Let me just add...

What this guy did was really fucked up.

Posting it here is probably just as fucked up. I realize that, but I figured some of you guys would want to see it.

why did you post this?

She was the victim of a crime, and you are encouraging more people to view it. Her lawyers have threatened to sue any and all who disseminate the footage. I’m sure Adam really appreciates you putting this up here.

as far as i can tell all he is doing is

disseminating information that such a video exists and is apparently accessible. it’s not really different from a news story about the video’s release. we are all adults here and know how to use google if we want to find this thing. i guess the tone of the post is a little tacky and voyeuristic but i hardly think it’s worth getting worked up about.

But making a post directing people to a site where they can view this fucked up criminal video is unethical. cmkelly29 basically recognized that much himself when he posted it. so why perpetuate it?

I totally agree with you.

But don’t expect many other to do so.

This is the interwebs, sanctuary of the fucked up pervert.

I have zero idea what this video is or if it’s real, but if it is real and she was really secretly taped without her knowledge, then it’s plenty fucked up and posting about it here is a douche move.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

Douche move?

Give me a break.

All that I said was that I had seen it, and if other people (who I guess are just as douchey as me?) wanted to see it, they could.

I consider many of you to be friends of mine, and I shared the info with you like I would with my own friends. I knew the high-and-mighty, morally pure folks here would give me shit about it. Oh well.

by cmkelly29 on Jul 19, 2009 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't know that finding the dissemination of a video of a girl being video taped naked without her knowledge or consent to be wrong made me high and mighty or morally pure.

(If that is indeed what happened here, I haven’t reasearched it and I’m naturally incredulous whenever something like this breaks on the internet.)

For the record I’m neither high nor mighty, and my morals are anything but pure.

Basically I think your viewpoint on this is sad. That’s all. And I struggle to figure how you could bristle at the notion this is a douche move. It’s pretty clearly douchey. Not that it’s some horrible abomination or a blight on the face of society or anything over the top like that, or even that it makes you a douche in totallity, just that this move itself is totally douchetacular. If this happened to your mom or sister or wife, wouldn’t you be outraged and want to throw the guy who did it through a brick wall?

The 40 Trumps All!!!

by thedirkatron on Jul 19, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course I would...

but then again, I understand how the internet works. I would want to kill the guy who taped it, but I guess I could understand why people would want to see it. I will admit that it’s probably not kindest act on Earth, but I’m not going to hate myself for sharing it with you guys.

I figure that much like the Paris Hilton video, this will make it’s way to everyone’s eyes at some point. If this was, let’s say, a year down the road and everyone had seen it. Would it be as bad?

My intentions were good, really. I just figured there would be a few guys who wouldn’t mind seeing it, and like I said, I consider you guys friends.

b) Girls do their hair naked and look at themselves in the mirror from a million angles while they do it all the time. They are weird.

re: A)

Things like this make a girl infinitely more famous.

Paris Hilton and that Kardashian chick with the comically huge ass for example. Maybe I’m just not pop culture-y enough, but I had no idea who those bitches were and then all the sudden one day it was like “SEX TAPE!” and then they were famous as shit.

Something like this would certainly seem to be not on the same level as a sex tape, but anything in that basic genre can obviously thrust someone into the mainstream for a little while.

That's kind of funny

I was listening to XM the other day, and they had a guy call in whose best friend had to take a dump COMPLETELY naked, even if he was in a public bathroom (and he had no qualms about pooping in a public BR, by the way).

So picture this: You go into the men’s room, and while standing at the urinal, you see pants, a shirt, socks, etc., all neatly folded over the stall door. Fucking hilarious. Or even weirder, imagine if you were in the shitter next to him, and he starts stacking his clothes over the wall you share.

He even has to take his watch off.

Evidently it is because his Mom always made him get buck naked when he was kid.

People are funny.

Looking at a video...

of a naked chick isn’t “deviant” I don’t think. It would have to be an activity enjoyed by so few people as to be outside the norm. Since if you go to Google and type “Erin Andrews,” and Google helpfully fills in for you “peephole video,” I don’t think this particular situation qualifies as “deviant.”

"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin

by benmor78 on Jul 20, 2009 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um ...

I wasn’t saying viewing the video was deviant. I said those viewing it were enjoying deviant behavior, as in they were enjoying illegal voyeurism. The videotaping of a naked woman unbeknownst to her is deviant behavior, and those viewing and defending the video are enjoying the deviant behavior.

by Melmart1 on Jul 20, 2009 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

But the very fact...

that so many people are viewing it precludes it being deviant. I’m just saying that “deviant” isn’t the right word. Maybe “reprehensible,” but not “deviant.”

"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin

by benmor78 on Jul 20, 2009 6:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So because a mass of people

view the video, that means that the guy who videotaped it was ‘reprehensible’ but not ‘deviant?’ Is that all it takes, numbers? That’s a pretty poor argument, I think. The masses don’t make something right. The masses are stupid.

by Melmart1 on Jul 20, 2009 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Deviant...

means “aberrant” or “outside the norm.” Definitionally, if a bunch of people are viewing the video, it’s not outside the norm.

Bullshit

People watch snuff films or else they wouldn’t exist. That isn’t deviant? Not that I’m taking a position about this particular film but to claim that others are doing it makes it OK doesn’t hold an ounce of water.

I know for a fact...

that those grainy topless celeb photos that show up in magazines are generally taken when the celeb in question believes they are in private, or at least reasonably private. So there’s a difference of degree, but not much.

"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin

by benmor78 on Jul 20, 2009 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I stand by my assertion

that peeping toms who videotape naked women are deviants. It’s not normal, not at all. And those grainy topless celeb pics aren’t exactly normal, either. As a percentage of the amount of pictures that are taken of said stars, I would say it’s a very small number. Which makes it abnormal, and therefore can likely qualify as deviant by your definition.

by Melmart1 on Jul 20, 2009 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

When exactly does something go from deviant to normal? The photograph itself hasn’t existed for very long.

by brettgardner on Jul 20, 2009 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

The grainy topless celeb pics...

appear in mainstream magazines, and so wouldn’t be deviant. And, rest assured, I’m not approving of the guy’s actions here, I just don’t think it rises to the level of deviancy.

"Blalock in the cleanup spot makes gives me agita." - Dustin

by benmor78 on Jul 20, 2009 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

How does watching the video make you any less deviant than the person that taped it? I guess the answer is that the tape exists, is on the tubes, so the harm’s been done. Still doesn’t seem right. Still doesn’t mean I might watch it.

Let the market sort out morality.

by brettgardner on Jul 20, 2009 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Huh?

Why would the market decide if people wanted to view a video that I presume is free (haven’t looked at it; not holier than thou just busy)? If it’s an illegal video the law sorts it out. If not it comes down to morality. Speaking of which, why isn’t it hypocritical that you object to others’ moral objections – isn’t that a moral objection of your own?

That you’re not really using the correct term here. If you mean “morally corrupt”, then OK—I couldn’t really care less from that standpoint. If, though, enough people agree with you to make it illegal, then I’m all for prosecuting the fuck out of him.

You don't think 'deviant'

is the right term for someone who sticks a camera in a hotel peephole and videotapes an unassuming woman naked without her permission? Because deviant is something that isn’t normal, and that sure as hell isn’t normal in my book.

You are right about them being morally corrupt. IMHO, the videotaping was deviant behavior. Plastering it all over the internet makes them morally corrupt as well. So maybe we are both right.

I would call that

abhorrent AND deviant. Deviant is simply something that is outside the norm. Sticking a camera in a peephole and videotaping w/o permission is definitely outside the norm. Maybe we just have different definitions of what makes something deviant.

We are not going to change each other’s minds, so I will respect your opinion and leave it at that. But thanks for not letting this devolve into some name-calling pissing contest like so many of these threads kinds of threads often become.

I'm sure Erin Andrew's incredible good looks have served her well in life

I would guess that she has enjoyed priveledges her whole life because of her looks, so it’s hard for me to work up a bunch of sympathy for her. I’m not saying that I condone what was done to her, I just think that if you really thought about it, this is a pretty small cross to bear.

A couple weeks of embarrasment in exchange for a lifetime of priveledge. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

I agree.

You seem like you’re a pretty smart guy, Todd. Probably enjoyed a lifetime of privelege due to your above average intellegence. No pumping gas or digging ditches for a living for Mr. Trice.

And so I therefor think it’s completely okay to secretly videotape you all sweaty and out of breath as you furiously masturbate to some nice Asian-Fisting pornography in the comfort of your home office, and then plaster it all over the internet.

A couple weeks of embarrasment in exchange for a lifetime of priveledge. Not a bad deal if you ask me.

I think you are pretty wrong about that

As dudes we don’t have any conception of how utterly humiliating it is for a woman, wherever her physical appearance falls on the scale of 10, to have her naked body exposed to just one unwelcome person, much less thousands on the series of tubes.

I respect you and your opinion a lot, Todd, but I think the conclusion you just came to, that this is essentially a blip on her career radar, is borderline asanine, and really, really faulty.

OK, last comment on the matter

In the first paragraph above you act like being seen naked is some emotion-wrenching experience for a woman. Guess that may be true for some of them, but plenty of women pose nude, dance nude, go to nude beaches, flash tits for plastic beads, wear as little clothing as possible, etc. Being seen naked isn’t some horrific experience that terrifies every woman on the planet, a lot of females like it.

I think this incident is basically a blip on her career radar, what do you think it is? An invasion of privacy without doubt, but what else? Something that is going to ruin her career? Absolutely not, her popularity is higher than ever. Something that is going to lose her money? Absolutely not, she can probably demand more money now than ever before in her life. If it’s not just a career blip, then what is it Brian?

And the reason I made the original post that started this is because I believe there are probably thousands of women in America that are just as talented as Erin Andrews, but not as easy on the eyes. Women that work in sports journalism that will never be handed the opportunities that Andrews has been. My guess is that the majority of those women would gladly swap places with her right now, peephole video and all.

Again, I never said that what happened to her was right, but if we are going to get worked up about people that are victims, there are a lot of victims that are in more sympathic situations in my opinion.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

by tricer on Jul 21, 2009 6:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is an easy distinction here.

Plenty of women choose to pose nude, choose to dance nude, choose to go to nude beaches, choose to expose themselves in public, and choose how to dress. Erin Andrews did not choose to have this happen to her, and any implication that the two are equivalent is indescribably short-sighted. Inferring that other women would gladly trade places with someone who illegally had her privacy violated also seems pretty sexist to me.

by jwiscarson on Jul 21, 2009 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think you are still missing the point

It’s not the nudity, per se, it’s the being spied on, leeringly eavesdropped on, with a camera, when you are at your most vulnerable. She was violated.

I did say career radar, but that wasn’t really what I meant. Obviously, this won’t have a harmful affect on her career, except for the occasional crude joke she will likely get about it from time to time doing interviews and whatnot. But I think you are kidding yourself if you think this is something that will be easily forgotten by her shortly. That’s what I meant to convey about the radar blip. I doubt she’ll feel comfortable in a changing room or bathroom for years.

These types of things are a big deal for women.

I'm Matt mutha-effing Bush, bitches, and mutha-eff East County.

An excellent point.

Simply because we have a difficult time measuring the emotional impact and long-lasting effects of these rights violations doesn’t mean that the emotional impact doesn’t isn’t substantial. Before, she likely had to deal with leers and obviously had to learn to cope with being objectified on a daily basis, but she didn’t have to wonder “how many of these men have seen me naked?”

by jwiscarson on Jul 21, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plenty of women have sex and it certainly isn’t some horrific experience that terrifies every woman on the planet, and a lot of females like it; but it would be ridiculous to infer from this that a woman forced to have sex against her will will see such a violation as a mere blip on her radar.

On the one hand I do think that attractive people, both men and women, have a big career advantage in televised media, but it’s really cynical and insensitive to view this thing in terms of her career. If she was indeed violated like this, it is an unfortunate and discomforting incident that should be divorced from her career.

by Smoakin in the Boys Room on Jul 21, 2009 9:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good lord

Since she’s attractive she deserves indignity? Is this some fucked up karma analysis? Yeah, she lucked out in the gene pool but that doesn’t mean she should be treated any differently than any other woman.

I remember a while back I saw a video of her interviewing Joba and it seems like he said something improper at the end. She didn’t deserve that either.

Dehumanizing people because of their looks

is the very sort of logic that “pretty people” use to pick on weird kids in high school. Applying the same set of actions to someone who’s attractive doesn’t make the world a better place, and is a pretty dim outlook on life regardless of the direction of discrimination.

Look: If anyone thinks women have an easy time of it, check out media images of women, and then consider that most women are more self-conscious to begin with because of societal pressures to fit into a very slim definition of “attractive”. I won’t even go into violence statistics, pay inequality statistics, or anything else far more tangible than this.

If you can’t sympathize with her because you think she’s attractive, sympathize with the situation.
