are we docking him for time missed?

his offensive numbers are probably better than young’s and his defense is much better.

and he’s arod and it’s the all star game.

According to Fangraphs, again...

A-Rod’s WAR is 0.9 right now, compared to Young’s 1.3.

Granted, he’s caught up fast, but Young is still a bit better off right now.

by jwiscarson on Jun 8, 2009 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He does have a .947 OPS

But he hasn’t been anything special since returning. I think Young has earned the nod over him as of right now, assuming Longoria is the one voted in.

Inge has been much better than Face.

Figgins and Crede have been better (or at least right around as good, depending on your metric of choice), too.

I’d prolly put Arod above him for the All-Star game cause he’s Arod. I think by the time July rolls around Alex’ll’ve caught Face anyhow.

So, yah.

Face shouldn’t be an All-Star at 3b this year.

But that doesn’t mean the explosion with the bat isn’t nice. It’s been awesome.

Chris Davis will be fine. Relax.

do coaches vote him in?

because he’s Face, and has been there so much in the past several years? or do they like ARod over him?

How has Inge been "much better" than Young?

Just doing some casual research, Young is sitting on a 140 OPS+ compared to Inge’s 127. His OPS is significantly higher. Figgins and Crede haven’t even been close from an offensive standpoint. ARod, while being the better player, is currently winning the OPS battle because of bloated walk numbers. His 150 pt spread between batting average and OBP is significantly higher than normal. Young’s wRC is significantly higher than ARod’s, Inge’s, or Crede’s and is second to only Longoria.

I guess you are looking at the value stats on fangraphs to reach your conclusion, which I think is skewed presently because of Young’s newness to playing third base. I’m much more receptive to some of the saber defensive stats, but watching 90% of the games this year, I’m really at a loss as to how Young could be rated so badly by UZR. Either way, I can’t remember the last time an offensive player was included on the all star roster because of his defense. For better or worse, entrance into the game is dictated by offensive prowess. As such, Young has been the 2nd best third baseman in the league thus far. That should get him a trip to the game.

the Yankee fans will vote ARod in

Longoria will be the Rays rep. MY will get in more as an infielder than a thirdbaseman.

bottom line is his career .705 ops

his offense is going down.

sure his better defense may make him as good/better than young so far, but noone voting on the all star game really cares about defense. and those that do think young is a gold glove SS playing 3rd and thus good defensively, they arn’t looking at UZR.

I think young will be ahead of inge in any player/manager voting and is in the fan voting. Of course, theres arod. Young will probably need an injury to make it.

Nevertheless, your sentiment above isn't that far off...

Fangraphs lists Longoria, Inge, and Figgins above Mikey in terms of overall value.

If he were average on defense, he’d have third easily.

players vote for one of the backups, right?

Say Longoria gets voted in. Who do the players vote in from the following list:

Young, Inge, ARod.

I can’t see the players voting in Inge, regardless of his stats. Do the players vote Young, who is generally respected, or ARod, who is supposedly derided around the league but obviously the better player? I don’t know.

Even better than 2005

right now, a wOBA of .400 (.389 in 2005) and on pace for about 55-60 doubles and 20+ HRs. Pretty nice. Helps make up for league-worst defense at 3B. This looks like a “bump” year in the midst of his decline phase and some of what we were missing when he wasn’t healthy. Hope he keeps it up.

Currently 4th on the team in terms of value (according to fangraphs) after Cruz, Kinsler, Andrus.

And I will never accept that

His normal range is less than a lot of other players. However he makes the occasional play you wouldn’t expect from an accumulative measurements point of view. I hope someday the big contract, dislodging Cat, and not being a 170 OPS+ type will be digested and dealt with. And FWIW, he won’t decline offensively as much as some trendlines suggest. But in the absence of other aspects of the Rangers to criticize, have at it. I think he can handle it, with aplomb.

Young has really stepped up this year

There is a lot of Young hatred around here, mostly because he has a ridiculously large contract, his offseason antics, and the fact he’s generally overrated.

But that shouldn’t take away from the fact that he’s been an integral part of this team so far. His playing a passable 3b has allowed Elvis (obviously the brightest thing about the 2009 Rangers) to play SS. His defense, while not good, has been better than what the team would have had at 3b otherwise and has let Elvis do his thing at SS. His offense has been above anyone’s wildest expectation. Anyone predicting a .380 OBP and .541 SLG pre-season would have been ridiculed (by me too) as being a Young homer. Between Hammy being injured and slumping, Kinsler and Blalock being notoriously streaky, and Davis not showing up this year; it’s easy to say that Young has kept this offense together this year.

Defense

It will be interesting to see how Young finishes statistically on defense. It would be encouraging if he improves as he gets more and more acclimated to the position.

by bflood36 on Jun 8, 2009 2:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Young

He’ll probably improve defensively, but regress offensively. That’s my guess anyway. I think most people figured he was going to have a difficult time transitioning to third base, given that he didn’t have much time to prepare for the move. I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t be an average third baseman eventually.

I think it already has?

If I remember right, his UZR/150 has gone from like -40 in early-May down to -30 now in early June.

Could be SSS variance, or it could be he was really really bad to start (so the projection suggested -40 over the year) and has only been bad recently, and bucked the trend to produce -30.

But my point is, that while he is still accumulating negative runs, he’s accumulating them slower than before.

Please correct me if I’m misunderstanding the use of those stats.

by Trickman on Jun 8, 2009 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Looking through some old posts

Young in the middle of May was worth -7 runs defensively. Through the end of May, his UZR was at -7.9 with a UZR/150 of -29.5. Right now he’s at -7.7 runs there and a UZR/150 of -21.5. It still looks awful, but he is showing some slight improvement statistically. Even more importantly, if he can just keep it at -7.7 runs, that’s a huge gain as the season has gone on, going from -30 runs per 150 games to only -7.7. And compared to last season, that’s also a massive improvement.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

A very dumb question about defensive stats (which I don't know anything about)

Of the measures that look at balls fielded/not fielded by certain players, do they take into account neighboring players? Say Young plays closer to the line because Andrus has giant range. Young gets fewer balls in the hole for that reason. I doubt this knocks down Young’s fielding numbers. How is that corrected for?

Go Rice Owls!

by JBImaknee on Jun 8, 2009 2:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

IIRC

It doesn’t go against Young, but goes towards Andrus. In the end though, Young wouldn’t be worth as many runs if Andrus range overlaps into Young’s zone, but for this case specifically, I’m guessing Andrus’ range just helps Young’s lack of range hurt him as much.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Someone wrote about this...

In relation to Chase Utley and Ryan Howard.

UZR gives +/- points to different zones, and thus if Young played closer to the line, he should get a higher + from that zone and a higher – from the zone that he can no longer reach.

If Andrus can then cover that zone, Andrus would get some + from that zone, cancelling out the run lost by Young.

That’s how I’ve read the statistic.

by Trickman on Jun 8, 2009 2:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

UZR

doesn’t account for positioning. and people are putting way too much stock into Young’s ratings at third 2 months into the season.

except Young’s ratings so far are very much in line with the rest of his career. I expect him to be closer to an average 3B by the end of the year, even if the UZR numbers don’t seem to say so. Some combo of UZR, +/- and other metrics will probably give us a good idea by the end of the year.

what is FOTF's +/-

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Scout to KG: On Sandoval: "Man, that fat [expletive]-er can hit."

re FOTF defense

from offseason:
john dewain:

Young cost the Rangers five runs at shortstop last year, which was actually his best year in the last three. If Andrus and Vizquel can save five to ten Defensive Runs, that will be an increase of 10 to 15 Defensive Runs Saved at shortstop. And if Young can play an average third base, that will be a gain of 26 Defensive Runs Saved at third. Altogether, this move could result in 36 to 41 Defensive Runs Saved for Texas..

Using the rule of thumb that 10 runs equals one win, that’s a possible increase of four wins on defense alone.

Unfortunately

UZR/150 says he is on pace to cost them 21.5 Runs. So he will save only 4.5 runs.

Hopefully he improves dramatically the rest of the season.

You MAY have mentioned that...

but there’s no way he’s top 5…… Manny and Carlos Lee alone mean he only has to outplay 3 guys.

You're about to get flamed.

Your reference to MY’s GG will undoubtedly lead to a huge line of posts about how shitty MY was as a SS and how silly the basis for awarding GGs really is, supported by an avalanche of defensive statistical data. Be prepared to have your intelligence roundly criticized.

Also, and I’m one of the biggest MY homers on this board, he handled the move to 3rd like a world class douche. Since moving over, however, he’s busted his ass to be a good player there.

MY has been huge this year...

whether or not you like him, like the way he acted earlier this year, his contract, et al. The guy has produced so far and you can’t take that away form him.
