little more experience, and better control/use of his off speed stuff.

I think Lester would be a very good comp for Holland if he turns out to be what most of us think/hope he can be.

And Lester Has a More Experienced

Catcher, thats one of the biggest problems we have on this team, i think rather than 2 very young catchers we should have brought in a vet (at least to mentor the younger catcher (Salty or Tea) I guess Pudge was available since he went to Astros, though he is probably not a good teaching type

by TRFAN on Jun 7, 2009 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Meh...

I don’t think the catching has much to do with it. Salty has improved greatly from last year and I have faith in him now defensively and calling a game. TT has always been seen as a good catcher and someone who works well with pitchers and calls a good game too.

As far as Pudge goes the last thing he wants to do is be a backup while mentoring and teaching a young catcher. He wants to be the starting catcher and play everyday. That simply wasn’t going to happen in Arlington.

Hire

Brad Ausmus as a coach.

Our catching is fine. Teagarden looks like he is an ideal backup catcher, and maybe Salty will get his bat going.

by texasraider on Jun 6, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Because the good outweighs the bad

The good being he allows a young arm time to develop and get more or consistent innings in AAA instead of coming up and throwing 8 innings in a months time.

The bad is when he is brought in the game is pretty much toast. So you only use him in blowouts and you don’t worry about what his stats are.

He keeps you from using multiple guys multiple innings in blowouts saving them for closer games.

True with putting him in bad situations

But I think Holland should be used out of the bullpen as originally planned. Have him only start innings though, no coming in with 2 on and no outs. There are plenty of pitchers on the roster now to develop Holland this way.

by Mark from OC on Jun 6, 2009 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Only problem is, Wash refuses to use him that way

And I don’t trust him to change now. At this point I think I might rather see him starting in OKC than be at Ron’s mercy in the ’pen.

Then JD, Nolan, or someone needs to sit down with Ron

And discuss what would be best for both the Rangers in 2009 and for Holland’s development. Both are important.

by Mark from OC on Jun 6, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Honestly

I wouldn’t mind him getting sent down to OKC and get regular starts there. It seems as though his confidence might have taken a bit of a hit the way things have gone for him the past few weeks.

He can dominate down there and get that confidence back up.

by behindthebag on Jun 6, 2009 8:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, demoting him might impact his confidence too

But yeah. I don’t think a couple months of honing his breaking pitches on AAA hitters and getting back into a rythym as a starter could possibly hurt him in the long run.

If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339

Hello Win Column

by LSJ on Jun 6, 2009 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree. It looks like to me that in the 5th inning he needed a slightly different look.

That changeup that Bay hit for a single wasn’t a good enough “slightly different look”. But, he won’t be able to work on it coming out of the pen. It seems like sending him back to the pen might slow his development for next year, the year the Rangers are really supposed to be contenders.

I could care less

whether knee-jerk assholes on LSB “hang with him”. He’s clearly a talented young guy who has a great chance of succeeding. To me, he’s already better than a guy like Harrison because he has shown a capability to miss bats. Holland just needs to learn how to hone his craft.

"A good start would be not giving up 900 runs again." -Jon Daniels

by Randy Richardson on Jun 6, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

The question is, should he be learning in the majors?

At this point, the Rangers have a legitimate playoffs shot. Do you use a starting position on the team for him to learn to hone his craft, or does he learn to hone his craft in AAA or out of the bullpen? I think it can be done out of the bullpen without hurting the Rangers’ season.

by Mark from OC on Jun 6, 2009 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he's holding his own in the

majors. It’s not like he’s flat out sucking. Tonight he alternated between dominating and making mistakes. A lefty who can strikeout Pedroia, Youkilis(twice), and Bay is doing something right.

I don’t have the answer for whether he should be in the rotation or the bullpen. I imagine he’ll go to the bullpen when Harrison returns, but will be called on the next time a starter misses a start or goes on the DL.

I dunno

Tell you the truth, I don’t really know what the fuck he throws these days, but looking at Fangraphs the velo is down on all his stuff so far this year, and his fastball, slider and cutter don’t seem to be nearly as effective lately according to the pitch values.

If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339

First off, junkball crap implies that's he's throwing Jamie Moyer type shit.

He went on the DL for a month for arm fatigue and as a result only has 5 starts under his belt. His FB velo was 88-89 in his two horrific starts before his time off and it’s been better since he’s returned (same story for his secondary stuff).

Rub his nose in it a little.

In his defense...

LSB clearly has a stacked lineup that is hard to break into.

Sorry, I forgot he was breaking in as a pitcher.

Not particularly for me

Their fully rested and very good bullpen makes daisuke’s short outings irrelevant and I’m pretty sure padilla will suck. It will be a great win if we pull it out though.

the preceding post was a great success.

I think Padz will come out spitting fire

My guess is he has his best start of the year, but nothing he could do would surprise me.

That dude is a true enigma. I kinda can’t help but like him.

I think

we will see “Good Padilla” today.

Didnt see the game

Was at a wedding and im curious….

Was Lester that good or was it just our offense doing their normal thing?

lester was that good

thats probably 3 or fewer hits against most teams. dominant.

the preceding post was a great success.

I'd say at least on par

with Grienke’s outing as the best stuff the Rangers have seen this year. A legit 2 hitter, even though we weren’t patient it wouldn’t have mattered as we would’ve been down in the count either way. Tip of the cap.

Best fucking stuff i've seen all year, his fastball was sitting 96-98 most of the night

He then just fooled every one of our hitters with really good off-speed pitches. I don’t think anybody could top that kind of performance.
