by DShep on Jun 7, 2009 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a very liberal interpretation of what I said

You said you like Bay more because of his body of work, which includes what he did 4 years ago. My point, which I guess I didn’t make very clearly, is that Yuk has been a better player over the last 1.3 years, and what the two have done years before their recent performances wouldn’t factor into my equation of Yuk>Bay. Bay’s a good player, but for one game, one season, one at bat, I’d take Yuk. End transmission.

He was out

It’s not the umpire’s fault and it’s not because he didn’t slide correctly.

He never should have been sent in the first place.

by Black Francis on Jun 7, 2009 2:34 PM CDT reply actions

huh?

If he was never tagged, then isn’t that by definition the umpire’s fault for not making the right call.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Jun 7, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure he wasn't tagged

It was still going to be too close to send a 40 something year old guy with the short left field there.

by Black Francis on Jun 7, 2009 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

The last replay seems to have a pretty good consensus that he wasn't tagged

And you take the risk there with 2 outs like Adam said. Who cares how old he is? He’s still much faster than a Molina brother.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Jun 7, 2009 2:38 PM CDT up reply actions

He's lost a step

Short left field. Simple fucking concept. Ball gets out there quicker, oufielder is closer and can make a better throw. Visquel is no longer a burner so you hold him up because it’s going to be close, and like Adam says below, the runner doesn’t get the call very often in that situation. Grieve explained that pretty well…it’s hard for blue to see the the tag of the plate and the tag of the runner at almost the same time.

by Black Francis on Jun 7, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

If it is 50/50...

…you send him.

Because there isn’t a 50/50 chance that the next batter gets him home.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 7, 2009 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Obviously the third base coach disagreed

But when I was watching it I did not think there was a 50 percent chance to score there. I like aggressive base running but it depends on the situation.

by Black Francis on Jun 7, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

well Young's got something like a .380-.385 OBP on the season

If it was even 60/40 that he doesn’t make it, you’ve still got a better chance than banking on Young.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Jun 7, 2009 2:48 PM CDT up reply actions

There is a difference between

being thrown out and running into an out. If the throw is off either to the left or right, Vizquel is likely safe.

Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY

by RangerMad on Jun 7, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, you won't get the call often, but that's not a reason to not try

You can’t predict if the situation will play out that way to where you don’t get the call. That’s why you take your chances.

Yes, Vizquel has lost a step, but he’s still not extremely slow and it took a couple of perfect throws to get him “out”.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw

by Gdawg on Jun 7, 2009 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Again it's a short LF

it’s much easier to make a good throw home there.

I’m not going to argue about this anymore. It’s pointless and is keeping me from watching the game.

by Black Francis on Jun 7, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions

From the 1st base side angle

he looked safe. Tek missed the tag. We need instant replay for that.

I think he means Boggs

Like I’ve said before, Boggs should get some of the starts against lefties, but I’m not ready to limit Murphy to being a platoon hitter only.

Well

Again, I’m not suggesting he’s a permanent solution, but this team needs someone who won’t be another first-pitch out — like Byrd, Blalock, et al.

They need people who can hit

Against lefties, Murphy can’t hit. The fact that he doesn’t hit while seeing a few pitches doesn’t change the fact that he doesn’t hit lefties.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 7, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Byrd this year vs lefties

.234 avg. .698 Ops. And Murph is heating up right now.

Byrd is better than Murphy

against lefties.

I'd prefer a guy who sees more than 1 pitch per at bat

But then again, I can’t stand Byrd. Also, I can’t stand Hank in the 3-hole. I’d prefer Murphy, who can at least work the occasional walk.

That's why they call them business sox

by egriffey on Jun 7, 2009 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Why can't you stand Byrd?

He’s not great, but he’s been better than Murphy.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 7, 2009 3:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Byrd's too swing happy this season

He’s still not bad, but he’s got to start being more selective at the plate. And Murphy after his slow start has been very good.
