So, Mitch Moreland has had back-to-back big games in Frisco now
Too soon to get too worked up still, but… I’m starting to believe.
If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339
Moreland
I wonder what his role is in this organization. He just keeps hitting and hitting. I believe he is a below avg fielder in right but that doesnt seem to matter because you would think the Rangers would have an OF of Borbon, Hamilton, and Cruz going forward.
At first/DH the Rangers are looking at Smoak and Davis although Davis is looking more and more like a .200 hitter. Is Moreland going to be a the second iteration of Jason Botts? Just mashes in the minors but never really gets a chance in the majors (IMO). Seems like one of those guys that will prove a lot of ppl wrong.
Depending on what transpires in coming months
Seems like he could either be a nice trade chip to package in a big deal with some other prospects or a guy who frees us up to trade another of our 1B/DH types.
If Moreland keeps hitting, I think it’s good news for everybody.

I'd like to think we're going to acquire one of
Buchholz, Johnson, Cain or the likes over the next year via trade. I would assume that Davis, Smoak or Moreland could be included in the deal along with a catcher and some pitching. That’s not a bad situation to be in…

Yeah, that's what I'd hope to see
Is Moreland and Davis make each other attractive trade bait.
I don’t want to trade Smoak no matter what though. His approach is exactly what this team is missing right now.

I don't disagree
I’d rather it be Moreland that is traded. I love Davis. In spite of what all he’s gone through during about 60 at bats this year. And Smoak is the future at 1B. I just really don’t want to lose those two.

Moreland
If he keeps this up he would have to be in the DH discussion. Especially since Max is a contender for it and Moreland and Max have similar minor league numbers up to AA
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
That was my first thought
If Max has value as a catcher then one of he or Tea will be traded and Moreland comes into the discussion for DH because right now Davis is playing his way of the the major leagues.
Anyone catch what's happened to Joe Ortiz?

I'm not really sure.
I know he was rehabbing in Arizona for awhile. I think he’s still in Arizona, but pitching in the Extended Spring Training games. But I’m not 100% on that.

Michael Inoa -
A’s top pitching prospect Michael Inoa has been shut down indefinitely with a sore right elbow.
Inoa, 17, underwent an MRI this week that should tell us all a little more. “We’re in the process of determining how severe it is,” assistant GM David Forst said Saturday. Inoa (or Ynoa, depending who you ask) was given a record-setting $4.25 million signing bonus in July.

Meh. We're set at 3b for quite a while, methinks.
That said, Borchering may very well be the best player on the board when we pick, and if so I hope we pick him.
I’m still rooting for one of the big HS arms or Scheppers or Crow or Tate.
Certainly wouldn’t be mad with Borchering, though.

Possibly. I don't have a subscription to BA.
They’re rumored to be going cheap to afford Miguel Sano, this year’s big time LA prize.
Who knows, though.
Like I said, I wouldn’t be mad at all with Borchering, there are just other brosephs I’d prefer.

You know what...
it was KLaw. It was scrolling yesterday during the CWS. If Bochering, Leake and Miller were all on the board, who do you take?
by Michael Cave on Jun 8, 2009 12:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Jeez, that's tough... Out of just those three... Gun to my head...
Prolly Miller.
I love ceilinged HS arms.
Leake I’m not terribly high on, but Trip is, and he is big in all the ways that I am little, so it’d be tough to pass on him here.
And Borchering is a polished HS bat with ceiling. If I was sure he’d stick at 3b he might be the pick, but as is I’d prolly take Miller and Leake over him.
I’d be fine with either of those three, though.
The 40 Trumps All!!!
Chris Davis will be fine. Relax.
I think I'd be happy with either Leake or Miller
but I don’t know that anyone who’s going to fall to Texas just gives me warm fuzzies. All of the possible pitchers will have caveats, and none of the position players get me too excited. Borchering has a lot of offensive potential, but I don’t think they’re sure that he’ll be able to stay at 3B, and unless he’s just a fantastic hitter, I think I’d prefer that Texas avoid 3B who may or may not stay at 3B up high. He’s moved way up, but I think that his projection at #4 does not reflect him moving up past Texas on draft boards, but the possibility that top ten teams go the cheap route, as suggested by senior commish.

Purke
If not for his bonus demands, where would he be going?
That seems to be the biggest caveat with him, the money…

I guess it depends on how you look at it. I agree with you about the money being the biggest caveat, for example, if we are looking at him for #14. What I meant was that, with respect to the money, the caveat with Purke would be his mechanics. That and the fact that he just isn’t the same sort of prospect as a Porcello but wants that kind of contract. Now Matzek, I think I’d give him what he wants, even though they don’t seem to think he’s on that plane either.

I know so little about this year’s draft class…hadn’t heard that about Purke’s mechanics, good to know.

I would flip if
Matzek fell to the Rangers. Honestly, im becoming more and more of a Leake fan. I dont think Miller has ace potential at all. I think he has #2 potential but also a good chance of busting. I really believe that Leake will be a solid #3 and a solid #5 at worst. I also think he will move very quickly through the system.
Matzek
Gone in the first 5, no doubt about it.

Agree
but after last year the imagination is running wild haha.
Given that
we don’t know if Miller will make it to Texas, if Texas has any interest in paying Purke, or that either is that stud that you want if you’re going to take a HS guy, I’d be pretty content with Leake as well. I don’t really buy into the notion of him being a different prospect or them needing polish or whatever, but he may just be the best prospect. It is troubling to me that a college pitcher who is so dominant and doesn’t have ridiculous demands would fall to 14 in a draft like this, but maybe his stuff will play up, and maybe part of the downgrade is his size, which I’m not that worried about.

Did you get a chance
to see his start the other night? His control is impeccable. He does a great job of extending the plate. Real smooth delivery (his arm slot just looks so natural). With his skillset I see a lot of Brad Radke in him which I guess would be even better than a solid #3.
I really feel that one of Scheppers or Leake will fall
and Oakland will take them.
The CJ hate is getting old.

In the Callis/Manuel "fantasy draft today
Manuel takes Leake for the Rangers:
14. RANGERS (John). The Rangers would love to get a Texas prep fireballer to put into a system already deep with power arms. Shelby Miller and Matthew Purke both fit that bill. But the Rangers have plenty of young fireballers, and Purke’s pricetag worries me. They could use a fast-rising college pitcher who knows how to lead a pitching staff and win, while also having wicked stuff. That’s Arizona State righthander Mike Leake. I’m not too worried about the 370-plus innings Leake has thrown in college. Maybe I should be, but he’s been so efficient, it’s hard to look past him at this spot.

He wasnt one of the guys
that Andy seiler profiled as having a big time workload in college. That 128 pitches that Alex White threw the other day really alarmed me.
I would have profiled him.
But I couldn’t find exact pitch counts for every outing. There were a few missing. He’s thrown quite a lot.

Defense
To what extent do ya’ll think the crappy farm defense has contributed to the regression (at least, statistically) of several of our top pitching prospects? Even if the runs don’t count as earned, there has to be a toll in the added work load per inning and the lack of confidence in the guys behind you. For example, Millwood contributed the team’s success this year to defense and the confidence the pitchers have in not having to strike everybody out. If the farm pitchers don’t have this confidence, they may struggle.

Not just defense
There have been reports of some of these guys working on specific things, so their numbers might suffer there, as well. Last year was almost unreal, though, in terms of guys playing well, developing their skills, and putting up great numbers. Those three things don’t always go together with minor leaguers, even very talented ones.

Nam and Bianucci
With their loss today Hickory is like six out in the loss column, but I wonder if they aren’t just waiting for midseason with these two and Bianucci in particular. They are older players (though Nam hasn’t turned 22 yet) who are too good for this level, but they also probably provide stability for that young team, while certainly not clogging up a spot that a promising younger player would otherwise get (like Bleier and Springston did in the rotation).

Saw his line today, his season line is rediculous
Reminds me of Italiano last year for the As. A bit old for the log, dominated. I’d like to see what happens after a promotion. Is he a legit relief prospect?
Italiano
has a huge power arm, I thought. I thought Nam was more of a pitchability lefty with a fastball that doesn’t hit 90 but a plus curve.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
Two pitch pitcher?
He’s throwing a change up in that second pic!!! (Probably why he got rocked in that second inning…)

Not sure that you can draw any conclusions from it, but he has clicked on in June. For May (7 g) he went 2-28 with a 2:12 BB:SO after his activation. In his six June games he’s 7-19 (.368/.520/.632) with a 5:7. I guess the girls in the crowd haven’t been as hot this month.

Feliz and MaxRam stuff in the OKC paper
Feliz —
Starting pitcher Neftali Feliz has some of the best stuff in minor league baseball, including a fastball that has been clocked at more than 100 mph this season. But if there’s one thing that’s held Feliz back, it’s his inability to work deeper in games. All of that begs the question: Is it possible Feliz’ ultimate destination is the bullpen as a flame-throwing closer?
.
“It’s going to be up to the Rangers," RedHawks pitching coach Terry Clark said. "They’ll figure out what role they want him in. I think he can do either role. He can be a guy who can come in late and throw fastballs. His curve ball has come a long way. He’s a lot like Edinson Volquez, but his arm is better than Edinson’s."
MaxRam -
RedHawks catcher Max Ramirez has had a tough season so far. He has a .238 average and 51 strikeouts in 143 at bats. He’s currently on the disabled list with a wrist injury, something Rangers minor league hitting coordinator Mike Boulanger thinks has been a big source of Ramirez’s struggles.
.
“In my opinion, he’s had some nagging injuries since winter ball that also went into the World Baseball Classic," Boulanger said. "I don’t think he’s been healthy the whole year. For a hitter, if your hands, wrist and thumbs don’t feel right, it does hurt your bat speed. It causes you to cheat in some way, usually working off the ball trying to get your swing through your upper body."
MaxRam...
sure would be nice if he could put his struggles on health.
If he comes back healthy and starts to rake like he has before it would be a great sign.

I went to the Frisco game
Diamond’s FB was getting outs – sitting about 90. I don’t know if he accomplished much with anything off-speed, tho’.
Kiker sat at 89. I saw 90 once. He worked slow, got hit hard and utterly deflated my Kiker wienie.
One pitch woulda hit the bull if the RR’s had a bull wandering around near the backstop.
Garr looked better than his line – really worked on his off-speed stuff and was sitting 93/94.
Kind of a funky delivery, tho’.
Moreland and Smith hit the ball hard – very nice. Osuna hit liners all night, too.
Tracy got robbed at the 400 ft sign by Duarte. Duarte’s fast. Real fast.
I got pics. If any of them are interesting I’ll share. Lemme go thru ’em.
Diamond's slider is definitely improving.
I’m back from the ledge, but only about half of a step.
It looks like a hard curve, but it’s still not as good as last year’s curveball was.
Pretty darn good fastball command tonight. That’s what I like to see.
