I'm with NoName. This is a pretty ugly wind-up.

Doesn’t hide the ball well, and the 180 degree forearm motion doesn’t look healthy

Most certainly the Rangers will try to manipulate this. My question is: how much?

Does it look like a complete overhaul? I fail to see how this wind-up works at the big-league level.

if Nolan called Purke's people before the draft

to get a read on what it would take to sign him, I gotta think they feel confident they could sign him.

Well I guess they could do what Will Carroll is saying, but I just don't find that likely

Why not just take a guy who wouldn’t be as expensive that you could sign instead of just not signing the guy and get a compensation pick next year?

That's my feeling too

You would think that unless Hicks is totally broke, they would have budgeted enough money for at least one over-slot pick. When they picked Purke, they had no idea that Scheppers would be there at 44, so if you don’t think you can sign Purke, they would probably have picked somebody else (like a Miller) who they felt was signable, particularly since there were a bunch of other good talents still available at the time.

Of course, picking Scheppers will make it a bit more difficult to sign Purke, but I think that the initial intentional was to sign Purke when they picked him.

I don't know

but picking him cost you an extra 2 million over picking somebody else at that spot, and I don’t know how much money they have

So, what did Will Carroll say?

Ah

Found it in Brett’s post below.

Yah I don’t believe that theory…Nolan’s connection with his representation just takes the legs right out from under it.

Purke vs. White

Certainly no complaints about Purke. Clearly a best available player type pick in spite of the likely contract demands. if they step up and sign him, great. That said Cleveland has gotten a lot of kudos for picking White with the very next pick. Would he have been a better pick for the Rangers at 14 than Purke? Why do you think the Rangers went for Purke over White?

by Dalman on Jun 9, 2009 10:47 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

There are drawbacks to White

despite his last start. He was pretty crummy down the stretch, and there are a lot of questions about whether he needs to go to the pen. All of that said, I would have been about as happy with him as with Purke, and you’d probably feel better about your chances of signing White and Scheppers.

To put this Will Carroll thing to bed

I went and actually looked at his comment on Twitter. He was misrepresented, at least 2nd or 3rd hand. Here are his comments:

I thought Miller. TEX takes Purke. Guess Liverpool isn’t hurting the draft.
Just heard theory that the Rangers signed Purke to not sign him. Don’t believe it for a second.

He also had some interesting comments on Scheppers over the course of the first round, nothing that jumps way out as definitive, though.

Carroll

I asked him what the motivation would be to pick and not sign a player, he responded and said:

“Can’t afford and can say demands are too high. Like I said, don’t believe.”

Hmm I swear

He said something different when I checked it yesterday, but it was late, who knows.

yeah I must have read it somewhere else

He definitely got misrepresented 2nd hand or whatever.

What about this angle on the draft

Hicks is trying to sell the club, he knows whoever buys the club, wont wanna be the guy who just spent 400M+ and not spend 8M to sign the top 2 picks. talk about a fanbase turning on a new owner, it would be kinda ugly. So hicks gets to look rich still, while still having every intention of selling the club. the club gets better dramatically than it would be otherwise, and the next owner isnt gonna let his 1st transaction to be to let the lefty from texas who throws 96mph go to the school 15 mins from your stadium…

I don't really care

If they sign the picks, I can’t care less how good Hicks gets out of it looking
