Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

Saturday a.m. Rangers things

Nice win last night.  Seattle 4 1/2 back again, Angels still a half-game back.

Jeff Wilson credits Scott Feldman with a quality performance yesterday, coming just one out short of making it through 7 innings.

Evan Grant credits Nelson Cruz with having a big game, despite the fact that he was supposedly to be benched for the fourth straight game.  Ron Washington says he's been playing the "hot hands," but refused to say whether Cruz's performance yesterday means he's hot enough to be included in there.  However, with lefties starting for Seattle today and tomorrow, I'd be very surprised if Cruz isn't starting both games.

Wilson also have some notes...Cruz has been named to the All Star Game as an injury replacement for Torii Hunter, Matt Purke and Tanner Scheppers aren't close to signing (although Jon Daniels says he expects both to sign), and Dustin Nippert will start on Sunday.

Neftali Feliz was going to pitch Friday, in an effort to get him used to pitching in back-to-back games, but because he may be starting in the Futures Game on Sunday, the Rangers opted to hold him out.

Kevin Sherrington runs down the best and worst for the Rangers in the first half of the season.

Richard Durrett suggests that, given how Jason Jennings has struggled with allowing inherited runners to score, the team may want to bring him in only to start an inning.  Although both inherited runners scored yesterday, it is hard to blame Jennings for it, given that he got two ground balls, allowing a bloop, opposite-field double, and then got another grounder.

Recidivism

Your behavior brings to mind one of my favorite dialogues from one of my favorite movies (raising arizona)

Parole Board chairman: They’ve got a name for people like you H.I. That name is called “recidivism.”
Parole Board member: Repeat offender!
Parole Board chairman: Not a pretty name, is it H.I.?
H.I.: No, sir. That’s one bonehead name, but that ain’t me any more.
Parole Board chairman: You’re not just telling us what we want to hear?
H.I.: No, sir, no way.
Parole Board member: ‘Cause we just want to hear the truth.
H.I.: Well, then I guess I am telling you what you want to hear.
Parole Board chairman: Boy, didn’t we just tell you not to do that?
H.I.: Yes, sir.
Parole Board chairman: Okay, then.

Unfortunately in your case it’s not that funny, so you should a) put down the bottle since it brings out the worst in you and b) figure out why you think that kinda humor is even acceptable, much less funny

But most of all quit bringing that shit into LSB. Makes us all look bad

What else does he have to do before Wash gets fully on board with the N-Train?

He’s as much of an everyday player as Ian and Josh at this point, imo.

If he’s getting worn down and needs a day off, fine. Guys need that now and then. Beyond that, PLAY YOUR BEST PLAYERS, WASHINGTON. Just do it. It’s not that hard.

Andruw Jones hitting 3 HRs in one game was a double-edged sword. I really enjoyed it, but also know that he’s not coming out anytime soon now. Nellie’s been really good all year and should be in there every game.

The problem with Jones is that 25 of his 40 base hits have been for extrabases. While that is good for his slg%, it is not good for his BA and OBP. Both continue to fall and are now about what they were before his 3 HR game.

AJ is 0-9 since hitting those 3 dingers, and despite having hit 7 dingers in his last 12 games he’s just 11 for 49 with 3 walks in those 12 games (.224/.269/.694).

Byrd is cooling off too, he’s 7 for his last 28, although he does have 4 walks to go with that, at least (.250/.353/.429).

AJ’s dinger-fest was cool, but he’s not doing anything worth ultimately snubbing our actual HR leader from lineup for, and Byrd is well… Byrd. He shouldn’t be keeping Cruz out of the lineup EVER.

because he gives him a few days off is ridiculous to me.

Cruz is still, even after the days off, 3rd in PA. I have no problem with giving a guy a few days off if he is in a little slump, especially since Nelly is going to the ASB.

Jennings

Ok Adam. I will reluctantly go along with you on Jennings last night. But the situation last night shows a glaring weakness in the bullpen. They don’t have someone who can come into a situation like that and get you a K. They only has a 4 run lead. Trading runs for outs is not preferable in that situation.

this is much is true

and has been said multiple times.

they basically need what frankie was in 2004 – a hard throwing righty who can get K’s (also what frankie is now but he can’t do that and close).

unfortunately, guys like those are hard to come by since they are basically closers in waiting and are valued as such. we obviously have enough pieces to snag one but it’s not an easy fix.

but there is a guy in AAA…

Feliz could be that guy

I’d much rather take a chance with Feliz in there for a K than Jennings and his complete inability to keep inherited runners from scoring.

Having said that, for the first batter he faced last night, I’m ok with conceding the run to get the out in that situation. It was the next one that bothered me. (hope I’m remembering that correctly, I was dozing off.) Either way, I have less faith in Jennings with a runner on base than almost anyone else in the pen. He should probably just get mop up time. I may be overreacting there, but I just do not have any trust in him.

And yeah, SSS issues apply, but those are still the #‘s and it’s a fairly large discrepancy.

I’m just saying, that’s probably Ron’s reasoning behind throwing Dutch into so many RISP situations out of the ‘pen this year, is he’s looking for K’s – Dutch just isn’t delivering them. Hopefully Ron will take note of this at some point, and stop trying to use him like he’s 2007 CJ Wilson or something.

He'll start pitching like he's capable when he's got his sec's and fastball command tuned up.

Can’t do that when you’re always coming into the middle of an inning with men on base.

For the record, I’d be less up in arms over Dutch in the bullpen if there was just one simple ground rule: never bring him into a game if he’ll be coming in pitching out of the stretch. He either comes in with the bases empty or starts his own innings.

How many innings is enough

I like him in the bullpen for now… but I wonder if it doesn’t hurt 2010. If he stays in the bullpen the rest of the season, he might finish with 100 innings, meaning he shouldn’t go much past 125 next season.

In other words, a little over half a season as a starter. Then they have to shut him down to limit his innings.

Or we’ll be talking about Holland as Correa 2.0.

With good health

and Davis in OKC the rest of the year, I don’t think it’s inconceivable to think Blalock is going to end up with 35 bombs, maybe more, with an OPS over .900.

Seeing how Bradley got a 3 year / $ 30 million deal, I’m very curious what Blalock will end up getting.

Gracias, bigsteve.

It has only been 2 weeks but I have been following Hank very closely all year so I am not shocked.

When you factor in what he’s done in his last 650 major league ab’s, how much physical talent he was blessed with (22-23 year olds don’t usually do what he did) and the fact that he was in a contract year….nothing that he is doing right now is surprising me.

Davis going to OKC should help him get his head right but the major beneficiary to him leaving is Hank Blalock.

If you're such a saber-head why are you subscribing to the "contract year" phenomenon?

I'm not sure what to make of the "contract year"

phenomenon but I don’t dismiss it.

My deal with Blalock had much more to do with how he played when he was younger (meaning he had a boatload of natural ability that only the great ones or very good ones have) and that he had done quite well over his last 600-700 ab’s in The Show.

He needs a lot more consistent ab’s v leftys this year before we can definitively say what he is against them.

Personally, I think he’s somewhere between his 2008-2009 numbers against them.

Blalock

He has 912 career AB’s against lefties.

What exactly are you waiting for? 2000 AB’s?

Do we summarily dismiss how Blalock

did v leftys in 2007 & 2008?

No

But we don’t isolate it, either. Over his career, he sucks at hitting lefties.

Its not like those were full years

130 combined at bats vs lefties, well under the PAs he had vs lefties in 2006 and 2005 individually.

the preceding post was a great success.

Whoa

Let’s say Blalock gets 37 HR’s (he’s projected to hit 39) with 105 RBI and a .900 OPS.

What contract does he sign?

2/15 with a 3rd year team option most likely

Total value may be 3/24

he's a 1b/dh type

who should only play against RHP who has big SLG #‘s but terrible OBP #’s. He has a history of injuries and teams are seriously trying to cut payroll.

Even with the numbers you suggested, 1yr, $2-4 million.

If I had to guess where Hank will land in 2010

I would say Oakland.

Beane liked him in the past, probably realizes how much natural talent Blalock has because of what he did as a 22-23 year old and he also has a huge need at 1B (and money to spend after Holliday/Giambi leave).

I dunno if you were at the frisco all star game

But he the ball impressively far in the home run derby

by BuckyB on Jul 11, 2009 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

He had to have been hitting the ball 450+

It was out of the stadium, across the street with cars driving on it, over a fence that separates a parking lot and that street, and deep into the parking lot

Everyone in the stadium was in awe

Anyway,

I really hope he isn’t Giambi Jr.

Supply and Demand

Potential LHB 1B/DH FA’s after 2009 season

Hank Blalock
Aubrey Huff
Nick Johnson
Jason Giambi (should be bought out, might retire)
Mike Jacobs (should be non-tendered)
Carlos Delgado (might be toast)
Russell Branyan
Adam LaRoche
Jim Thome

It’s a buyer’s market.

http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2009/07/cruz-to-participate-in-home-run-derby.html

Right fielder Nelson Cruz was added to the All-Star team Friday morning and asked to participate in the Home Run Derby on Friday night. Cruz said he will be one of the four members of the American League squad Monday at the derby, which Josh Hamilton starred in last year.

Way OT and not meaningful, but

I dunno if this has been linked yet

But the following rookies are apparently ahead of Elvis in ROY voting:

Andrew Bailey, Romero, Porcello, Bergesen, Niemann, Nolan Reimold, Alfredo Aceves, Brett Gardner, Brett Anderson, Scott Richmond

and soon to be included are price, wieters, and beckham
