Jeff Wilson says the Rangers are confident, even though they have lost their last two going into the break.
Wilson also looks at the different routes the three Ranger All Stars took in getting to the game...
Ron Washington says that he thinks Ian Kinsler, Kevin Millwood, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, in particular, can use the time off the next few days.

I don't understand
how Salty can use a few games off. We have a capable backup. Maybe he needs to get in more games. Maybe Teagarden should catch 2-3 times a week.
In general its tough to see how a position player is fatigued. With natural offdays, and capable backups, like Teagarden for Salty and Omar for Kinsler, you can probably get everyone 2 days off a week or so. If players are getting so tired their output is down the tubes, it just seems a prudent way to go.

I'd like the seeing the catching roles flip flopped
I don’t think there is a definitive answer to what Teagarden’s bat is going to produce. It’s time to start finding out. Play Salty a couple times a week and let TT have the majority of the starts for a month or two.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
Yeah, I wouldn't mind it either.
I’m not saying Salty is a bad catcher, he looks like he will be an average catcher, but it would be good to see what Teagarden can do with more playing time.

yes sir let's have more Tea shall we?
Enough of Wash saying he’s going to play him more, how about actually doing it this time.
Playing every 3rd or 4th game is not a fair indicator of what he can do, letting him get some kind of rhythm going would be, plus let’s face it Salty’s been sucking bad.
The I.Q. test has been abolished.
It is now the Gardner Scale.
TTs been nursing "hidden" injuries too.
His history is starting to make me very wary.

I didn't know that
That changes everything. If TT hasn’t been able to stay healthy in a backup role, then our “catching surplus” might end up just being a servicable young starter and a good young backup – which is no surplus at all.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.
It also appears that the centerpiece to the Teixeira trade when it was made
isn’t much more than Gerald Laird.

I could use some days off
Following the ups and downs of a contending team is definitely more draining than following a team deep in rebuild mode. What a fun roller coaster the first half has been. If the race stays this close between the top 3 teams in the West, those September head to head matchups are going to be so intense. Gameday threads will have 500 comments before the first pitch.

September matchups
Sturm pointed out the final two weeks this morning…
http://insidecorner.dmagazine.com/index.php/2009/07/13/machine-gun-mondays-2/
At Oakland (4) Sept 21, 22, 23, 24
Tampa Bay (3) Sept 25, 26, 27
At LA Angels (4) Sept 28, 29, 30, Oct 1
At Seattle (3) Oct 2, 3, 4
Brutal, but Tampa and Angles series have gone great so far. The Rangers’ record against LAA this year has been absolutely gigantic.

I gotta get to some of those @Angels games
If it’s a close race, we’ll need all the fans there we can muster. The Angels fans turn out and are loud in close pennant races.
Go Rice Owls!
Everyone loves Elvis
but his .253/.315/.350 is one of the reasons you really couldn’t afford (the other big one is the Catchers combined .239/.292/.361) to be too patient with Chris Davis, and the reason you really can’t plan on bringing Borbon up.
Now, low offensive output is absolutely worth it at Shortstop in my opinion, and Andrus will definitely get better with age. However, having Elvis does to some extent limit your roster flexibility if you think that you need to have a much better than average offense to contend. We are just a little over league average (4.94 R/G versus the AL average 4.82) currently, and hopefully the offense can get going a little stronger after the break.

Yeah,
thats kind of a natural development. I’m not really bitching about it or anything, because I think its fairly natural.
I just point it out to counteract some of the “Borbon needs to be playing now!” and “We needed to be more patient with Chris Davis!” viewpoints that some of the more extreme “put development ahead of contending” folks have.
Unfortunately, the price for Andrus’ glove is his bat right now, and while that price is worth paying, it means you really can’t pay for Borbon’s or Davis’ glove.

I think the Rangers are doing a good job balancing those priorities right now, they may have stuck with Davis just a little bit too long. Hopefully Blalock’s hot streak (and good health) continues that long.

Daily Oklahoman: RedHawks notebook: Chris Davis believes he’s ready
Infielder Chris Davis said after Saturday’s win over Iowa he is ready to return to Texas, though it is unclear if he’ll get his wish. Davis went 2-for-4 Sunday and has hit .370 with the RedHawks. The Rangers sent Davis down to OKC to work on his swing July 6.
.
“I definitely think I’m where I want to be," Davis said. "I had good at-bats off a lefty, I was squaring balls up. I think it’s just a matter of time before I get the call."
.
Davis has had plenty of support from fans, including his mother, who was here for a doubleheader Saturday.
.
“I’ve seen a lot of people with signs and a few who told me they came up from Arlington to watch me play," he said. "That means a lot."
I'd like to see him get
100 PAs down there, so maybe 3 more weeks?
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
i'm not sure about the number
but I want him to be bored down there. another week at least, maybe 2 is ideal (if I wasn’t lazy I would look at the schedule and pick a date).
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
Assuming he keeps hitting well down there
I’d say bring him up for the start of the Detroit series on the 27th. Somewhat arbitrary, but at least that would give him about 4 weeks down there.

through May and June Adam had some quote or another from Davis saying that he’s beginning to see the ball better, or that the day or two off was good to get him straightened out, or that Rudy gave him some pointers that will fix whatever was wrong.
But whatever, Davis is in AAA where he should be and I’m happy. I’m not going to beat the guy when he’s down. If he continues hitting well down there, I’m fine with him coming back up at the end of the month.

Smoak
Hopefully the Smoak v. Davis talk can quiet down for a little bit now. Although it’s a small sample size, Davis is hitting .370/.419/.630 at the same time Smoak is hitting .100/.278/.207. It would be best to give Smoak time to develop as a player and remember that Davis is not the complete disaster he appeared to be the first half of this season. Smoak is the future, but it is best not to hurry him through the system the way Davis was.

Smoak is fine
OKC stats:

He’ll be just fine. I agree that I would be in absolutely no hurry to call him up. I’d like to see him spend most of the rest of this year in OKC unless he’s just killing the PCL a month from now.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I think Smoak will adjust and go on a tear before too long. I just like the idea of tapping the brakes on him a bit and giving him the time to fully develop and experience some hard times. If he would’ve flown through every level, we might have seen a Davis repeat where Smoak’s holes would be exposed at the big league level where it is much harder to work on approach/mechanics and make adjustments.

leave him down there the rest of the yr. Start spring training next yr telling him and Davis ths job is up for grabs. This will be an interesting off season for both of them. When asked about the Rangers, Buck said that they are “fun to watch” because they “really pound the ball.” Then he mentioned that the “problem is always pitching.” Then McCarver said watching them is just “home run after home run” and about how many runs they score.

Have you guys actually looked at what percentage of our runs come from the longball?? It seems to me that, to someone just watching the highlights and looking at the box scores, our rep of being nothing but big bashers isn’t dead yet.
Yeah, they’re missing the improved pitching and defense, but until they have reason to dismiss our existing label they’re not likely to look beyond that.

For me, its not the HRs that annoy me
Its that right now, this offense isn’t the power house it was last year or in recent years. Yes, there is still a lot of home runs hit here, but the consistent mantra of “They’ll always score runs” and “They need more pitching” is stupid and I hate hearing it this season when it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Yeah, right now
the Rangers are a midpack offense, 6th in the league in R/G. despite being 1st in HRs.
However, the announcers were right talking about our HRs, we do lead the league. Unfortunately, our OBP is so low (3rd worst, only Oak and KC are lower), that we rarely have consistent offense. Hopefully when Smoak comes up, he can bring some OBP to the club. We have lots of guys who I don’t think we will ever see much OBP from.

Because that point of his is just funny
This team is JD’s team. From top to bottom, he has been the one in charge for almost all of these players being brought in. Nolan came in and did his thing but few actual moves have been made with Nolan in charge that have brought in any new talent. The few moves that were made are ones that good ol’ Donuts gives credit to JD for making (like Grilli and O’Day).
Although thinking about it now, he’ll probably just respond in saying that Nolan stopped JD from trading away all of our good players and ignore the facts with his head in the sand.

Because
GDawg is completely obssessed with him.

Yes, I'm so obsessed with him
I have been the only responding to all of his remarks he has ever posted here.

I don't think he always needs to be ignored...
…but when he makes absolutely retarded comments like “This thing was a mess when Ryan got here,” just leave it be. Nobody wants to even see it being discussed because it’s simply so stupid on the part of Josey Donuts.

How long to keep Davis in the minors?
The thought just occurred to me that Davis is a Boras client (right?).
Not sure how long it would take, but if this trip to fix his swing just happened to help us gain an extra year of service, that would be a pretty good by product, right? He was up in

He was up in late June last year, so I guess he currently has just a shade over 1 year of service time accrued. He’d have to stay down the rest of the year and a month or so next year, so if I have the facts straight it, the extra year is not likely to applicable.

Yeah
It would be real hard to get an extra year out of him. The only way I can see them doing it is to keep him down all the rest of this year, start next year with Smoak instead of Davis and then flip them in May sometime.
