Why C.J. Wilson drives me nuts!
Probably one of the most debated guys on the roster, C.J. Wilson blew his third game of the season last night. He's been "excellent" for the last 3-4 weeks though, right?
This is why he drives me nuts as a reliever. C.J.'s BAA with no outs and no one on is .345. Wow... With an 0-0 count, he has a BAA of .375. With a 1-0 count his BAA is also .375. With a 2-0 count his BAA is .600. On the road, C.J.'s BAA is .294
C.J. typically gets himself in trouble, and then gets himself out. His BAA's after 1 or 2 outs...or with RISP are pretty damn good.
In 2008: BAA with none on, none out: .311; BAA with 1 or 2 outs: .182. The reason he sucked last year is that he had a BAA of .328 with RISP.
In the last 20 games, when C.J either comes into the game in the middle of an inning OR when he leads off an inning, he has walked / HBP / given up a hit....to the first batter he faces 14 times.
Even though this year C.J. typically works out of the jam he puts himself in, watching him start off by putting a runner on is maddening.
I think this is the root of why people get frustrated with C.J....and that ends up magnifying his big mistakes like the one last night.

Its a stupid debte
CJ is a great relieve for this team and would be for any team. No he is not the best in the league, but he is damn good. He will have a few meltdowns a few times, but who doesnt? The all mightly frankie has even had a few of those.

Yeah...
I can’t stand CJ sometimes… but it’s impossible to put my finger on why. He’s a very solid guy overall. It’s his aloof smartest-guy-in-the-room attitude, I guess, that puts me off. When he blows one, it makes me say “See! He sucks! Something’s missing in between his f’ing ears!” But when I think rationally about it, there’s no complaint. He’s performed in enough high-leverage situations that I have no problem with him performance wise. You’re just going to have some nights like last night.

Blah blah blah
Wilson is constantly put in high leverage situations, so of course we’re going to have times when we’re very disappointed in him.

really?
he just pointed out that CJ from the windup sucks and repeatedly falls behind and you don’t think it is interesting?
you are such a dismissive homer sometimes

I don't know that it shows
he sucks from the windup. I think it might show he’s not as good against the first batter, but that doesn’t automatically equal trouble out of the windup. I’ll admit I’m just tired of CJ talk and I reflexively dismiss it.

yeah i jumped to multiple conclusions
but the stats are still worth pointing out. If nothing else, it could point to the fact that he really could be a shutdown closer but he’s possibly mentally failing by not buckling down for the first out.

could that possibly mean that he's not completely warmed up?
I’ve never really paid attention to his velocity against the first batter and subsequent batters but that might make sense if he struggles that bad against the first guy he faces.

That's kind of what I was thinking.
Maybe he just needs longer to get going, sometimes it’s hard to do that in the bullpen. Maybe they should find some way to simplify his warmup or get him up sooner or something.

I wouldn't classify T as a homer
I don’t think that’s a fair assessment.

My question about the use of relievers in general...
It seems that on most nights either a reliever has his stuff clicking, or is off, there’s not a whole lot of middle ground compared to starters. Why not as soon as a reliever shows signs of struggling (i.e. putting two men on base) take them out and put in the next guy hoping that they are on their A game that night. Sure you would use up more of your bullpen, but with the way our starters have been going I don’t think it would be a huge burden, plus you would avoid the 30-40 pitch inning from one reliever that leaves him unusable the next day. I would even follow this
philosophy for the closer, don’t wait for them to blow it, get someone in there that actually has their best stuff. And because walks especially piss me off especially in a crucial situation I would be all for a policy of pulling a guy after 1 walk. Just a thought.

That’s a big reason for why they are relievers.

Oh my.

he has put himself in the spotlight
his off-field actions make him a polarizing figure. his marketing contract with the team, the guitar hero event(s), blog posting here, the constant tweets (one received during the game although cj spent considerable time defending that it was not sent during the game and fwiw the time he spent defending the alleged non-game-sent tweet was hours before blowing the save), the myspace page… he’s out in the open, and this puts him in the spotlight. when he does well, people notice, but when he makes mistakes people notice more.
i’m old school in that i think the guys should fly under the radar (barry sanders not deion sanders). that said, i think we all loved us some deion when he was with the cowboys – hated him elsewhere and hated him more after he was done playing. the moral there – if you are going to put yourself in the spotlight, you need to play better than everyone else around you. when he doesn’t, he’s going to draw criticism.
