Houston area Ranger fans - need help
I recently moved back to Houston and close on a house in two weeks. I have lived in cities outside of the blackout area for the last 6 years so I've always just gotten extra innings with my cable provider (Comcast).
I know that won't work here. So I am exploring the best options for good HD cable/dish that also allow me to watch the Rangers on a regular basis. The rental I'm in right now has comcast and I only get Ranger games when the Astros are off.
I'm pretty sure that Adam is a Directv guy, but are there other services like Dish Network or Att Uverse that offer the same amount of Ranger games and provide either cheaper or better (or both) service than Directv?
The Basics of what I'm looking for in order:
Ranger games (as many as possible)
HD content
DVR service
Cost
Internet - how do you folks using satellite manage internet?
Any help is greatly appreciated from those that actually have the service from these companies. Honestly their websites aren't exactly helping me get the exact information I'm looking for and calling them is no better than me digging around on the net.
Thanks.

I live in Austin but had a similar situation
Earlier in the year when the Rangers games were not being televised much (they are now), I looked into direcTV and it seemed like the cheapest and best option. I could have gotten the 3rd tier package that has all of the fox sports channels and a few others that carry other teams games for the same price that I pay for time warner cable. However, my apartment does not face south, so a dish would not work.

i used to be on DirecTV in Houston
now I’m on ATT U-Verse.
The advantage that DirecTV has over ATT is that you got the KDFI games that aren’t on FSSW. You get all of the FSSW games on ATT (like DirecTV).
The advantage that ATT has over DirecTV is that the DVR is much better (more hours from what I can tell but you can obviously record 4 things at once).
They are similar in cost…ATT might be a few dollars cheaper for a comparable package.
I get my internet through ATT (always have…even when I was on DirecTV). I’ve never had satellite internet.
I don’t have an HD TV so I can’t help you there.

FSSW on ATT
Good to know. The ATT website shows that they get alternate Dallas feeds for FSSW but when I went to TVguide.com to cross check it didn’t show those channels at all for the zip I’m moving into.
Thanks for the response.

Dish Network vs. DirecTV
In my experience, the 2 satellite companies tend to be comparable in terms of technology and price. Dish puts all of the costs up front, so it looks a little more expensive, but DirecTV gets to the same figure by time you pay extra for HD, extra receivers, etc. Dish has a cool DVR that lets you watch programs that you’ve recorded in any room. This system breaks down, though, when you are trying to record a couple of things and still want to be watching something else. Although you have to watch the program on the TV with the DVR, I think DirecTV is probably better. Also, DirecTV has the MLB channel, which is pretty good.

ATT Uverse
I am in Spring and have ATT Uverse. I think you have to get the ‘sports package’ to get all the FSSW Rangers games, but it is only $10/month or something. I have no way of seeing games that are not on FSSW. Also use ATT for internet. My introductory price just expired, but I did get TV/Internet for $102 I think. Now it is $130.

neat
I also live in Spring and my friend’s house I’m moving into has ATT U-verse. I have noticed I can get the alt feed for FSSW Rangers games on the tv, but figured there was some catch (the ‘sports package’). I knew it couldn’t just be included in it. It sure will beat the hell outta the craptastic Charter Communications suckass cable I’ve been dealing with for the past 4 years though, which is almost as much a month as your price.

I had Charter too.
Ended poorly with a BBB dispute filed by me. I hate those peckerheads.
I’d say I get about 90% of the games and there is a bar with the MLB package about 2 miles from my house. I think I have missed only 2-3 games this year.

The Stadium.
2920 at I 45. Don’t like going there at night much (too old for that), but I watched opening day there. Cheap beer and lots of TV’s.

Hey BT
loved Portland. Really tough decision to “come home” but it just made sense. I’m in energy and this is obviously the epicenter.
The deciding factor was family. My parents are in Dallas and my wife’s family are in Houston and New Orleans. Getting them to Portland was tough and we’d see each of them just once or twice a year. With two little kids that was tough on us all.
Not too mention that I’d spend a good amount of vacation time just seeing family. Love them and all but that isn’t exactly a vacation. Hell, it’s more work some times.
Portland is a great town though and we miss it a lot. Especially this time of year. You still up in VA.?

Yeah
Still out here, still miss San Diego, but I do enjoy the East Coast (except for weeknight baseball start times).

Oh man, I wish I could say it wasn’t the same for me.
