MJH on International Signing Day
MJH has a post at Inside Corner on signing day. The most potentially troubling part:
This year — assuming the Rangers have the cash to sign anybody, and it’s entirely possible that they don’t — it appears that this guy is going to be their top international signee.
Ugh.
The "this guy," incidentally, is Jurickson Profar, and there's a YouTube video embedded there of him.
Check it out.

so no big LA signing?
we are completely out on Pimentel?
What the hell kind of bullshit is this? Who the fuck told Hicks it was a good idea to buy Liverpool? Effing moron. What kind of businessman couldn’t see this shit coming.

A whole lot of them
The whole economy has been running more and more on debt for almost 30 years. Not being able to get hands on financing is causing quite a few companies to go bankrupt.

Yesp, and I don't see any signs of it loosening up soon..
Since we’ve such a fantabulous job of “stimulating” the credit markets back to life. I’m dubious whether or not any big deals like the Rangers’ sale can get done in 2009.

The real problem
is that “business as usual” since the ’80s is all about drowning yourself in debt. If you have a business with strong assets, you are a takeover target. Its been a really stupid business model for a very long time.
I think its a fundamentally good thing that a lot of businesses that are close to 100% leveraged, like the Rangers, are going under.

I agree, but I'm afraid that too much meddling and market engineering is at work...
I think that a shakeout, where the type of firms you mention get weeded out, is inevitable and is a necessary thing.

Yeah,
I would have preferred the big Auto companies manned up and went into bankruptcy on their own, but American business is all about going to congress and whining for help while talking about how important the free enterprise system is.

Wanna make a quick side bet?
I bet when GM finally goes to bankruptcy, want to bet that the administration steps in and offers some sort of plan where they will assist as long as GM commits to going green big-time?
I have a hunch that the problem has been “gamed” a bit to produce this result.

I'm just glad
that the CEO got capped and the shareholders were wiped out. That should be the result of every company that goes to congress begging for help.

Sorry bout the name calling
I can filter some folks, but on those back and forths that go forever don’t get filtered.
I just don’t understand the point of arguing with someone when you can predict his response ahead of time.

look im no business guru but i saw this coming 18 months before it did
all the rich people around me (people who coulda taken it to heart and saved millions) were so busy trying to squeeze every buck out of life with every loan any1 would give them that they ignored anything i said or more important folks, but hey…
when the pound to dollar went haywire, i knew the shit was wack. no1 spoke of inflation for over a year before the crash. Hell, Hicks bought The Reds at a moment in time when the pound was worth more to the dollar than at any point in 30 years. Thats friggin stupid. Its as bad a business decision as i bet hicks has ever made in his life

Yeah you'd think foreign exchange rates
are one of the first things you’d look into when leveraging a buyout.

didnt he also take the loan out in pounds instead of dollars?
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Exchange rates...
If it was a loan, buying at the point would have been a good idea – assuming that the dollar would regain value thus lowering the price of the team. Hicks might have been counting on a correction.
It would have been horribly stupid as a cash purchase.

Profar
While hes an interesting signing its hard for me to get excited over him being brought in as a SS not a pitcher given that signing bonus especially if he turns out to be the only big signing.

If he's not meant for it
All it takes is posting a 500 OPS in the DSL to switch him back to pitching.

good SS prospects
are probably just as valuable as good SP prospects right now. Take a look around the minors, there is a dearth of quality prospects that can play big league SS.
I don’t know anything about Profar, but if he has the tools to be a ML SS, I’m just fine with letting him play there. Huge value if he pans out at that position.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

we don't have a lot of MIF prospects
and it goes with JDs approach, as far as position players goes, of building up the middle. catchers, MIF and Centerfield.

Thats the thing
from what I’ve read he isnt nearly the prospect at SS as he is at SP. Seems I saw that he’d be getting considerably more money if he signed as as a pitcher.
Who knows what will happen though, possibly feeding him what he wants to hear to sign him then if he fails he becomes a pitcher again.

Why is this a concern?
Dude’s just guessing, and people who are way more knowledgable about the LA market had big names going to the Rangers as recently as yesterday.

Completely agree.
I don’t see how MJH has any special knowledge of the situation.

Yeah
Jorge Arangure’s Twitter updates the last few days have had the Rangers figured in prominently and he ought to do what’s happening on the ground down there better than anyone. MJH has been known to hyperbolize in the past, so until I see something from the Latin gurus I’m not going to panic just yet.

I trust in BA's reporting a lot more than MJH's speculation
BA has already said we’re likely to get a nice Latin FA haul with at least one big name in Profar, and probably two more in Perdomo and Sardinas. I doubt that so much has changed in the past 48 hours as to completely reverse our situation.
by naropean on Jul 2, 2009 11:05 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
How old is the BA report?
Was it written based on info from before the first of June? Hicks’ financial situation and thus the Rangers’ financial situation has changed since then, unfortunately.

Are there any more reports on him?
Throws 100+ FBs with ok secondary stuff…sounds like a certain Happy pitcher I know.
I wonder what Feliz would get right now if he were a free agent?

The Cuban Feliz. I had heard he defected but google let me down…no official news had leaked yet.

Plus he seems to have some maturity issues on the mound
Any kid that throws 102 has an uber-high ceiling and deserves to be chased, but it sounds like he’s far from being a polished pitcher who can immediately be slotted into the ML roto.
Of course, not like that bothers the Red Sox right now. They’ve only got 7 big-league ready starters.

I'm curious
Couldn’t Hicks make some of his shares of the rangers (or his ownership group) publicly traded shares? Didn’t the Indians do something similar earlier this decade?

I personally think
every team should do it. There’s a lot of fans out there that would like to own a certain amount of shares of a team.

Publically trading shares
would mean that you have to disclose all sorts of things taht privately held companies don’t.
Also, it would make eventually selling the club more difficult.

Publicly selling the shares also likely wouldn't bring in as much as
selling them to one buyer would.

Jeff Wilson:
A baseball source confirmed that the Rangers spent “at least $2.5 million” to sign a handful of prospects from Latin America on Thursday. It is the club’s policy to not release the names of the players signed until they have passed physicals.

$2.5 million
This would fit the presumed prices of the 3 guys BA had us in on: Profar (already confirmed), Perdomo, and Sardinas.
