Adam...
did you perchance catch this in real time?

And, to stay on topic, it seems Chris Davis really needed a mental break from trying so hard to hit baseballs for the Texas Rangers.

What is he doing different?
I guess 8 Ks in 9 games is an improvement.

Hitting to LF is one thing.
He claims he’s gotten back to old drills that focus on hitting up the middle.

Why wasn't he doing them in Arlington?
Was he told he didn’t need to or they wouldn’t help? It is just coincidence that he gets sent down and he comes up with the idea to do some old drills at the same time?

Well,
at one point in the majors he said he was doing that, at Omar’s suggestion. I guess the lunkhead forgot anything but the Rudy method of “swing as hard as you can in case you hit it”

even still
he was swinging and missing on 88 mph fastballs in the majors, and he is hiting them in the minors.

I guess
I just see that he’s doing this against guys like Sidney Ponson and Casey Fossum and it tempers my enthusiasm.

It's not like he faced a Cy Young candidate every night in the bigs
For every Greinke, Halladay, Cain, etc. that he faced, there were others who aren’t that much (if any) better than Fossum and Ponson.
If he was destroying the ball in Class A, yeah it wouldn’t mean much and I’d agree. But much of the pitching he faces in Triple A will be replacement level or something near it. Until every ML team starts running out a rotation like the 90s Braves, it’s cause for at least some optimism.

I’m not suggesting they DFA him today, or that Davis is ready to come back yet, but let’s not pretend Jones has been tearing things up.

Also, when Sideshow was here, we were out of the race by May 1, and should have been in auditioning younger players mode. That’s not the case this year.

Actually, Sideshow Sammy on this team, being handled the way that AJ is would be a fairly useful player.
I think the front office and manager have gotten a lot more mature since they had sideshow sammy.

What I don't get
Is since Hammy has been back in the lineup, not once has he DH a night. Every game so far he has been playing in the outfield. Wasn’t it a goal of Wash’s to not play Hammy so much in the outfield and give him some rest in the DH spot?
Can’t you just move Byrd to CF, Murph in LF, and Cruz in RF? Sometimes I just don’t get Wash

Kinsler
Thats what i was thinking, he trys to hit for power more than contact so why not put him into a more traditional power hitting spot

One argument's that he shouldn't be trying to hit for power

Davis
One thing lost in bringing Davis back is how well Blalock has hit playing everyday. His July line: ,412/.723/1.135 in 51 PAs. He is hitting incredibly well since Davis left and he started playing everyday. Until he starts to slow down I see no reason to bring Davis back.

Good grief, have the Angels EVER wanted to give up a prospect? It’s like that franchise operates under the assumption that trading bid prospects is against MLB rules. Sometimes you can trade “meh” for value (see their Teixeira trade), but if you’re not careful you’ll end up with too many once valuable, now busted assets on your hands (see McPherson, Dallas).

The Angels don't have the prospects
Who are they going to give from their minor league system that would match up with the kind of offers that Toronto is looking for. The proposed deals from the Rangers that are apparently not enough for Halladay (ignoring the money aspect) would top just about anything the Angels could offer.

They either have to trade him or eventually play him or he’s going to be collecting Social Security benefits while still riding the Orange County-Salt Lake shuttle.
He’s still young, but geeze, it seems like we’ve been hearing about him as “the guy” for about ten years already and yet they still refuse to give him a fair shake. We’ve got hotshot rookies and near-ready prospects who were like in 4th grade when I first heard Brandon Wood’s name.
"andruw jones hits 3 HRS at LA of Anaheim last nite after hitting zero at LA of LA as Dodger in all of '08. thats nuts." SI_JonHeyman
At what point does Chris come back?
The purpose of sending him down was 2-fold: help him find what he lost this year at the plate and get rid of a 50% strikeout chance every time he came up to the plate. He has obviously found a way to hit, albeit against a lower level of pitcher. So that leaves the question would bringing him back up now improve the Rangers lineup?
My guess would be he arrives one hour after Blalock has been traded (just before the deadline)...
Ephesians 3:20-21...and I can only imagine
I don't see the Rangers getting a quality major league or major league-ready pitcher for Blalock
Right now, Blalock’s bat is too important a part of the daily lineup to trade him for anything less. Trading Blalock for less is giving up on winning the AL West this year.
by Mark from OC on Jul 18, 2009 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions
I've been a proponent of finding a way to trade Blalock for several years
But you’re exactly right. Under the current circumstances, it’d be a bad idea to move him at this deadline. If only he hadn’t been hurt last summer or the economy hadn’t sucked this winter…
"andruw jones hits 3 HRS at LA of Anaheim last nite after hitting zero at LA of LA as Dodger in all of '08. thats nuts." SI_JonHeyman
With the numbers hes putting up he may bring a nice player in return
Having said that if this team is still in a pennant race I don’t see them trading one of their best offensive players. The only way I think Blalock is traded is if there is already a deal in place to bring in a guy like Halladay and you can say the trade is to free up the salary to bring that guy in.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
As much as it stuns me to say this, subtracting Blalock may create bigger problems than the benefits added with Halladay
Halladay is of my favorite pitchers in the game today, but as good as he is, he can still only pitch every five days. Consistently scoring runs is a bigger issue this year than upgrading to a true ace at the front of the rotation. When you take Blalock out of the lineup, how much more troublesome does the offense become?
"andruw jones hits 3 HRS at LA of Anaheim last nite after hitting zero at LA of LA as Dodger in all of '08. thats nuts." SI_JonHeyman
That would depend on how Davis does when he comes back
I agree with you but if Davis came back and put up numbers like last year it would mitigate some the loss of Hank.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I just wonder how quick they plan to bring back Davis
Has anyone heard a comment from JD on this? I’m sure they don’t want to risk rushing him back and the lessons of Triple A not sticking like they should. I could see them keeping him in Triple A until September call-ups and then use him in the race down the stretch. I’d be real surprised, though, to see him back before the deadline.

You mean
the Blalock thats 1 for 8 after the break? I’m curious to know if his pre ASB hot streak is already over, and if we are back to Blalock in a funk we saw earlier.
I don’t know if its a sure thing that taking Blalock out of the order will hurt this team, because he is yet another streaky hitter on a team full of them.

Trading question
Aren’t the Rangers going to find themselves in a little bit of a crunch, 40-man speaking, this winter, and worse next year?
My question-couldn’t they package 2-3 of these middling/fringy prospects to maybe get a guy to help a little this season(a guy whose contract is up), as well as ease the numbers crunch this winter? I have no idea who, just hypothetically?
