Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

Tuesday morning things

Good showing by Nelson Cruz last night, a second straight finalist from the Texas outfield. Anthony Andro talks about his experience last night and how far he's come since last year. T.R. Sullivan takes his own look at the night and has some video of Cruz if you missed the contest.

Jeff Wilson looks at the three Rangers all-stars and where they've come from to make the team.

And Mike Hindman is up to the teens in his midseason prospect rankings.

Davis would be fun

though it’d be kind of embarrassing when he set the record for most swings and misses during a home run derby

But swings and misses aren't outs

And with Davis’ propensity to swing and miss or hit a homer, he’d have an embarrassing number of whiffs but then hit something like 200 home runs and win the thing.

Wait a minute...

Swings and misses aren’t outs?

This means MLB ‘08 the Show and it’s predecessors have been cheating me outs in the HR derby for years now!

I could be wrong, but I thought the only outs were balls hit that did not clear the fence

Of course, this is a gray area because you never see swings and misses in the Derby. You see them take pitches, but never whiff.

It’s not that I care or want to be a hardass on the home run derby rules, but I’m not surprised if there were some check swings not appealed to the first base umpire, then ruled outs. It’s supposed to just be fun, so whatever.

I say supposed to, because in hour 3 I was bored and my ears were almost bleeding from Berman’s stupid voice.

That home run derby was actually kind of fun

I was impressed by Cruz – he held his own around a bunch of real sluggers. Even in a completely nonsensical exhibition, it was cool. And he wanted to win, badly. And I like that.

Seems like a good place as any for me to say it. I really really wish Albert Pujols had come up as a Ranger…

I know – I actually DVR’d it because I was doing other stuff, and really only wanted to watch Cruz and Pujols (who is a baseball god) and fast forward through all the nonsense. I added an extra hour to the recording because I knew it woudl go long. It still cut off the very end of it.

Anyone know what time the first pitch should be thrown tonight?

All I see at Yahoo, Fox and MLB is 8:00 or 8:05 ET but that’s probably not accurate. I don’t feel like sitting around watching the “pagentry” and all that crap. Seems like that stuff takes about 1/2 an hour?

Love the Moreland analysis. I’ll take Brad Hawpe out of him.

Re: Beltre

That just seems like the usual MJH hyperbole to me. Sure, he’s got plenty of time, but save for the window dressing lines like “can’t take your eyes off him” and “oozing charisma” it still seems as though I might as well be reading a Greg Golson scouting report. Age is about the only thing Beltre has that really keeps me optimistic about him.

There are only two 3B on the team

when you consider that Inge is there as the back-up catcher.

The fact that Figgins can play so many positions (and is a worthy selection) probably factors highly in him being selected.

I wonder if Madden will move Figgins around between OF & 3B meaning Young gets at least 6, possibly more innings.
