Sunday morning Rangers things
Evan Grant writes that last night's game provides a contrast between where Derek Holland is now, and what the Rangers hope he becomes. Jon Lester consistently threw strikes and got ahead of hitters, while locating his pitches well, whereas Holland struggled to throw first pitch strikes.
Jeff Wilson's game story has some quotes from Holland indicating that he wasn't focused and didn't go after hitters, but Michael Young had praise for Holland and says he wants the Rangers to keep him in the rotation.
Frankie Francisco felt better yesterday, and it sounds like he'll be available today, although he may not be available on back-to-back games for a little while going forward. Matt Harrison, meanwhile, reported no problems after his rehab start yesterday.
The Boston Herald has a story about Boston's interest in Omar Vizquel, and Vizquel's interest in playing for Boston.

I am probably reading too much into this but.....
“His line isn’t going to look as good as he threw,” Young said. “I’d love to see us keep running him out there. I’m not big on pumping up rookies, but I love this kid. He competes, he wants to be good and he wants to take his game to the next level.”
Does anyone else have a problem with the acknowledged leader of the team having this type of attitude towards rookies?

No.
Why would it matter if he talks up rookies to the media?

Ok
If it’s just in the media then that’s cool. I took it to mean he didn’t do it at all.

Why should he "pump up rookies"?
Doesn’t that kind of take away from the other people on teams and put more pressure on kids?
Go Rice Owls!
I thought
veterans mostly hazed rookies, and position players didn’t talk to pitchers or vice versa.

Notes from Josh Lewin, who was on Elf's show this morning:
MY literally ran to the mound to congratulate/console Holland when he knew he was being pulled from the game.
Elvis, while sitting around with the guys watching Stepbrothers (again), during the Catalina Wine Mixer scene, quietly said (paraphrasing a bit here) – ‘That song was originally sung by Andrea Bocelli, who is blind.’ Josh says he is an incognito renaissance man, and is very, very bright.

Bocelli
Not meaning to disparage Elvis’ taste or musical knowledge, but Bocelli is pure pop culture, not Renaissance stuff. Knowing Bocelli is blind hardly qualifies one to sip Chianti with the Medicis, Josh.

it's still a lot more than I knew at 20
I didn’t figure out about Bocelli being blind until I turned 21

I'm jaded on this
because I’m probably the only guy here who coaches singers and has conducted opera. This will sound cold, but if Bocelli wasn’t a blind teddy bear no one would care about his singing. He’s just not that good. And knowing who he is could just mean you have a mom that watches Oprah.

I'm reacting
to people who think of him as an opera singer. His technique is poor, freshman voice major in college level, I’m completely serious. Obviously he has other skills and the total package is good from that standpoint, but purely on technique, he would have a hard time passing a junior recital as a voice major. He’s a nice pop singer, no more.

I just love Con te Partiro
that song’s so awesome…and he’s got a few more that are really good, to me. But yeah I’m no connoisseur of opera.

Minor typo
“but Michael Young had praise for Young and says he wants the Rangers to keep him in the rotation” of course is praise for Holland.

Make it happen but it's going to take more
I’d say Vizquel, Hank, Max and and lower level pitching prospect….
Double hmmmm

i dunno
if thats gonna do it. two rentals, a slumping catcher who prolly won’t catch, and a lower level pitcher who could be hit or miss for a top prospect in baseball… its not like boston hates buch.

Hmmm...
maybe if that pitching prospect was Main.
If Big Papi and Lugo continue to struggle, the Rangers seem to have the pieces they need to match up in a deal. They also would like a young catcher to take over for the Captain when he’s done.
Let’s say Blalock, Vizquel, TT, and Main for Buchholz and a bullpen arm. Would the BoSox do that? Maybe not, but it shouldn’t be too far off either.

I definitely
want at least two prospects in return if we’re going to be trading away a critical piece of a contending team
Go Rice Owls!
But not any washed-up AAAA players, right?
I mean, he has to suck if Boston doesn’t want to call him up after years in the minors.

Why wouldn't Boston do it?
A ML shortstop for a minor league pitcher. Even the blind can see this is a no brainer.

who does he think should vacate a spot?

MY saying he would like to see
Holland stay in the rotation does give JD the opportunity to do just that and not have the team “whine” about the move later. I think Padilla has a new home before the ASB.
