Monday morning Rangers things
Can't really complain about a 3-3 road trip to Fenway and Yankee Stadium, I don't think.
Vicente Padilla's first start since being placed on waivers was very solid, although he says that there wasn't any special desire to prove the Rangers wrong or anything like that.
Evan Grant thinks Padilla staying and Matt Harrison coming off the d.l. could spell the end of Kris Benson's time with the Rangers, as Derek Holland will be heading back to the bullpen.
Harrison is meeting with Mike Maddux today to see if he will be activated for the start on Thursday, or if he'll make another rehab start. Frankie Francisco, meanwhile, wasn't available yesterday, but is hoping that another day or two of rest will make him good to go.
Kevin Sherrington writes that people expect the Rangers to collapse, but they just keep winning, even with Chris Davis not hitting, Josh Hamilton hurting, one of their starters going unclaimed on waivers, their closer missing time with injury, and their primary setup man having arrived as a waiver claim earlier this season.

Grrr
Am I the only one who is really annoyed with this BS of SBN auto-linking to their worthless player pages? It kinda gets the actual links on the page a little confused, IMO.
I guess I’ll just have to learn not to click on players names, but damn if it’s not annoying.

How does MLB justify
banning Burnett for 6 games and giving Padellia a nothing fine? Clearly, Padilla started it all.

The "line" appears to be
throwing at the head. Padilla hit Teixeira in the butt. Burnett threw at Nelson Cruz’ head.

I think you're underrating them
They’re not for you or me so much as a more casual fan who might be coming here and want some basic info on Chris Davis. There are also articles right there that talk about the player. This would be useful for any of us if we wandered over to another team blog looking for info on a recent call up or other player we weren’t too familiar with. If SBN wants to be a successful business they can’t just cater to people who already know everything about these players.

make the links a different color. When I check them out, I think, “Oh, Adam’s linking to a story about [player name] or some other news item.”
If they were green or purple or whatever, then it would be easy for our core community to ignore them, and also easy for newer people to identify them for useful information. Two birds with one stone.

He’s a smart guy. By now, he’s got to realize his fastball alone won’t dominate Major Leauge hitters for a whole game and that he needs to still work on his change-up and slider.

Don't dislike him
But he needs to mature quite a bit. The American League is not Monterrey, and isn’t the PCL. When Luis learns not to go into shock that somebody hits his best stuff, or calls his fave slider a ball, he’ll be pretty good. Maybe this will happen, maybe not. He’s one of those “oughta” cases, that may never reach “did”.

No, I don't either
There’s a difference between inconsistent strike zones and CJ walking a guy on five pitches with four of them clearly inside the strike zone.
We’re not talking about borderline pitches here, we’re talking about strikes right across the plate.

It might all balance out in the end, though there is no way to really know that
We’re supposed to watch as our pitcher gets squeezed into giving up walks that could lose us the game and just say, “Meh, I’m sure it will eventually balance out.” Does that sound right? Its not whining if you have something legitimate to complain about.

Check out the GDTs. There were people complaining when Padilla was getting squeezed and then Dice-K was getting that exact call.
Also, there were other blatantly missed calls by the umpire that went for both teams, but the low strike thing went against Padilla all day. Also, there were the missed calls on the Vizquel play at home and the Blalock ball down the foul line. Those were tough calls to make but just further show the lack of quality in a lot of Major League umpires. These are plays that could change games and clearly went against the Rangers.

Both sides weren't getting the same zone
Padilla wasn’t getting the low strike called for him at all in some innings.while Dice K was. Maybe overall, the number of missed calls were the same, but it wasn’t the same zone and Padilla was clearly getting squeezed on at least a 2 of his walks yesterday (can’t remember if it was more).

Holland; Padilla; team winning in spite of itself
I’d like to see Holland go to the bullpen for a few more weeks and work on pitching with a plan and mixing up his pitches a bit more. He’s going to be very good, maybe as soon as this summer, easy to forget how young he and Harrison are.
Padilla wasn’t trying to prove anything. Right.
It is kind of amazing how well the team is doing in spite of some of the expected key contributors not really hitting their strides yet. Actually that’s putting it kindly with some. Defense, a hot streak of good pitching last month, and the bats of Young, Cruz, and at times, Kinsler have carried the club. Lately CJ, Darren, and Eddie have been Money. I’m a little worried about Frankie…Does anyone here not expect a trade for a reliever sometime in the next month?

I think the club has shied away from accquiring releif help because of the price involved
Whether it’s money or prospects they don’t seem willing to spend it on what has a tendency to be a short-term commodity. And I can appreciate the frugalness, but if we really wanna go for it this year, trading for a late-inning arm and a high OBP bat to replace Hank would really be nice if it’s done right.

Yes and No
It’s easy to imagine one of those situations where a team is more willing to hold out on making a deal with Texas because if it thinks Texas is desperate and the system is deeper. This may ultimately result in a deal not going through.
If you’re a GM trying to make a deal with, say, Houston who has little depth by giving up a reliever. Houston offers you someone like Bud Norris. Well, you aren’t exactly going to hold out for Jason Castro, who is there only decent high-end prospect. But with Texas, it may make sense to “hold out” for Beavan instead of Boscon and hope Texas gets desperate. Not because you’d rather have Bud Norris over Boscon. But because there is the possibility you can extract more.
Along these same lines, I think teams will always “demand more” from Texas if they are giving Texas pitching, because the presumption of desperation is there (even if it isn’t real).

Part of it
Is I doubt teams are willing to part with middle relief help this early. Trading your bullpen is a sign that you’re throwing in the towel, and we’re still a bit early for GMs to concede the season. Wait until July and I think we might be able to acquire a middle relief arm for a reasonable price.
I agree with you, I don’t want to see us mortgage a decade-long dynasty just to go all-in this year, but if we could get one more 7th/8th inning guy that would make this bullpen borderline dominant.

How fast does Kiko throw?
I’m in no way one of those guys who thinks flamethrowers are the answer, but with Eddie and Jennings rounding out the 7th/8th inning already, it seems like we’d be best off adding a guy who mows ’em down with the heat.
I have no idea if either team would even be interested in making a deal, but I have fixated on Heath Bell as my “dream” addition to this bullpen. Mid-90s fastball, lots of strikeouts, track record of success as a set-up man, ability to close games.

Bullpen Help
Rather than pay for a bullpen arm (given the up and down nature of bullpen guys), why don’t we just wait for Feliz? A pen anchored by Holland, Feliz, CJ, O’Day and Frankie would by pretty solid for the stretch run.

by jcAustin on Jun 8, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because
if you have a good chance to make the playoffs you go for it. I’d like to see the team acquire a very good righty bullpen arm rather than take their chances with Feliz. It kind of depends on their lead at the trade deadline. If the team has a comfortable lead at the deadline, say, 6 or 7 games, I might be more inclined to roll the dice with Feliz given how well they’ve played against the Angels so far this year.
If they sweep the Angels before the all star break, you can take more chances. Of course, any bullpen arm is a bit risky, so even a trade for an established guy has it’s risks I suppose.

No, it isn’t contradictory, and I think your second paragraph is more about projecting than interpreting what I’m saying.
The defense-independent stats for the pitching staff this season is pretty similar to the staff last year.
The Rangers’ team defense as a whole has been much better than last year — 2B, SS, CF, and 1B, in particular.
Young has been crappy defensively this year, but the third base defense last year was also crappy.
Your suggestion that it is contradictory makes as much sense as saying that, well, Team X’s offense is better than last year, but the #3 hitter is hitting like crap, so therefore that can’t be right and is a contradiction.

Have you seen Young's stats with RISP?
Batting average – .149 (Kinsler .368)
OBP – .229 (Kinsler .418)
OPS – .170? (Kinsler .681)
You try again….
Granted, the sample size is smaller but you can make a point either way and back it up with stats.

You need to get past him treating Donuts like dogshit on his cleats last January.

This team is sitting in first place in early June. He gets to balls Face could only dream of getting too. Not to mention Elvis is hitting better than what we all thought he would. I like FFace but if he were still at ss this team might be over .500 but not where it’s at right now. JD was right to move FFace and FFace knows it.

The Andrus decision didn’t belong to Donuts and apparently rested with Nolan (per RG).
If this decision came from Donuts I think it he would have made sure it was leaked to one of his Usual Suspects.

I did not say anything about RG
but he has exactly the same motive as you in spinning this so that it looks like Daniels had nothing to do with it. Daniels has been pursuing up the middle defense guys as long as he’s been GM.
You like to denigrate Daniels for pissing off Young by telling him he needed to move to 3B. But then you want to claim it was Ryan’s idea. So you’re not only shooting the messenger, you’re unrealistically claiming that a move of that magnituded would not have been talked to death in the front office, Daniels included. And once again conveniently forgetting that Ryan endorses Daniels and they get along well.

I don’t know what was the best way to tell Young this was going to happen and JD has said he wishes it could have been handled differently.
JD had so little credibility within the clubhouse and probably didn’t realize to what extent he was the fart in the room.
Upon further review, Nolan should have been the person who talked to Young and left JD out of it given how the players felt about him.

This is a rabbit hole argument and we don’t know all the machinations behind the decision.
Apparently Nolan wanted this to happen last year and was talked out of it for a variety of reasons but it happened this year.
We also know, per Tom Hicks, things don’t go down with this organization unless Nolan approves which is probably the biggest reason why the dumbassery of the Ranger FO came to a sudden screeching halt in February 2008.

Immediately after the Lee trade went down
I heard a comment, I think from Gammons, that the real prize of the trade was not Carlos Lee. Rather, the young Rangers GM Jon Daniels was after this Nelson Cruz, a Triple-A guy with the potential to be an All-Star slugger.
Now, Cruz certainly took his own sweet time in reaching that potential. You ask why JD cut him – well, Cruz’s lack of options and the roster decisions at the end of spring training sort of left JD with no choice. He had to take the chance Cruz could slide through waivers and then reinvent himself at Oklahoma. You ask why JD didn’t bring him up until August – in that Cruz had been a notorious tease for two years and that he was out of options, doesn’t it make sense that JD would be careful in purchasing his contract, making sure that this time Cruz was for real and it wasn’t just deja vu.

Machinations of the decision...
was it initially NR’s idea last year and was he then talked out of it?
was it Donuts pushing this and was it then approved by Nolan?
That’s what I’m saying when I mention the machinations of the decision.
Some things might be his idea and other things might be from Donuts but Nolan Ryan is the ultimate decision-maker.

in on this kind of discussion. A move of that magnitude, and definitely an overall philosophy of improving the defense, is likely discussed by the entire front office many, many times, with different people present at different times. OK, so by that logic
When Wash fills out a lineup card that has everyone scratching their heads, that’s Nolan. Picking up O’Day was Nolan. Signing Benson was Nolan. Last year’s record was because of Nolan as is this year’s.
I disagree. People have roles and jobs. Wash does in game management, JD’s in charge of personnel and Nolan’s in charge of the business side. Does that mean the three don’t talk to each other about various matters? Of course. But that doesn’t mean that Nolan “decided” to bring up Elvis nor has Nolan decided to not send CD down.

We have agreeance that game management belongs to Wash.
Personnel? That’s on Nolan. If Donuts comes up with a trade, we’ve been told by the owner of the team that it has to be run by Nolan before it gets approved.
There weren’t too many people (me included) in here that was on board with Andruw Jones being a Ranger but AJM made it very clear in March this was Nolan’s baby (along with Wash & Rudy).

Weren’t the reports saying that Nolan wanted Wash gone last year but JD said he wanted to keep him? To me, that seems like a good bit of teamwork between the two since if Nolan was the clear decider on personnel, then why would he listen to JD?

michael young
is a leader of the rangers like tony romo is the leader of the cowboys
they are leader in name only — and while FOTF may be a quiet leader, hes not one that has been very vocal other than with what, the CJ wilson “douchebag” comment (which, for what its worth i think its pretty damn true)
i would def say that kinsler is way more of a leader of the team than young…and his actions in the offseason show that hes anything but a leader. basically he said fuck the team, i like being the SS and if you dont want me there trade me — great leadership. way to show those young players how to do it
michael young is a player that i lost a lot of respect for when he got so upset about moving to another position, and the fact that the move worked out almost perfectly for the rangers so far shouldnt be overlooked (werent you the one that was mad the rangers demanded he move positions instead of asking him politely to change?)
elvis may not be the MVP right now, but he is the posterboy for the rangers “changes” this year.
the fact of the matter is that the rangers (and anyone who looked any futher than skin deep at his defense) realized that young is a VERY overrated SS but has the tools that could and probably will transfer to 3B very well. if your looking to get your best players on the field, then whats wrong with the change they made? the black hole that was 3b last year is now plugged with a solid player (defense will come around i think), SS is now in better shape than last year…so how is it a bad thing for the rangers now or in the future?
i would agree with you 100% about him being a leader had he not demanded a trade and threw a hissy fit about moving to 3B…but that is bush league….so if the rangers trade feliz for say, chase utley (obv not gonna happen) and kinsler has to move to the OF, is it ok for him to bitch and moan about it and demand a trade?
what is any different than his situation and sori’s? other than the fact that he realized sooner than later he better move…both complained, and sori got BLASTED for not wanting to move, but you are willing to defend FOTF in almost the same situation?
come on — yes, FOTF has been a plus on offense.he also has a LONGLONGLONG way to go on defense, think of him as the reverse chris davis…if you want him to be benched for his horrible offense, then it shuold be the same for FOTF’s horrible defense — because as bad as davis has been with the bat this year, thast almost equally how bad young has been with the glove (difference is that FOTF has been one of the 5 worst defensive players in BASEBALL while davis is one of the 5 worst 1B offensive players in baseball)

Given Young's track record with the organization
and JD’s track record with the organization plus the fact that Young is one of the more universally respected figures throughout MLB, I don’t think Young’s teammates had a problem with him back in January.
Factor in how Young has not pouted once spring training began, personally kept this thing from dying in April and is having one of his better years at the plate while learning one of the more difficult positions in the game, I’d say Young still has a lot of street cred in the room and throughout MLB.

I don't understand this.
Why would he trust Galloway more than Evan Grant, Jeff Wilson, Richard Durrett, etc.? Galloway isn’t at every game, and doesn’t have a personal relationship with these guys, whereas the others are all beat writers who give the team their due on a daily basis.
I’m also curious as to how you know he trusts only Galloway.

There must be only one explanation
For Nolan’s appearances on Galloway’s show: that he trusts Galloway more than anyone else in the D-FW sports media.
JW, did you ever think that there could be other factors in play as well? Such as the fact that, for better or worse, Galloway is one of the more recognizable names in the media and has one of the more famous local sports radio shows, so that appearing on his show is an efficient way to speak to a sizeable contingent of Rangers fans?

Galloway typically does throw Donuts under the bus
but he actually wrote a complimentary column on the Tex Trade when the Yankees were in town.
I have never seen Jamey write anything that could be construed as criticism of Donuts or Hicks.
Wasn’t it 10 days ago or so (whenever Hicks announced the team was for sale) that Jamey wrote a very glowing assessment of Tom Hicks and his ownership of the team?
Nevermind that just last month an unbiased source like CNNSI ranked Hicks as the second worst owner in MLB.

After literally everyone in America has lauded the trade, many calling it the best trade in a few years, the last decade, etc., and after Baseball Prospectus praised it as a truly legendary franchise-altering trade, Galloway decides to hop on the bandwagon and write a “complimentary column.”

Actually
AG is a franchise altering player, he’s almost in the same class as Pujols. SD is so bad, he’s a drop in the Pacific Ocean. However, he keeps the team with Peavy on the edge or respectibilty. The main problem with SD is the 40 million payroll, and the bad management.
by SanDiegoKev on Jun 8, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Don't disagree with AG's quality or SD's problems
But that doesn’t make it a franchise-altering trade. A franchise altering trade changes the course of a franchise’s direction in one fell swoop.
The Teixeira trade did just that: the Rangers went from a bad farm system with a good first baseman to a great farm system with five prospects, four of whom were BA 100 guys and potentially big league starters, one of them a top five pitching prospect and potential ace.
The AG trade is akin to the Bagwell/Larry Andersen trade: it helped one team more than the other, but it didn’t change either franchise’s course of direction.

AG for Salty/Andrus/Harrison
I’d be surprised if San Diego makes that deal. They’d consider it for a few seconds, but I don’t think it is as foregone a conclusion as you think. To get AGon, you’d need the 2009 versions Salty, Elvis, Feliz and Harrison. Which the Braves would never have given up for Tex.
Adrian Gonzalez is FAR AND AWAY the best player in that deal. Anyone who calls it the “Chris Young” deal is not in touch with reality. You could make an argument right now that Adrian Gonzalez is one of the top three or four most valuable players in baseball right now.

why would you be suprised?
they have huge holes at SS and C
they have kyle blanks at 1b
i think they def think about it (it comes down to how much value AG has to them from a marketing viewpoint imho)
i think they would take the 2008 versions of all of the players involved — they would most def do the same deal in a heartbeat (the teix deal) for the same reasons we did
they are not going anywhere this year, they have no farm system to speak of and may move peavy and AG at the deadline

Gonzalez
Is among guys like Pujols in value. I’m pretty sure the Teixeira package isn’t sufficient to get him from the Padres.
The Padres may consider trading Gonzalez to fill some holes, but I’m thinking they’be calling Baltimore for Wieters and Matusz before they’re talking to the Rangers about a catcher for whom it has yet to click, a lefty pitcher with a limited ceiling (as much as I like him), a high ceiling, may or may not develop righty, and a defensive whiz, low power SS.

Based on one immediate reaction. Unless you are a clubhouse attendant you don’t know what transpires there. MY is distinct because he generally never overreacts, so when he does, it’s “news”. He is far, far from just a figurative leader.

I agree somewhat
but not entirely. Young’s actions were childish, but he manned up and did what was right in the end. And we still don’t know for sure how the whole thing ended up being fought in the newspapers.
Leader does not mean “best player.” It basically means the guy who is going to go out and face the world and represent the team to the public after successes and after disappointments. Young, being the senior veteran on this club, having been around longer than anyone else, has that role. Especially with the national media, where he is generally hailed as being the best Ranger.
This may be the case that because most of us are so familiar with the Rangers and know all of their warts and flaws that we like to think of Kinsler and Hamilton as the keys to the club, and thus in our minds they’re the “leaders”. But with the interaction to the media, it seems to be Young. And what actually goes on in that clubhouse we have no idea.

1. Would it not be great to have MLB disclose their umpire grades?
2. How cool is it that Andrus is a much better hitter than we thought and even a better defender than we expected?
3. The Angels bullpen will be the Achilles heel of that team.
4. Murphy’s resurgence since his disastrous opening is totally remarkable.
5. Ian’s defense is amazingly better this year.
6. Totally impressed with the Mathis performance a couple of days ago.

I just wish
there was a way to ignore all the subthreads Josey posts in. I am already blocking Josey but scrolling past the endless arguments is getting really old, especially if I’m sitting in the thread for a while and people KEEP REPLYING.

Not sure what the problem is, lisa
The Rangers are winning and we’re just kicking around who should get the credit.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

You really DO think Ptolemy was right, don't you???
you at the forum center, with everything revolving around you.
Some days it’s annoying as hell, but some days it IS just priceless.

Or pretty much the entire comments section altogether :D
It only really bugs when I’m sitting in a thread for a while (like the GDT) – and then only because people keep replying, so hitting “z” brings me right back back to the same subthread – over, and over, and over again :P
