Saturday a.m. Rangers things
At least the Angels lost...
Evan Grant says that Vicente Padilla got squeezed by the home plate umpire last night, and in particular, had strike three to Jason Kubel called a ball before leaving a pitch up in the zone that Kubel hammered for the three-run homer than won the game for the Twins.
Anthony Andro says that Josh Hamilton was the only offense last night.
Matt Harrison is going to head out on a rehab assignment next week, assuming his bullpen session tomorrow goes well. Meanwhile, the Rangers are going to drop a reliever after this series with Minnesota, potentially in favor of Esteban German, whose addition would require a 40 man roster move.
Jennifer Floyd Engel says the Rangers need Hamilton and Ian Kinsler to hit if they want to stay in the race.
And the Rangers have the biggest percentage increase in their TV ratings of any of the 30 major league clubs this year. Amazing what winning some games will do...

So...
if the Rangers bring up German the only guy I could see them dropping off the 40 is Bannister, no?
Will they send down Mathis? Or could they cut ties with Nippert?

Why not drop Arias
for German? Arias is out of options next year and if he is not good enough for your team in this situation then he won’t make your team out of ST next year.

Boy, EG, AA and JFE are really bringing the HSO's this morning.
Anyway, re: German… between him and Feliz it looks like we’re gonna need two 40 spots pretty soon… Guardado and who else? Bannister? Asian Kid (again)? DFA Dusty Tits (again)?
I’d say Willie Eyre, but he apparently has peephole footage of Wash and JD or something.

Mendoza probably loses a spot, and Nippert is probably gone at some point.

Because the Rangers aren't going to do that
They aren’t going to go with one lefty in the pen.
And they like Guardado.
And he’s pitched well this year.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 18, 2009 10:15 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Setting aside what should or shouldn't be done
This is a team that is in a pennant race.
Guardado is one of the leaders in the bullpen, a very well respected guy who also has some playoff experience and who has pitched well this year.
Why would you think that, given all that, the Rangers would consider cutting him loose instead of, say, Mathis or Nippert?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 18, 2009 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because I think he's a shitty pitcher who can't be relied upon in a pennant race.
Not that Nippert and Mathis are any better, really, but they’re long men. Eddie is a 50 year old LOOGY who can’t get lefties out. Once we call up Feliz to be an all-purpose bullpen flamethrower, I don’t see that we have much use for Eddie.

I'm not asking what you think
I’m asking you why the Rangers would do that.
Since his ugly 4 run outing in mid-April, he’s had a 2.66 ERA.
They don’t think he’s a shitty pitcher. And even if they did, I don’t think they believe that the marginal upgrade between him and, say, Mathis or Nippert would justify the political/clubhouse/whatever impact it would have on the players to cut him loose.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 18, 2009 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I know that's therr thought process
Mine is, I don’t see how they’ve arrived at such a thought process.
It just seems like a slam dunk no-brainer to me, kinda like trading Gagne just in the nick of time was. Fine, he’s supposedly a great clubhouse guy, and great, he’s somehow managed to prevent runs from scoring since April. But I still would not want Eddie on the mound in any key situation for this team down the road. Cut him before he does implode again, and ask him if he’s ever considered a coaching job.
But keeping a guy around exclusively for his “intangibles” when you have better options talent and stuff-wise… that’s something I just don’t comprehend. If we’re going to sacrifcie player development to win this year, I don’t see why we’d be so guarded about the clubhouse.

They aren't keeping him around just for his intangibles..
….when they feel they have better options available, though.
And saying that there are guys with better talent and stuff misses the point…that’s true, but talent and stuff doesn’t always get guys out.
They aren’t going to go forward with C.J. as the only lefty in the pen, and I believe the organization thinks that they are better off with Guardado in the pen going forward then with A.J. Murray or Doug Mathis or whomever you’d keep in his place.

Backwards you have it
if they were not worried about winning, they would concern themselves with acquiring more talent, and let “the clubhouse” work itself out.
Since they are currently in it, though, “the clubhouse”(chemistry, mental state, etc) takes on a much greater importance.

JFE is right about one thing
Kinsler needs to stop sucking so much like he has the last month and a half. Tough to see this thing going far unless both he and Hamilton are bringing the pain nightly.
We really need to see a stretch of Ranger Baseball, where the team is putting up 5+ runs every night for a few weeks.

He gets screwed by the umps….now that thats out of the way…
For the rangers to compete the rest of the way, we better have our offense get its head out of its ass.
3 runs last night…..all 3 driven in by Hamilton….2 of which were on a homerun.
I know JD is a little hamstrung with this team right now due to money, but for it to compete in the next few years we have to get away from this all or nothing aproach. I heard a stat last night that Andruw Jones has 30 hits, and 14 of them are homeruns….that is just fucking stupid.

we don't have 5 mil?
I think I heard somewhere that is all he is owed the rest of this year. His salary next year should not come into play.
I find it hard to believe that the Rangers would turn down an ace because of 5 million dollars. Now maybe that is the excuse being used so that we can keep our prospects, or prehaps some sort of leverage to see what other teams are willing to dangle before we dangle too much talent their way.

Maybe Halladay's looking to have his no-trade clause bought out.
Or maybe adding $5 million (or whatever it is) in payroll is actually a deal-killer for the Rangers. I don’t know what to think about this club’s financial situation anymore.

Well
We didn’t have $2 million to give Juan Cruz this spring. And we’ve been hearing from multiple sources all year the Rangers can’t add payroll. So I don’t know why the idea that we can’t add $5 million for Halladay would be such a shock.

I think the shock would be....
money vs outcome.
This team has talked about having an ace for probably my entire life, and now they can have one but 5 million dollars stands in the way….I could see if it was a guy that may help you but has question marks…..but this is a guy that can clearly put you in the running for the playoffs the next 2 years.
Also I thought that a big sticking point with Cruz was that he would cost a pick as well.
If the money issue is that crunched, then this team is screwed until they get a new owner.

From MLB Trade Rumors
Halladay Could Demand A Trade After The Season If Traded
By Mike Axisa [July 17 at 7:12pm CST]
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reminds us of a rarely used rule that could possibly come into play if Roy Halladay is moved before this year’s trade deadline. If a player signed a multi-year extension before October 2006 and is traded during the life of the contract, the player can then demand a trade during the offseason. If the team falls to trade the player by March 15th, he becomes a free agent. Halladay signed a three year, $40MM extension in March of ’06.
Javier Vazquez is the only player to take advantage of this rule in recent years, when he demanded a trade out of Arizona following the 2005 season. Since he already has a no trade clause it’s unlikely Halladay will end up with a team he doesn’t want to play for, but he could use this rule as leverage to get a contract extension after the season. That last part is just speculation on my part, though.
So that is something us to keep in mind…

Interesting.
I’d think that the Rangers would be interested in a contract extension if they actually pulled off a deal for Halladay, but I’d also imagine with the financial situation what it is, Hicks is probably not in a position to negotiate it this season…

Plus
the other big obstacle standing in the way besides the 5 mil is Halladay saying yes to Arlington since he has the full no trade clause. It all becomes a moot point if he says hell no to pitching in the ballpark.
