the Latin Wind

.310/.370/.420 in a tough league to hit in.

Where does he fit in as far as position player prospects?

Tip o’ the hat to dirkatron for his best nickname creation here as well (especially considering some of the duds he has thrown out there).

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

That's Paisano, right?

I keep hearing he’ll be lucky to be a 4th OF.

yes, Paisano

Before this season, I was thinking he’d be lucky to reach AA, so he’s moving in the right direction. Best defensive OF in the system and reportedly has plus 5 o’clock power, so there are tools there to work with.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Forgive my ignorance

but could you explain the “plus 5 o’clock power”?

batting practice power

Obviously it doesn’t mean a whole lot that he can hit a ton in BP, but I guess it does indicate that he’s not just some fast slap hitter, he actually has strength to go with his speed and arm strength.

Paisano

I think he stays in Hickory until August at least. Hes rule 5 eligible this winter and if we promote him too soon and he performs well in Bakersfield the chance of some team claiming him increases. Wait till August and let him have a months worth of ABs in Bakersfield and then next year he can split time between Bak and Frisco.

Next Year

I believe he’s rule 5 eligible after this season, though its not likely he’d get taken.

If he stays in Hickory or only spends a few weeks in Bakersfield I doubt he gets taken

But if he were to get promoted today and spend a couple months in Bakersfield I could see some NL team snatching him up and hiding him on their bench for a season. Use him as a late game defensive replacement and pinch runner

Also, his skillset does really seem to be suited to NL ball.

Evereth (sp?) Cabrera part deux maybe?

im not sure what kind of prospect Carbrera was, but i guess its a lot easier to stash a guy who plays great D at SS and 2B as a utility guy in the NL rather than an OF who probably needs to be able to pinch hit more. I dont think Paisano would be good enough to justify that unless you already know you definitely arent gonna be a playoff contender

I don't know all the NL rosters by heart

But if there is a team that has 3 or 4 good OFs they may take a chance on him and stick him as the 5th OF who can come in late in games as a defensive replacement or pinch run.

They don't need to worry

about the rule five draft when it comes to Paisano. It’s July 1. Even if he were promoted today and did pretty well for nine weeks in Bakersfield, he’s not going to get picked and stashed on anyone’s major league roster for a year. He’s not a good enough prospect for that to be worthwhile.

Id be shocked if he got taken

im not sure any team can justify stashing him on the roster for a full year

If he had a solid 2 month run in High A following a good first part of the season in Low A

I could see a team taking a chance on him. Hell in this economy for $25,000 its well worth it if you have a place for him.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jul 1, 2009 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not the 25k

It’s the roster spot. There will be much better options than Paisano out there if some team decided to stash a player. And these days no one’s doing that anyway.

Arlington, TX: home of The Blue Blur

by Brett Perryman on Jul 1, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

You don't think a team like Houston

Would pick him up and try and stash him on their bench for a season?

They have their starters in the OF set in Lee, Bourn, and Pence. I don’t know who their depth is but Paisano would be an ideal late game defensive replacement for Lee. Keep him up for a year and then send him back to the minors (which is barren of talent) and in a couple years after that maybe you have a player.

agreed

there are more advanced players that will be left off. Paisano getting picked in the Rule 5 draft would be shocking.

Wonder if he’ll just go a coupla innings before Moscoso takes over.

Namirez

His 5th inning bummed me out. I was hoping he could get thru the order the 2nd time clean and he just cratered in the 5th. A gift-out base-running error probably helped him complete the 5th rather than being yanked for Pimentel warming in the pen.

BTW, it’s amazing how many runs get scored in the low minors off of WPs and PBs with runners on 3B.
Guess it’s all part of the learning process.

Per Gdawg per Jamey

Duran claimed by Houston. I knew something was up as he should have cleared Monday afternoon or Tuesday at the latest. That really sucks (for those who still like him).

Looking at the current state of offense on the farm,

and I mean the whole system this side of Mike Bianucci, his 2007 was transcendant. And it just wasn’t that long ago.

I predict good things for German Duran.

by blalock84 on Jul 1, 2009 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

He might very well have next year

Arias has a questionable arm, Omar might retire, Vallejo hasn’t played SS in at least 2 years. I would think in fact that Duran couldve been the front-runner to replace Omar, if the club had faith in his SS skills. He has played: SS, 3B, 2B, LF. If Arias can’t play 3B due to his arm and they don’t trust to play Vallejo at SS then Duran might have been the super utility guy. They couldve also elected to keep 2 MIF as well….

by Goyogringo on Jul 1, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt our utility guy sees much action at SS next year

I think next year Elvis moves into the realm of kinsler and young as everyday players who play 155+ games a year in the field

You can doubt it all you want

but you need a competent and versatile guy in case of injury. Duran was the best candidate IMO. And if he found his power stroke again, gravy…

by Goyogringo on Jul 1, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

by versatile, do you mean

he can butcher it up at several different positions? I don’t really see him as being much of a defender, at all.

Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if has a career path similar to Esteban German. If so, it sucks that we gave him away.

Speaking of the discussion we were having

in the June 30 thread, Tim Alderson will be a fascinating study in the stats vs scouting debate. From Goldstein today:

One pitcher with numbers that are impossible to argue with is Giants righty Tim Alderson. After leading the California League in ERA during his full-season debut last year, the 20-year-old has a 2.36 ERA in his first nine Eastern League starts for Double-A Connecticut. Scouts still find it difficult to warm up to Alderson, however. “It’s not an insult at all, he’s a for-sure, big-league starting pitcher for me,” said one scout who saw him recently, “but it’s strictly back of the rotation for me,” he added, while explaining that Alderson’s backwards style of pitching is not one that is usually conducive to major league success. “That plus breaking ball is his calling card, and he’s a guy with plus-plus control and average command, but he can’t pitch off his fringy fastball, and you don’t really see many changeups out of him.”

There are lots of people who are still convinced that he’s every bit the prospect that guys like Bumgarner, Hanson, etc. are, but I don’t get the impression that many if any of those people have seen them pitch or would know what to make of it if they had. Either way, will be interesting to follow Alderson.

by Brett Perryman on Jul 1, 2009 2:24 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah you would think that

his success in AA bodes well but dominating with a plus plus BB could make his success there hard to translate to the bigs. Whatever the outcome turns out to be for the kid, I hope he is not as irritating to watch as Jennings…

The Cal League youtube viddy

of him pitching against Main and BAK … I was much more impressed with Main’s smooth delivery than that herky-jerky deceptive crap Alderson was featuring – even though the stats put Alderson laps ahead of Main.

Steven Murphy can COVER left field.
Kevin Richardson is just plain awesome.
And, like someone mentioned above, major points for the OKC relievers holding it down.
