The word was that we were on him. Scouts galore at his latest starts.
I just had no idea we could get him at 44.
Kudos to Johnny Donuts.

Chris Davis will be fine. Relax.
Indeed
The Rangers were indeed in attendance. Along with a dozen other teams. The AL West was well represented.
"It takes a big dog to weigh 1000 pounds"
But...
Pittsburgh passed on him last year.
And 43 teams passed on him this year.
And McCarthy has talent and a shoulder injury.
McCarthy
lacks a 96 mph, running fastball.

That's not much of a reason
14 teams passed on Jered Weaver, who was the top player in his draft. 24 teams (or whatever it was) passed on Rick Porcello and Joba Chamberlain. Sometimes these types pan out and sometimes they don’t. But when they do you get a star.

Talent
I don’t disagree with that. Talent is certainly fun to consider, but injuries bug me.
Players with injuries make me cringe too much. For me, watching McCarthy pitch is like watching a toddler jumping rope holding steak knives. Something bad is about to happen sorta feeling. So, that’s were I stand.
Here is another way I look at it
Carroll said on Twitter that teams were scared to death that the Angels were going to snag Scheppers with one of their late first round picks. How do AL and ALW teams feel about Texas getting him in the second round? I’ll tell you how, their division rivals have a sick feeling in their gut.

I have a hard time believing the Fort Worth Cats passed on him without some sort of under the table agreement

Reminds me a lot of the Tommy Hunter selection.
Some real expensive guys in front of him, then go ahead and take a safe college guy who you know’ll sign quickly and for slot.
Fine with me.
If we sign Scheppers and Purke and Pimentel we might actually end up keeping that #1 overall farm system trophy another year.
What an awesome first two picks.
I literally screamed when I heard Scheppers’ name.
Awesome.

The philosophy does sort of make sense to me
Go for it near the top of the draft with guys that have a chance to be stars, then go a little safer later on when the difference between guys is likely to be a lot less in terms of potential and value.

Hey, this draft was big and explosive, not ham-fisted and cloying with cliched, one-dimensional characters at every turn.

Heh.
Yah. True dat.
Cuz “ham-fisted” and “Michael Bay” are 2 ships that nary have crossed in the night.
I like your use of cloying, though. That is a witheringly descriptive disparager that seems tailor-made for amateur film snobs like ourselves. Hope you don’t mind if I poach that, Tressa, when I’m big-braining some cinema rubes around the water cooler.
It’s funny, I work w/ a team of 8 in an office of much larger, and everybody in the team is pretty good friends, etc., and there is one guy who is known as the Anti-recommender. He’s bright, a great guy, articulate too, which makes the situation all the more befuddling and comical. You wouldn’t believe how many times he’s gotten a rasberry review on his “big big recommendations.” Now we just politely pretend to listen.

I don't think Micheal Bay is self aware enough to overdirect a movie.
He’s pretty terrible, though.
He and his spiritual protege McG are the epitome of the all-flash no-substance, glossy music video-esque film culture that needs to go away and never ever come back again.
Plus he keeps trying to make Shia Labuff happen, which is actually a worse crime against humanity than the fact that MDB won an Oscar- there, I said it.
Shia Labuff is terrible and needs to die in an apartment fire, fucking pronto.
No good can come from him being alive.
Oh, and steal away. “Imitation is the sincerest form of...” and “If you can’t beat ’em…” and all that jazz.

ruined what could have been a good movie in Terminator Salvation. All flash no substance, the characters in their movies are the explosions and the people are special effects.

I still liked Terminator.
Do I like Terminators? Absolutely. Do I want to see Batman fight the killer robots? Yes. Not a very good movie, but I enjoyed it.
Top 10 Talent...
With an injury history. Just to be fair. So, he comes with riskssss.
I’m not trying to be a dick or anything. But, since someone will link-up this page in 2012, I want to go on record as saying, I was 100% for Shelby Miller. And we skipped over him. I think it was a mistake. He’s a man beast at 18, what will he be at 25? Purke is Left-Handed, and that’s helpful. I hope for the best. But, Miller was my #1 and it did not happen.
But
what does that have to do with Scheppers?

My first part, Is (Scheppers) Top 10 Talent? I don’t think so. Injury histories do matter to me.
The last part: I should have stated: OT.
Injury history is why he didn't get picked until 44
If he had no injury problems at all, do you think he would have been a top 10 pick?
he'd have been a top 5 pick, no?
a college guy who throws 96+ is not gonna last long
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
The pick has tons of intrigue. So, I like it in some respects.
But, I believe in the theory that says some people just simply GET HURT. Emmitt Smith was not one of those. Nolan Ryan was not one of those. Jamie Moyer. Randy Johnson.
So, I don’t believe in picking people who demonstrate a propensity to get hurt.
That said, he is an intriguing talent. And the Draft overall has been fun.

Scheppers
started pitching in college didn’t he? If it wasn’t for the slagging his arm took at the hands of the Fresno State staff, he’d be one of the lowest mileage arms in the draft in years.

Well said.
As a non-pitcher for most of his college career, his arm was not conditioned to withstand the workload he was given.

Jim: With Scheppers, when I was making my nonstop phone calls for first-round projections, I could see that coming. I think teams are leery of a shoulder injury. Not sure what he’s asking for financially, but I think it was more a healthy concern, not that there’s something horribly wrong right now, but just the history of being hurt. How about the Rangers getting Purke at 14 and Scheppers at 44? If those guys stay healthy and reach their ceilings, and you package them in a rotation with Holland and Feliz. Wow.
John: Jim real quick, first-round winners: My winners are Colorado, Texas and I’ll also say Minnesota and Cleveland, popping the Twins and Indians for getting White and Gibson so late in the first round.
Just for what it's worth
The talk surrounding Scheppers reminds me a lot of what was being said about Joba Chamberlain in his draft.

Now this kid's got to sign, right?
I mean, he COULD decide not to and go back to St. Paul, but that isn’t very likely…he can’t hold us hostage as much as Purke can, right? He’s as good as ours? If so, I guess I don’t get why he slipped so far…just injury issues?

Scheppers isn't likely to come back to St. Paul
And of interesting note Harrington pitched for the Saints as well. The Saints already have a full roster and had to move on from Sheppers quickly (he was released directly after his last start in game 1 of a doubleheader to make room for an additional bullpen arm).
Scheppers was a good fit for the Saints but he wasn’t really showcasing much other than power pitching. He threw mostly fastballs. The Saints radar gun, like everyone else, game him some extra umph on the fastball. Most of the radars indicated he was touching 98 but sitting mostly around 95 in his last start. It sounds like he’ll need some work on his other pitches in the minors (as do allpitchers not named Stephen Strassburg).

Harrington got his money.
Insurance policy.
Kid got terrible advice and followed it. I hesitate to call him an idiot for something that happened when he was 18 or 19, especially given the horrible advice he was given by his agents (espeicially Tanzer, who should be deported), but certainly it was a horrible decision in retrospect.
At least he was smart enough to take out a policy on his arm.

I don't know id anyone's posted this before
But as far as Purke goes, TR Sullivan has a quote up from Purke saying he wants to sign (and an obligatory Nolan Ryan tie in). We’ll see.
Alls I know is getting Scheppers makes me feel a lot better about whatever signability risk Purke might be.

One more thing...
As previously observed, Tyler Matzek seems like a douche.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
I'm sure this has been mentioned, but it's still really cool:
From Jim Callis talking about the draft as related to the top 100 prospect list:
San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg is already the favorite to rank No. 1 on next year’s Top 100. Assuming they sign, there are two more college players (North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley, Missouri righthander Kyle Gibson*), two independent league righthanders (Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers) and five high schoolers (outfielder Donavan Tate, lefthanders Tyler Matzek and Matthew Purke and righthanders Jacob Turner and Zack Wheeler) who are all but locks to make the list.
So, yah. Two guys added yesterday who are all but locks to make the top 100 list.
Awe.
Some.
