What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

i am very interested to hear

about his demands tomorrow. i doubt the rangers would have taken this kid unless they were pretty confident they could get him signed.

If they sign him of course

think they’ll do the mechanics twiddling like they did with C-Wun? Or they’ll just decide not to risk messing him up?

Just Curious...

I was just curious to know if the consensus is that Matt Purke was an easy choice despite the fact that Alex White was still on the board. What are everyone’s thoughts? (Note: I’m not criticizing. I’m just wondering.)

Been happy with either…

It's a pitcher.

This alone makes me happy.

Or...

…they decide to play chicken with Purke, save their pennies for Latin America, and take the comp pick when he doesn’t sign.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 9, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah

The more and more I think and the longer the negotiations will last I think this is gonna happen

Which isn’t such a bad thing since we would then be able to go out in next years free agent market and not worry about losing our 1st round pick

Yeah

This was my immediate thought.

by jthig32 on Jun 9, 2009 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Sign Him

I really think if they are going to balk at his demands they should not of picked him. Taken Alex White (probably slot sign) and still have money for supp. round or later picks

by peachygbc_1 on Jun 9, 2009 6:49 PM CDT up reply actions

According to the chat on BBTiA, Will Carroll just tweeted that we took Purke with the intention of not signing him.

Which seems ridiculous, but mildy interesting…

If it was intentional

Then I would have to look at the free agent class and see who we are gonna target thats a type A

That's wrong

according to Z, he actually said he heard that rumor but doesn’t believe it:

exactly what i was thinking

they drafted the hard to sign guy, if they sign him fine if not they get a comp pick.
but i think theres a really good chance they get a comp next year for purke

Can't complain...

about a lefty SP from Texas that represented good value at that pick.

Are we all draft, all the time

…in spite of the fact that the Rangers have made their only pick of the day?

only pick of the day?

not quite

Oh

I figured they’d stop at the first round and pick it up with the supplemental and second tomorrow. They don’t televise those?

by Black Francis on Jun 9, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

nope

They will go by very quick. Its a conference call basically

Signage trouble do'nt worry bout the arm!

Worry about signing him that is going to be the trouble he’s asking like 7 millon or round what rick porcello of those damn DET Tigers got! Definatly not worth that much!
Don’t worry about the arm he pronates really well off the release he also he has a really slight crossfire action which is OK. The relase is a bit below 3Quarters and good whip action he does not strain or struggle to throw it is very free and easy!
He could get hurt but he as no more chance than any other picther does!

Porcello

Since I bitched about us skipping on Porcello, I guess I can’t bitch if we grabbed Purke. Even though I see Purke more like a Left Handed Beavan than Porcello. Porcello had and has killer mechanics and confidence. He really is unique. Maybe more so than Stras! Yeah, I said it.

by 3Bagger on Jun 9, 2009 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

meh

we’ll see how it plays out but not really stoked about the pick. of course i have a hard time looking at the long term picture…

Strasbury

Not Drafted out of High School. Everyone needs to remember that fact. It says SOMETHING. I’m not sure what? But that seems like ZERO to 60 in a hurry. I’m skeptical Stras is worth more than Porcello.
