The 6-7 "My God TBS sucks" Minors Thread

I am pretty sure Ron Darling is retarded. My god, that was the worst broadcast I have ever heard, not only did the three broadcasters have all the attention span of a gnat, but there were at least two play-by-plays missed each inning because the three stooges decided that the entire world just had to hear their hot sport opinions about controversial and rarely addressed topics such as David Ortiz's slump and how Texas Rangers traded five aces. Honestly, it sounds like they did all of 5 minutes of research for the only fucking game they had all week. That's just a poorly constructed, lazy broadcast crew, and I hope they all get genital herpes. Except for David Wells, that guy needs to get hit by a truck.

Also, what's with that weird "First Batter Faced" statistic display rather than, you know, things that matter like walk rate, strike out rate, IP, ERA, or even holds and saves. It just reeks of trying too hard.

Today in the minors, the Hickory Crawdads have already gotten it going. Carlos Pimentel has been awesome so far, giving up only 2 hits and 1R in 4IP.

The Bakersfield Blaze tries to earn a series split with the San Jose Giants with Michael Main taking the mound for the Blaze. MM has been lit up by the Giants this year, including that disappointing show down against Tim Alderson. It'll be good to see MM do well against this great lineup.

Omar Poveda goes back to Frisco today. He'll face Northwest Arkansas at 6 PM. The NY Arkansas team has a lot of guys way too old for the Texas League, so it'll be good to see another strong performance from Omar.

Finally, the OKC Redhawks sends out Josh Rupe against the Isotopes and hopes he won't suck too much. Don't hold your breath.

Discussion: Fastballs, Fastballs, and More Fastballs

I've done a bit of pitch tracking this year, and while the majority of the announcers cannot properly differentiate between a slider and a curve, the ability to differentiate between fastballs and breaking balls is pretty good. So far, it seems like a lot of the Ranger's top prospects are fastball happy. Neftali Feliz's last start had him around 85% FB. Kennil Gomez's had him at 80%. There were some starts where Wilmer Font uses 90%+ FB. In fact, the only prospects who consistently use their breaking stuff are Kasey Kiker and Blake Beavan, and even Beavan is frequently above 70% FB. What do you think is the reason for our over-reliance on fastballs? Do you think it impacts the development of their breaking stuff? Do you think it's a healthy developmental regimen?

Wasn't he throwing more than that in Spokane

I thought he was up to 95 mph on FB? But this might be why he has been so delayed to start pitching, to build up the fastball velocity.

Fastballs

That’s discouraging, especially for Feliz — then again, it’s easy to forget how young he is. I would, however, like to see him at least at 75-25 percent fb to breaking stuff. He might struggle, but it will be better long term.

That's why they call them business sox

How so?

Unless he’s getting tons of foul balls, it’s about how many strikes he can throw. If he’s not throwing the fastball for strikes, then he needs to work on his command… thus more fastballs.

is such a different pitcher in the minors.

2 perfect innings, 3 Ks, 22 pitches.

Whittleman and Fox

could boil down to who gets let go??? Just a thought. I;d think Fox would go before Whittleman. Adam Fox had a good night and johnny did too except fpr the errors. But whittleman is a lot younger

What did they do?

That does kinda suck

That would fall under the “things that happen when Ron doesn’t have enough confidence in you to even play you” category.

No

Its what happens when you bring up a young player and put them in the longman/mopup guy and we don’t need them for 2 weeks.

Its one of the reasons I am so against releasing Benson just so we can give his spot to Mathis or Mendoza. Id much rather have a 30 something veteran hardly being used than a young guy who just needs to pitch as much as possible

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Normally, there will be sitiatuions in which you can get your long man some work in if you have one who's deserving of it

I’d like to at least have a long man who can come in and have a shot at shutting the opposing team down after the carnage is over, instead of causing it to mount. Benson seems incapable of that. But unfortunately, Wash was (somewhat understandably) extremely leery of using his mid and long relievers early this year (that might be part of the reason we’re where we are with Fx2) and between that and what happened last year, it seemed Wash never really wanted to use him.

Heck, he didn’t even give him a chance to rebound that night he gave up the grannie in the rain-delayed game.

the gut does not believe in luis mendoza

all hail the gut.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

OT: checking in on Nick Masset

seems to be coming into his own this season. 0.86 era and currently working on a 10.1 scoreless inning streak.

He makes Scott Feldman's BABIP look like a black cat's

Masset’s is .148. If that ain’t getting lucky, I dunno what is.
