Michael Young to start at third in tonight's All-Star Game

 Per Maury Brown's Twitter:

Longoria pulls out of ASG due to an infected ring finger on his right hand. Michael Young of Rangers to replace in starting line-up.

Does this mean that the AL will be one player short? I can't imagine that they fly someone out last minute.  Either way, will be cool to see 2 Rangers in the starting lineup, even if MY can't win the game in the top of the 9th.

Update:  Jamey's reporting it too.   He says Chone Figgins will replace Longoria on the roster.

Kindof OT: Random thought about Pena > Kinsler

I wonder if part of the deal with being that replacement player for Pedroia would be that he’d have to hit in the HR derby (we’ll note taht both Cruz and Pena, late replacements, were in it). The fact that two replacements and Inge were 3 of the 4 AL reps suggests that not many AL players wanted to partake.

It is always possible that Kinsler was offered the slot, but didn’t want to hit in the derby so he went to Pena instead. So the bashing of Joe Maddon for picking one of his boys may be misplaced.

Cool about MY.

Ironic

isn’t it how I will get unfairly ripped for being overly negative about the Rangers yet I will be proudly waving my Face Foam Finger tonight but rest assured, there will be a large segment of LSB (especially those who didn’t like it when Mikey Baseball treated Donuts like dogshit on his cleats last January) watching Young with gnashed teeth and wishing nothing but failure on him.

FOTF

really doesnt deserve to be there, much less be the starter. hes what, at best the 3rd best 3b in the AL, and rolen is probably 4th (who would you rather have?) — in fact figgins isnt too far behind where FOTF is, and is probably at least equal

im sorry, hes just not * that * good.

Your continued bitching and moaning

About a situation that at worst is a “given”, has worn really thin. Do you actually think it is fashionable, or makes you look smart or tuned in, to whine and carp about Young? Adam doesn’t need the bandwidth consumption, and I don’t need the immature snarky pronouncements. I guess you need public pronouncement, so fire away. I’m out.

yep

the Young bashing has gotten ridiculous. Yeah, we all get he’s overrated and definitely overpaid. But he’s far from a bad player; he’s been one of the best hitters on the team this season, and has been at the very least adequate at 3b considering he never played there before this season.

Who would I rather have between a gimpy Scott Rolen and Michael Young? MY.

uhh what?

FOTF is 16th in $$$ value per fangraphs
16th in WAR at 3b (even with mark teahan)
16th in RAR
9th among hitting 3b
last among fielding 3b

now please tell me how that screams allstar starter.

is he better than what we had at 3b last year? yes.
is he an well above average 3b? no.

im sorry, he may be a fan favorite around here but hes just not that good.

He was voted in by the players. That means, by the ASG criteria, that he deserves to be there. I can blame fans for dumb voting but the players? They probably know a bit more about MY than you.

How far of a drop would you estimate it is when the arch dumps people into the stadium?

I’d guess at least 30 feet. At that height, there would be a lot of broken legs, compressed spines, etc. when people landed.

I think I prefered the ad from a few years ago where Roger Clemens pitched Earth to Derek Jeter, who did a good job squaring up the bat on earth.

Weird statement and I never thought about it - but I'm not scared of the Angels either

It seems like the Angels are handing out a lot of crappy contracts and are getting pretty old. Vlad’s mortal (and probably not 34), Torii’s teaaring things up but he’s 33, Lackey doesn’t frighten me.

Kinda weird to think about it. If the M’s fall out of things they’ll start selling.
