Vizquel talks about playing for the BoSox

In a Boston Herald story from this morning, Omar Vizquel talks about the possibility of playing for the Red Sox:

It seems every time the Red Sox need a shortstop, my name gets brought up. Now, I don’t think I’m in a good position to leave. We’re winning here, we have a good thing going. I don’t know if Texas would really let me go. We’ll see. Maybe later in the season? Who knows. I don’t want to close any doors.

Vizquel said that he wished that the Red Sox had contacted him over the offseason, stating:

It would have been great. The Red Sox are a veteran team. All I’d have to do here is make the plays at short. I don’t think they’d worry about me hitting too much.

However, the author states that the Red Sox have indeed contacted the Rangers about a possible trade, but the Rangers were not interested.  Also, the author also stated that Vizquel had nothing bad to say about the Rangers.

Yep

Wait a few more weeks then pull the trigger. I don’t think Elvis needs too much more “mentoring”

or Jose Vallejo

who would be much preferable to those other 2.

Yeah

But of the three it would pain me the most to see Vallejo sitting on the bench 6 days a week

you keep talking about not wanting rookies to be on the ML bench

I think you have a decent point, but you take it too far.

The Rangers are surprisinly legit contenders, if there are moves that they can make to improve the last man in the bullpen, or the utility guy, those type upgrades might make a difference of 1-2 wins. When you are trying to win the division, you make those upgrades every single time. You owe it to the fans and especially the players and manager to have your best 25 players on the big league roster during a pennant race.

Being with the big league players and coaches and experiencing the grind of a big league pennant race isn’t going to hinder the development of young players, in fact it might be the best thing for them.

Tell me something

If Vizquel is traded do you think Arias gets the same amount of playing time Omar is getting? I don’t. I think if Omar gets traded Elvis becomes our everyday SS who may get one or two days off a month. Kinsler and Young don’t get/take days off so your utility man would be for pinch running and very very spot starts. I fail to see how Vallejo is an improvement over Arias in such a short sample period. Over an extended period of time yeah Vallejo is the better player. But when you are talking about maybe 20 ABs a month I just don’t think it is in the organization or the players(Vallejo in this case) best interest to have them sit the bench.

I hate seeing young guys with potential riding the bench. Especially when they could be getting playing time in AAA. SO what if they have nothing left to prove down there and they are destroying the league. If I can’t promise them enough playing time I don’t want them in the majors. It has to be a major upgrade for me to replace the incumbent for a rookie or young player. And Vallejo over Arias or Mathis over Benson isn’t enough of an upgrade to warrant having a young player sit the bench that much

None of the potential

young guys would get as much playing time as Omar, but if the return is Buckholtz, I’m completely okay with that. Andrus played every day for pretty much every team he’s ever been on. Arias sitting on the bench wouldn’t bother me. They could also find a AAA shortstop from someone to ride the pine in Arlington.

Vizquel doesn’t have long and if the Rangers can maximize his value along with those other pieces for a legit young starting pitcher I really don’t care what it does to the backup SS and starting DH.

What’s not to like about this rotation?

Millwood
Buckholtz
Feldman
Padilla
MCarthy/Harrison

Whichever of the last one is healthy and least able to handle the bullpen. You release Padilla in the winter and trade McCarthy putting both Harrison and Holland in the rotation next season. That’s a darn good rotation.

No kidding.

I thought we had addressed that fact in the Jeff Wilson mailbag thread.

Who said Vizquel

is the centerpiece?

Blalock filling their massive hole at DH, Teagarden starting his apprenticeship for their future catching situation, then Vizquel filling their SS problem along with a legit pitching prospect.

Heck they can name the pitcher as long as it’s not Feliz, Perez, or Holland. I just thought Main was a good start. Poveda or Gomez or whomever, even Font who I don’t want to move to help even it out.

Well then you won't get a deal done
Heck they can name the pitcher as long as it’s not Feliz, Perez, or Holland.

They would want one of those guys or no deal. That deal you are proposing wouldn’t even get them to pick up the phone.

That'll never work

Teagarden and Blalock have both sucked this year. So has Main. You’re not getting a guy who’s been rated as a top three prospect in baseball for a half a year of of a 40-something shortstop and a DH who’s only been worth a half a win this year, along with a young catcher and a hype-driven prospect who are both having shitty seasons.

If you want an analogy

That’s like grabbing a couple rusty power tools from your garage, the bike you got for Christmas that you hardly ever ride, throwing in a nice pair of silver candlesticks and telling your neighbor you’ll trade him the lot for his ride-along lawnmower with the adjustable blades and the GPS system in case you get lost mowing the yard.

The candlesticks might be worth something someday, but your neighbor is going to laugh his ass off.

Yeah, but..

we all know the lawnmower lacks the power it had when it was first assembled and brought up in Sears.

Bard seems like an interesting arm to take a look at.

I wonder what it’d take to get Hagadone from them? Perhaps the injury concern/comeback might cheapen the price a bit. I read he is still pretty highly regarded in Red Sox inner circles.

Boston

likely would not. They don’t need Blalock, may very likely think of Teagarden as a backup, and see Main struggling in High A.

Come on...

they are going to need a SS if Lugo keeps playing like he has. Blalock is a huge upgrade over what Ortiz is giving them so far. TT, even if he is a backup, would give them the good young catching prospect they are looking for. Main may be struggling so far, but look what he did last year.

For the people that keep shooting down any trade proposal for Buchholz. he’s not Babe Ruth. If the BoSox had a chance to upgrade 2 spots in their lineup, get a young backup catcher and a good young pitching prospect for just Buchholz they would be crazy not do it. Buchholz is not Halladay or Greinke…at least he hasn’t shown he is yet.

that trade looks so good

i can’t really find the hole in it. Maybe that we are giving up blalock? it seems weird but I feel like it has been nice to have an extra slugger (even if he is a really streaky slugger) given that the offense hasn’t been great to start the season. Not like we can just rely on max.

but yeah, I would still do the trade

I would still want...

a good arm for the ’pen if the Rangers were to offer those four for Buchholz. Although Main is doing a very good job of worrying everyone right now. If it was just for Buchholz then I would either replace TT with MaxRam or downgrade the pitching prospect from Main to a little lower prospect.

But the deal would mkae a lot of sense for both teams. I’d be interested to see what the BoSox fan who occasionally posts here (OCD SS?) thinks of it.

Lowrie

Isn’t Lowrie supposed to be coming off the DL soon?

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 7, 2009 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

3 Weeks

This article says three weeks till he most likely comes back to Boston; about one week until minor league rehab starts.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 7, 2009 6:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would think so...

but MLBTR had some stuff on the Red Sox talking to the A’s (Orlando Cabrerra) and Pirates (Jack Wilson). According to the article, they would rather not take Wilson because he costs more, and they might need some money for another DH. They are probably just doing their due diligence for a worst case scenario.

why do they need a SS?

they have this guy named lowrie thats pretty solid and starting his minor league rehab in abt a week lol

Forget about Bucholz

never gonna happen.
And Vizquel (or Blalock) alone is not going to get you Bard, Bowden, or Masterson. If you want a more realistic deal for a reliever, you could try looking at Ramon Ramirez or Delcarmen for Blalock and/or Vizquel.

If you're Boston and you've got plenty of relief depth, yup.

I’d rather pry Josh Willingham away from the Nats though.
