T.R. Sullivan: Rangers claim Jason Grilli
Colorado had designated him for assignment. Jason Grilli wasn't terrible the past couple of years with the Rockies but was so far this year. Will be interesting to see how this plays out with the other pitching machinations.
Update: The accomanying moves are that Kris Benson has been outrighted to OKC, so that is a straight swap, both 25 and 40. Brandon McCarthy is officially DLed, and Guillermo Moscoso has been called up to replace him on the 25 man roster.

Has anyone seen what this does for the rotation?
With McCarthy out does Holland still go to the bullpen? Is Benson’s time with the Rangers done? Just seeing if anyone has heard anything

The local report that broke the Jason Grilli story now says that Texas didn’t claim him off waivers, but instead sent cash considerations to the Rockies for the righthander (meaning before Colorado ever placed him on waivers during the 10-day period that triggered on Friday).

However
if you look at it from a big picture view, its not too bad.
This team had 3 NRI pitchers, and a waiver wire pickup. Guardado, Benson, Jennings, and O’Day. Off the scrap heap they got 3 usable pitchers, now that Eddie seems to be on track.
I’m willing to bet that batting average is as good as our record getting pitchers from other sources.

You throw in Jones and Vizquel, and that’s 20% of the active roster that JD has picked up as free talent this year. That’s pretty good.

I can handle a guy sucking for a part of a year and then getting released more than I can handle a guy sucking on the roster for years at a time.

yeah
The Bensons and Jennings’s of the world are guys who you shouldn’t expect even a 50% success rate on. I’m fine with taking a risk on the guys like Benson so long as it doesn’t mean DFA’ing promising players.
The key is cutting bait on the ones who flop before they cause too much damage. Guardado showed that April is too early to cut guys for starting a little cold. Once into June it really is just a matter for doing it when the first roster crunch hits.

Yep,
as long as the team is willing to bench their NRIs, and cut them when they need to be cut, it can save quite a few millions over the Free Agent market, and that money can be plowed into the farm.

I wouldn’t say they are fails. They cost absolutely nothing.
Had they been on the ML roster and cost us games, I’d have called them fails.

I still think NRIs, if used properly, are basicly free talent.
and I will never understand some of the wailing and gnashing of teeth that goes over NRI acquisitions.
The only way NRIs can hurt the team, is if management doesn’t know how to cut bait, and thats another problem altogether.

Every team signs a dozen journeymen and gives them NRIs to ST
to even get a couple of guys to contribute is a good thing. This has turned out to be a strength of JD’s, and one we should be glad that he has.
Sammy Sosa so traumatized a certain segment of Rangers fandom (over Jason “i couldn’t even hit Kris Benson” Botts of all people) that anytime any old guy is brought in people are crying foul. It’s getting annoying.

So I take it Madrigal will go down when Harrison comes up and mathis will slide into the longman role. Wonder if this means Nippert isn’t coming back anytime soon?

Another NMLR update
According to local reports, Texas has outrighted Kris Benson off the roster
to make room for Jason Grilli. Benson reportedly hasn’t indicated whether
he’ll accept an assignment to Oklahoma City.
Also, the club placed Brandon McCarthy on the disabled list and recalled
Guillermo Moscoso from AAA. That could be a temporary move to give the
bullpen an added arm until Matt Harrison is activated (possibly to make
Thursday’s start).

don’t let the door hit you in the ass
by texasraider on Jun 9, 2009 4:04 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Per Richard Durrett
I emailed Andrew Fisher, known as Poseidon’s Fist on the unofficial Rockies fans site Purple Row, and asked about his thoughts on Jason Grilli. Here’s what he had to say:
Man you guys just keep swooping up our players – Pedro Strop, Joe Koshansky, now Grilli.
Grilli throws a fastball that averages about 94 mph around two-thirds of the time and a 85ish mph slider about one-third of the time. He’ll mix in a change every once in a while, but he’s really a two-pitch pitcher. He was a phenomenal pick-up from Detroit last season, developing into a solid 7th-inning reliever. We were really counting on him to do the same this season, especially when Taylor Buchholz hit the DL.
I unfortunately always seemed to miss his appearances in the last two weeks, so I can’t say anything too specifically. His slide began in Pittsburgh mid-May – that series was abysmal all the way around, and confidence was completely absent throughout the roster. From that point forward, the whole team was practically waiting for Hurdle to get the axe. I say this because Grilli has a reputation for having confidence issues. He was nicknamed “Gas Can” in Detroit and was chastized openly by Tiger fans. He was dominant on the road for them but struggled in front of the home crowd.
I really think it’s a confidence issue with Grilli. He normally has solid control but walked at least one guy in each of his last five appearances. He was still very capable of earning a strikeout, with over a 10 K/9. Also of note, his FIP is only 4.10, which suggests his ERA should be significantly lower than what it is.
He could some hits on him and then struggled with control, and once that happened, he was in self-destruct mode. It appears he was elevating his pitches, because his groundballs went to nil and everyone started hitting flyballs and line drives off of him.
I’ve always liked Grilli, and I didn’t agree with the decision to let him go, as I’m sure he would have rebounded. He most assuredly deserves a spot in a big league bullpen, and he could definitely bounce back with a change of scenery to be the go-to-guy in the 7th.

What does DFA mean?
It means cutting bait. The guy pitched 8 innings last month. EIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! EIGHT of the most meaningless innings in the entire month. Having someone else do it wouldn’t have changed the course of those games. So what if Doug Mathis could have been up in May and pitched those 8 innings with an ERA in the 3’s we still would have lost those games and Mathis probably would be worse off by sitting so damn much.

It didn't cost us any depth.
Any time we needed to go deep in the pen in a blowout, we went with him. Any time we needed a fresh arm, we ran the OKC shuttle.
The only times I can recall us getting pinched and needed another arm in the pen was in late-game, higher-leverage situations when FF or CJ weren’t available, and nobody from the farm was going to help in those situations.

Yeah, Benson wasn't good
but he really cost the team nothing. In terms of money or games.
Tough to point to any improvement this team would have had without him. He was 1-1 in 2 starts, and generally only showed up in relief during blowouts. His one starting loss was in Detroit, and no one else was winning there.
Putting slugs like Benson in the rotation is the price you pay for having headcases like Padilla or china dolls like McCarthy in the rotation.

CJ?
He’s been outstanding, a borderline all-star.

He cost us more games than Benson has though

Didn't CJ help win a lot more games than Benson?

CJ isn't the 25th man on the roster.
Aren’t you just hoping that the 25th guy on your roster doesn’t cost you any games?

Other than that early game at Detroit
I can’t remember another game that he’s cost us.

I meant Benson
Other than his only start in Detroit. He hasn’t cost us another game.
I agree that CJ has cost us more.

Yep thats the only one I can see him actually costing us

Yeah, thats the only one
that comes to my mind too.
Considering how well our other results were in Detroit, I’m not confident our other starters would have faired any better. For whatever reason, we get owned in Detroit.

I got ya. So acquiring O'Day entailed "so little risk"
but Benson?

Grilli is 32

I like it.
If grilli gets it going again its a great pickup, and worst case hes better than benson and we just cut him a month from now for someone else.
the preceding post was a great success.

You nailed it...
At this point it is worth taking a flyer on a guy and hope the change of teams puts a spark in him and maybe he pulls an “O’Day”.
