Well
Now we don’t have to worry about Holland leaving the rotation.
I’m not as bothered about this, given the way Milly and Feldman have been anchoring things thus far. Just keep throwing Holland and Harrison out there.

I think this bullpen is one real arm from being pretty damn good anyways, assuming Frankie gets healthy…
With O’Day, CJ, and Frankie, they’re in good shape late in games… Jennings has been pretty good, too… Add someone like Jose Valverde and we’re looking at a bullpen that can pretty much shut things down… 5 good bullpen arms would set this team up pretty nicely, even if the starting pitching regresses some…

Do you really think Glavine
after 22 seasons in the National League East is going to switch leagues and go pitch in what is widely considered (regardless of how accurate an assumption) one of the worst parks to pitch in? For what will likely be his final season in the big leauges? When he now desperately wants to prove that the Braves were wrong in saying he can’t get batters out anymore?
Now, I think Glavine could probably do pretty well in Texas, given that the Ballpark is typically better for lefties than for righties, that the AL West is pretty week offensively, and he’d get a shot at the postseason.
But it won’t happen. Guys like Glavine just don’t switch leagues and contexts in their last season.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
by Josey Wales on Jun 8, 2009 5:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's not a broken bone.
Stress fractures are tiny cracks that hurt like hell. They heal pretty fast when you don’t agitate them. Two to three weeks of rest. Then probably a two or three start rehab stint. I’d guess about 5 weeks.
by NoNameOnCard on Jun 8, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
do you think he comes back into the rotation?

by ab03 on Jun 8, 2009 5:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Probably.
As long as he keeps pitching, the healed bone will be stronger than before. The bone will weaken with too much rest (akin to atrophy in a muscle, kind of like osteoporosis).
The big question is where in the scapula the injury is. The only other reported scapula stress fracture in a pitcher was on the lateral border near the attachment of of the teres minor muscle (a rotator cuff muscle used for external rotation). I assume (potentially incorrectly) that this is where McCarthy’s injury is.
The plus side is that this means his rotator cuff is stronger than his bones.
The study doesn’t name the pitcher, but I believe it was Kris Benson. Irony, I guess.

Is it just bad luck for him to have the same injury, one that is not at all common for pitchers, or is something about the anatomy of his shoulder predispose him to this type injury?

Quirk in his follow-through.
Perhaps a diet too low in calcium. The theory I have is based on what I know from the only other reported case of a scapula stress fracture in a pitcher. McCarthy’s case might be different.
In the case I read, the prevailing theory was that the attachment of the teres minor muscle caused the stress fracture. This muscle is used maximally right after the throw to slow down the arm’s internal rotation.
The idea is that the tendon pulls harder on the bone than the bone can withstand.
Either his curveball is the cause, or his bone has weakened since the previous stress fracture.
It’s also possible that he’s just stronger than the last time this happened – like if the bone didn’t get weaker, but his teres minor got stronger.
by NoNameOnCard on Jun 8, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
so, going forward
his delivery is going to have to be reworked, or he is always going to be susceptible to this same injury?

by tricer on Jun 8, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hard to say without knowing the exact mechanism of injury.
He’d probably be better off re-working some of his core action. I think scap loading may have played a role in this.
I’m going to start working on an article that summarizes my thoughts, not sure if it will go to BBTiA or TexasLeaguers… kind of a coin flip. If it’s too technical, I’ll TL it.
by NoNameOnCard on Jun 8, 2009 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Potentially, but not likely.
The problem is a comparatively weak bone; that’s how stress fractures happen.
Calcium would help strengthen the bone, but we don’t know how much he already consumers or if increased bone strength would totally fix the issue.

Do you think Daniels is simply being conservative
when he tells the local press that McCarthy won’t pick up a ball for several weeks?
by Snark on Jun 8, 2009 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
"Several" is probably an overstatement.
Not touching a ball is probably a good idea. Several weeks would probably push it a little far. They might play it super cautious here, so there’s no telling how long he’ll really be out.
My guess above was 2-3 weeks for the stress fracture to heal, then 2-3 rehab starts. If they wait 4 weeks, he might need to rebuild some strength before going on a rehab assignment.

There was nothing wrong withe the "Healthy" BMac as a starter this year.
Hey was your 4-5 starter and was fine as your 4-5 starter. No one said he was a TORP this year. We all hoped and expected him to be when the trade happened, but he was fine as our 5th starter. But yes, he should have been a starter to begin the year, when he was healthy.

What the hell does it matter if the best he can do is make 12 starts before getting hurt?

Those are 12 starts you don't have to worry about someone like Benson making.

He has one us 5 games.
And of the 5 that were no decisions, 3 were wins. Thats 8 games where he wither pitched very solid for the win or good enough to keep us in the game. Do you think the likes of Benson could/would have done that???

And we would have been much better off realizing
he didn’t have it in him to ever be a starter who could take the ball every 5th day and put him in the bully.
Donuts would have had to swallow hard and publicly admit he screwed the pooch in dealing Danks but it would have been the best use of this resource.

And Benson being in the rotation
over that same time would have helped us more than McCarthy.

I wasn't rooting for McCarthy to get hurt.
I just think he was miscast as a starter in The Show and that his body was rejecting the notion he could ever do it.
I always thought he should be in the bully. He’d never be great or ever measure up to John Danks but I considered him to be still useful.

Not to sound harsh, but this really isn’t so bad. Jerking Holland between the pen and the rotation was never a good idea and this nips that practice in the bud. Now Holland actually has a few months of consistent rotation time to work with.
McCarthy would be decent in the pen too IMO.

If that's the case...
the Rangers may as well just cut bait with him now. A pitcher who throws high 80’s with an occasional changeup isn’t going to be a decent starter. McCarthy needs that curveball.

Good Lord
You see pitchers who have several injury plagued seasons and go on to good careers, while others never get out of the trainers room. One more year of this and it’s walking papers for McCarthy. I was furious the day Danks was traded for this guy but had hopes for him. It now looks like he simply doesn’t have the physical resilience to be a big league pitcher. At least White Sox fans are happy.

That was what pissed me off. Danks had good minor league numbers, but all we heard was DVD and how it was the future of the Rangers, then they traded the best of it away for a guy who couldn’t even keep his spot in the, albeit championship, rotation.

Well, on the bright side
Holland gets to stay in the rotation, where he needs to be.
The downside is, we’ve just lost the rotations third-best tRA+. Although, ironically enough, Hollands three starts have been worth an 82 tRA+, actually higher than McCarthy’s 79.
