Grade the Rangers (First Half Edition)

Alright, since we are at the break and since we don't play again till Friday night, I thought this would be the prefect time for us to grade the Rangers so far on their play this year. We have seen some of the local media do this already but now it is the LSBers time to give their thoughts and grades of the players, our manager and our GM (on how well he constructed this team and the draft he just finished).

Star-divide

In this grading, we are only going to include guys that have spent the majority of their time this season in the majors. So there will be no Julio Borbon in here or Willie Eyre. Just give the player a grade you feel that they deserve, plus if you want to add some comments on why you gave them that grade. Hopefully this will keep us busy up until Friday night when we play again. There will probably be one of these at the end of the year as well

heh

I find it amusing that you think CPP’s are a waste of time, but you’ll put out letter grades for each player.

If CPPs didn't get recced

and completely overwhelm the recommended fanposts everytime, I wouldn’t have a big problem with them. I’d just think they were silly.

The thing that makes CPPs pretty stupid also, is that a lot of the votes come from people who have never seen any of the players play. Its the blind leading the blind for the most part, based on other rankings they read in other scouting sites.

First-Half Breakout Player – Scott Feldman

First-Half Surprise – O’Day

First-Half MVP – Elvis Andrus – sorry but where would we be without his defense up the middle?

Biggest Bust (yeah, this will be tough…) – Chris Davis. Fairly obvious

Biggest Game – Gotta say the last game in the Angels sweep at the ballpark.

Worst Game – The Felix Hernandez 1-0 lead game recently. We had an ace beat and couldnt hold it.

2nd Half Prediction (either a final record, bold prediction, promotion, trade, surprise, etc.) – Rangers call up Feliz and he is dominates which causes Holland to step his game up a bit to not be outdone. Also, Chris Davis gets recalled and starts hitting like last year. Im really pulling for sabretooth.

First-Half Surprise – Andrus

First-Half MVP – Kinsler

Biggest Bust (yeah, this will be tough…) – Not really tough at all – Salty

Biggest Game – Closing out the sweep against the Angels in May

Worst Game – CJ blowing up in Detroit sticks out, but it’s hard to pick just one

2nd Half Prediction (either a final record, bold prediction, promotion, trade, surprise, etc.) – Rangers finish in a dead heat with the Angels for the division, have an off-day offensively in their 1-game playoff and miss the postseason. Final record: 88-75.

And I'm not gonna do individual players, but

Manger Ron Washington: C

Was impressed by some of his bullpen managment early, but toward the end of the first half it was same shit, different team/year.

GM Jon Daniels: B-

Showed some balls in the offseason, banishing MY from short, and swooped O’Day and Grilli away from the Mets and Rockies, but I’m not too impressed with the premature callups of Borbon and Holland, and I’m at a loss to why Benson was ever on this team and why Guardado is still here.

I can agree

on Benson and Everyday Eddie. I guess Eddie has small value as a lefty and a clubhouse guy. I dont mind the Borbon and Holland callups. I just have a problem with how they were/are used. I guess that goes on Wash. Despite his actual age Wash is still a young manager but his game management and SOME of his rookie management decisions have been questionable

by Michael Cave on Jul 15, 2009 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Salty over Davis?

I guess it just comes down to expectations. I don’t think people were realistically expecting Salty’s bat to power up this lineup; the same can’t really be said of Davis.

by brettgardner on Jul 15, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

yep

plus, while their offensive production is almost identical (Davis has a .007 edge in OPS), Salty plays at a much more premium defensive spot and has done pretty well in that position, despite doubts about his defense. I think Davis’ first half can be seen as a serious step backwards in his development, though one that can be corrected. While for Salty it seems like more of a coasting in neutral, not quite showing the overall improvement one would hope from a player his age.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 15, 2009 11:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Eh

Salty has always been my personal favorite, so for me, seeing him suck is more dissapointing than seeing Davis suck. I never really gave a shit about him becoming an above-average defender, and .244/.296/.368 is beyond dissapointing for a guy I thought was gonna be the next Vic Martinez.

I don’t wanna say I’ve given up on him, but he’s got 812 MLB PA’s and a .255/.318/.389 career line.

Salty has been pretty disappointing

and in most years, he’d be the lead contender.

But Salty hasn’t gotten demoted for being one of the worst players in the league and threatening to break one of the most embarrassing records in baseball.

He still finished the first half leading the team in WAR.

Slump or no slump, he played excellent defense and I still think he’s the most talented player on the team.

I vacillated

between kinsler and cruz for MVP. They both have been great on both sides of the ball and both have played in a lot of games. I ultimately went with cruz for his higher level of consistency and for keeping us afloat during some times where hardly anyone else was hitting. But Kinsler is a fine choice.

i dont think those are the most effective tools for evaluating a player's performance

jones has a higher OPS than kinsler. has he been more valuable to the rangers this year?

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 16, 2009 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree

there is no golden stat to rate a players performance. But I think it is ridiculous to say Ian has been great at the plate when he has his an astounding .225/.308/.430 since May 1.

Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY

by RangerMad on Jul 16, 2009 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Great might be a stretch when holding him up to the average major leaguer

but he has been great for periods, and below average for periods, averaging out somewhere around good to very good at the plate. But when you combine that with his defense and base-running, it makes him a very valuable player.

His offensive production since May 1 is ugly, but consider this: it is a full .70 points higher than elvis’ OPS for the entire season. And yet Elvis is still 5th in the AL amongst SS in WAR, still what youd consider an above average contributor. Now Ian can’t match Elvis’ defensive run-saving ability and 2B isnt as demanding as SS, but his efforts there are at least in the same ballpark. I thin the totality of Ian’s first half makes him one of our most important players. I feel like he is one of a few guys who youd least want to take out of the lineup on a given night.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 16, 2009 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I am sort of on a rant against

single metric valuation of players right now. Ian just happened to be in the crosshairs today.

I certainly hope the ASB rejuvenates Ian and he comes out hitting like he did in April (or at least a >.900 ops). If not, I don’t think this team wins the division. The offense really needs to carry them in the second half.

Worst Game – Almost every game in June

Second Half Prediction – Rangers stay close ‘til that last stretch of games and the final road trip. Finish in 2nd place behind Anaheim. The A’s will overtake the M’s for 3rd place. No trades are made. Feliz comes up but struggles. I jump off a bridge.
