this team could use the break.

We really do need another bat in here somewhere. I’m also glad that instead of resting, Josh Hamilton will be participating in the all star game.

No

this surgery usually takes 2+ months to recover from, so no, I think he needs to rest up some more. Cause he’s missing pitches he would have crushed last year.

It’s hard to win with poor run support, but the Ryan Doctrine looked suspect tonight. I wish someone would analyze the Rangers staff after 100 pitches or so. I’m too lazy.

Ian Snell must have...

,,,raped Neil Huntington’s cat while simultaneously forcing it to run over Neil Huntington’s wife.

From the outset, it seems kinda nice to hear a GM provide some honesty in admitting his own mistake but that kind of gets washed away when you read on and discover that he attempts to absolve himself by saying it was a good signing “on paper” (i.e. “It was a good signing at the time it was made and thus a correct decision by me, given all the information available at the time about Snell and his future prospects. I reasonably believed he would continue to be a good pitcher when I signed him to this contract and, instead, he unpredictably turned to shit. So blame Snell and his newfound shitiness, not me.”)

What on earth could have possibly motivated him to make these remarks about Snell publicly when he still has control over the player and the very contract he’s talking about which he, by his own admission, is considering trying to trade!!!????!!!

I can see a GM admitting he made a mistake in signing a particular player after-the-fact. After he’s been traded or released or whatever. But while he’s still with the team and the very “mistake” contract he’s talking about is the same one he presumably is also concurrently trying to convince some other GM to trade something of value for?

What would possess a GM to torpedo whatever potential trade value one of his own players might have had by openly admitting and declaring in public that that player actually has negative trade value to him (i.e. a “mistake” contract)?

Huntington must have been drunk when he made these comments or else Snell must have done something to piss him off so bad that he doesn’t even give a shit that he’s gonna lose any leverage and bargaining power he may have had in trading Snell. Or at least pissed him off to the point where the satisfaction he gains in publicly lambasting the

solid in every way, it’s just the fact that he plays every fucking day that destroys me. It’d be one thing if he was putting up the line he did last year, but man, the fact that he plays so much (and hits so high in the order) destroys me.

I'm not

by FirebatM3 on Jul 12, 2009 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Murphy

his walk rate has naturally trended downward from where it was at the end of April because it never should have been so high in the first place. The increased walks early in the season were just the by-product of him being in such a bad groove at the plate. He was clearly fouling off and/or laying off pitches that he normally swings at and puts into play, often with a good amount of authority. That he managed to draw an uncharacteristically high 7 walks and 0 hits in his first 30 PA wasn’t due to any improved approach at the plate which he subsequently has abandoned…it was simply because he couldn’t put the ball into play and/or was hesitant to even attempt to put close pitches into play while he was scuffling so bad, figuring he was better off taking and hoping it would be called a ball.

The only important trending is in his OBP, which has trended upward and upward as the season has progressed, reaching its peak of .362 prior to the beginning of his most recently played game. Given that his OPS is up around .900 since starting the season 0 for 23 but with 7 walks, the reduced walk rate is something that doesn’t bother me. The David Murphy of recent games who doesn’t walk all that much but puts a lot of balls into play with authority is clearly a more effective David Murphy than the more tentative and more selective Murphy we saw at the start of the year.

by brianphayes on Jul 12, 2009 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

That David Murphy

also has a lot of repetitive skills mirrored by the rest of our outfield. Really, I’d rather have a guy who can put up a high ISOPatience score than have another guy who relies on BA.

I'm not sure

the Reds have that many commodities or any reason to trade their best ones for a player like Byrd. I mean, they’ve got some interesting pen arms, but I don’t really see the pen as an area of need, especially with Francisco-O’Day-Wilson and Grilli pitching well, with Feliz, and maybe McCarthy, as a 2nd half addition.

Right now, we probably need one more decent starter and one right handed bat. I don’t see that in the Reds organization.

And I do like their rotation better, especially if Washburn continues to step-it-up. You know King Felix and Bedard are solid.

They are not going to win more games than the angels. If they beat us its for 2nd instead of 3rd which I don’t care about this year.

Washburn will fall off at some point, Bedard will go on the DL, Branyan isn’t actually a .970 ops player, they don’t have enough to win 88-90 games. We might not either but yeah if we don’t then it doesn’t matter anyway.

But obviously we still need to beat them, 3 of 4 going into a break would be quite meh even though the overall position will still be pretty good. So uh.. lets sneak out a win tomorrow osmehow please.

90 at minimum imo.

the preceding post was a great success.

I don't think

we can make a definitive answer yet. I’d like to see how the Angels handle the Rivera-Hunter-Guerrero injuries.

Well mid september would be too early for a definitive answer

But history suggests it won’t be, and the angels offense looks really good when healthy and not particularly bad even now. I’d be surprised if they tank it now. Its our head to head matchup thats gotten us where we are, obviously.

the preceding post was a great success.

Angels pitching looks heavily mediocre though

I’m still not too worried about the Angels. What you said about Branyan applies to Rivera and even Hunter. And Vlad looks like a corpse out there. Their MIF still look like a mess and Howie Kendrick looks like he’s a bust.

I don’t think they’re that good of a team either.

I dont think...

that you can use the angels current numbers to make predictions

they are in the middle of a hot streak and it is unreasonable to assume that this will continue…

AJ

vs LHP
2006……..260/.390/.543…..154 PA
2007………225/.339/.445…. 218 PA
2008……..178/.302/.329…..86 PA
2009…….232/.360/.478….86 PA before his 0 fer tonight

All of his numbers for this season are trending downward toward his 2007 numbers of .222/.311/.413. This team could use a RHB in the middle of the order. Unfortunately there is not one dowm on the farm.

Jones is much better than Blalock against LHP

a .360 OBP is fine unless an obviously better righty bat comes along cheaply. Blalock is basically 2009 Chris Davis against lefties, hitting just .194/.206/.387 and striking out 15 times with zero walks.

Our current tie (basically) with the Angels feels a lot better than

our being tied with them around the 3rd week of June did. At that point we had played 7 more home games with 10 road games left against Anaheim.

Now we have basically played the same number of home games… and have only 7 road games at Anaheim left (to our 3 home games).

I’d still consider it the equivalent of being about 1.5-2.0 games back… but I was thinking the previous tie felt more like 3-4 games back.

Big game tomorrow. A win for some momentum into the All-Star break would be great… likely leave us +0.5 up (with Sabathia facing Lackey), and have us 8-3 to start July.

He's been streaky...

…and has had 3 bad games following up a 3-game stretch with 5 HRs (including some huge ABs in a big series at Anaheim).

He’s an .880 OPS this year. That is still a long way from his .740 of ’07.

by Texas_Dawg on Jul 12, 2009 12:25 AM CDT reply actions

At this point

I really question if what we need is another streaky guy who’s stopped walking recently. AJ has been better than we could have hoped, but that improved is on the strength of his SLG%. He can be upgraded, and really, I see very little point to having both him and Blalock on this team,.

The question is

what is the price for upgrading Jones?

lastest streak

5 of his 8 hits in his latest streak were for extra bases (4 HR and a 2B). That won’t continue. The Rangers can’t afford to have such a streaky, all-or-nothing hitter batting 4th.

And our other options are.......

Hank Blalock and Nelson Cruz.

Yeah, I’m gonna say that we have nothing but Streaky, all-or-nothing hitters.

Any creative stats-sorters?

It seems like Millwood always gives up big hits and HRs against the Rob Johnsons of MLB. Is there a way to find out the AVG or OPS against Millwood by batters averaging below .200 or OPSing below .600 entering the game?
