Pena to All Star game replacing Pedroia

Dustin Pedroia is tending to family health issues and Carlos Pena is replacing him.  Why not Ian Kinsler?  They are swapping a 2B for a 1B.

And also

Since Pedroia got in on the fan vote, why not take the next highest vote count in the fan vote for 2B?

Oh that’s right, you already picked your team’s 2B to go, so ignore the fan voting and pick your team’s 1B to go.

Yep, Its bullshit

If you’re not going to pick Kinsler then you have to pick Lind. Fuck Joe Maddon.

This is complete and utter bullshit

Kinsler deserves this over Young, Hamilton, Pena, and definitely Zobrist.

zobrist?

hahahahahahahaha

go look up stats

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

but the fact that he was a bench player for a month. I don’t put him above Miguel Cabrera, Kinsler among others.

Meh...

it’s hard to argut that Ben Zobrist hasn’t been better than Kinsler so far this year. The fact that he has 1.012 OPS and better #‘s than Ian in 100 fewer PA’s backs that.

Bench player for a month or not, Zobrist deserves to be there over Kinsler.

He's on the managers team.

Tough to get worked up about Kinsler not going considering he’s really only had one All Star Caliber month.

Is there anywhere that MLB posts the final vote totals? How much did Pedroia and Inge beat Kinsler by?

Also, Kinsler doesn’t really deserve it

Best 2B in the league...

I fail to see how he doesn’t deserve going to the AS Game.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Probably because

he was only the best 2B in the league for one month.

Well,

I’m not saying AJ should make the All star game, I’m saying he shouldn’t be released. Somewhat different standards.

I think Kinsler may come back and put up big numbers, but I don’t think its outrageous that a manager used the opportunity to stack the club with his own players. Kinsler could have made it a no brainer decision, but he pretty much slumped into the ASB.

by DJCahill on Jul 13, 2009 7:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

why doesnt he deserve it?

The one argument I might buy is that selection to the AS game should be based purely on giving the team the best chance to win and not on first-half performance and that instead of having a well-rounded back-up 2b, the AL would be better served with some combination of a really good power hitting OF/DH and an excellent 2b defensive replacement. With the giant AS rosters, the manager theoretically has more flexibility to mix and match guys so that he can limit their exposure to areas of the game that might be considered weaknesses. Even if you did that, it would be hard to find a 2b over kinsler who would be that much better as a defensive specialist, so you might as well just take him.

The other thing you might say is that his current slump has a likelihood of carrying over into the game itself, and therefore his inclusion doesnt really help give the AL a better chance to win….which is sort of ludicrous because it would beg the question should the all-star rosters just be a collection of the league’s hottest hitters? hell no.

Anyway Im curious as to why you think he isn’t deserving.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 12, 2009 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hank Blalock's OPS is 27 points higher than Kinsler's

Kins has been good, but doesn’t “deserve” anything this year. If he got it it wouldn’t be a disgrace, but it isn’t a disgrace for him not to get it either.

The simple way of stating why Kinsler needs to be in the AS Game

+1

I think some of those meatier statistics really tell a lot. Kinsler has cooled down with the bat big time, but his defense has been great. Tied for 12th in the AL in WAR is sufficient enough for me to say a guy is deserving of all-star recognition.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 13, 2009 12:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It shows

Zobrist way ahead of him, and Pedroia and Hill not that far behind.

a guy who hasn’t played 2B ahead of him and then him still ahead of Pedroia and Hill despite only “being the best 2B in the league for a month”.

I guess

if they used that stat instead of Fans votes, player votes, and the AL WS manager, then Kinsler would be in.

Yep

Instead, you get the manager picking his team as replacement players and have NY and Boston vote every player on their roster and the player votes become pretty meaningless in the end.

I think

most of the team looks pretty good. Its not like they were bringing in replacement level scrubs to fill holes. I’ve definitely seen worse.

i dont have a huge problem with him not getting in.

i think the differences between him and a lot of other guys in the same tier, both 2B and other positions are miniscule. but it’s absurd to say he doesn’t deserve it. He has been the second most valuable 2B, has been productive both offensively and defensively, and is one of the best players on a team that is outperforming expectations.

Kinsler may have a mediocre OPS compared to Blalock, but he also plays at a demanding defensive position and also plays it well and also runs the bases very well. When you add up all those things, getting a guy with an OPS in the .820s is a boon. He also has a suspiciously low BABIP in the 240s, which may in part be due to him hitting a lot of fly balls. but i think he’s also had a little bit of bad luck compared to some of the other hot-hitting AL 2B.

I’m not going to go on and on about the injustice of Kinsler not getting in. All-star games are never going to be perfectly tailored to reward the best performers, and that’s fine. He’ll have plenty more all-star games to go to I imagine. I just think it’s ridiculous to say he doesn’t even deserve to go when he has been more valuable that several other players who are going.

aren’t selected based around stats..
It’s just a popularity contest…

Okay...

and your point is? The initial fan voting is based around popularity, and I’m fine with that.

The pitchers taken and other players who replace injured players has always been based around stats and who is having the best season though. Otherwise when an NL player was hurt Manny would have be selected or A-Rod in the AL.

that isnt the issue on THIS argument

The issue is that Joe Maddon picked his own player over a couple other more deserving players. Honestly, i have no problem with Kinsler not being picked but Lind should be in the game. Terrific first half, LH bat, etc.

by Michael Cave on Jul 12, 2009 11:14 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My problems are:

1) Maddon should have taken the 2B with the next highest vote total

And…

2) MLB rules should require that if a player declines to attend, he must be replaced with a player from the same position.

he did that with Cruz. Nellie was next in line in the player vote and replaced Hunter.

Even though Lind should have gone before Nellie imo, and I love me some Nelson Cruz.

Pena for Pedroia is a 1B for a 2B. Not the same IMO.

The only way to fix this problem is for the Rangers to reach the WS and let Wash pick nothing but Rangers and give the MLB and the rest of the league the big FU.
