The ball comes off his bat so hard... he's going to make Rangers fans not miss Mark Teixeira all that much.
An anonymous scout, talking about Justin Smoak. Kevin Goldstein's column today also has a lot of stuff on Blake Beavan, who is described as being a big guy who should eat a lot of innings, but not a TORP.

Hopefully they can promote him soon
I’d love to see him in the lineup soon.I think he’s the type of hitter who could be a shot inthe arm to the 1B/DH situation.

I don’t know how long we can keep Davis in the majors before his confidence is completely destroyed. It’s so damn sad to watch.

He's still not hitting great
But he’s doing a hell of a lot better than he was about a month ago when he was striking out in every AB and couldn’t make contact with anything. If that didn’t completely destroy his confidence, then I don’t leaving him up right now would. I think the “Send him down for his confidence” thing is done, but now we have to ask if its best for the team to keep him up in the Majors now which is a separate question.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

No, he’s not.
He shits his pants every night and is currently rocking a 2 for 18.

I
don’t think Davis shitting his pants every night plays well in the room.
I also believe OBP is more important than Slug% but OPS trumps both and his OPS has dropped every month (if gossamer’s numbers are accurate).
The kid was given the position based on his play last year, stunk it up in spring training and is not pulling his weight in the regular season. Not pulling his weight is being kind. The kid is drowning.
This team has a legitiimate chance to win the AL West in a league where a true juggernaut has yet to emerge meaning it’s time to win.
I cannot wait to see the line-up card tomorrow night and Saturday.

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

Drabek
It’s this stuff that makes me wistful about him:
One scout who recently saw him there walked away impressed, observing, “He’s significantly smoother now, and I really like him; he’s going 95-96 mph in the first inning, and that curveball is a big-time hammer with a great arm stroke.” Drabek’s smallish frame and injury history contribute to the trouble many have figuring out exactly which direction his path will take him, but the scout saw him succeeding in a variety of roles. “He really could be anything,” the scout surmised, “I could see him starting, I could see him relieving… he could have a lot of different careers, but they’re all good ones.”

I wanted us to draft that kid so bad.

High School Champ
I saw him play SS in the 5A State Championship game in Round Rock. He lead off with a HR. I wanted us to take him also. He and Porcello top my all-time regret list.
by 3Bagger on Jul 2, 2009 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Porcello's a whole different animal, imo, cause he just wanted SO much more money.
So, while I agree I wish we would’ve picked Porcello, it’s hard for me to call it a regret when I’m not sure we had the $$$ to get ’er done.
Guys like Drabek could’ve been had for right around what we paid for Kiker.
Ugh.
Diamond over Jered Weaver. ($$$ come into play here too, though)
Kiker over Drabek.
Meyer over Kazmir.

Cash for Porcello
I sorta see it this way.
1. In 2007 Hicks had enough money to go look for a soccer investment.
2. Porcello was risky, but every scout called him “Can’t Miss.” They were right. His entire signing bonus was less than one year of Padilla. So, it’s all relative.
3. Winning makes a team money. Evidence: The Rangers recent slump has started to show-up at the box office too.
4. Old people like me make list like these.
5. Overall I’m satisfied with our farm system, so no big complaints.

A can't miss HS pitching prospect?
Uh, yah. No.
There was some bust potential.
He was a really, really good prospect, but he was nowhere near can’t miss.
Josh Beckett was as close as I think we’re gonna get to a can’t miss HSPP anytime soon, and even he had some question marks.

Wasn't really ranking them. Just a list off the top of my head.
I suppose Donald Harris over Frank Thomas and John Johnson over Todd Helton were pretty big, too.
I was pretty pissed with the Mayberry pick, though I did my best to talk myself into it (all those tools!!!), and there wasn’t anyone else I was super wanting at the time (my shadow pick at the time was Mark Pawelek- Ugh…) so I didn’t take it all that hard.

My draft regret list (at the time, not hindsight picks) from this decade
1. Meyer/Kazmir
2. Mayberry/Ellsbury, etc
3. Kiker/Drabek (and it was just a shame that Lincecum and Scherzer went right before them. Daniels said they would have taken Lince
4.Diamond/Elbert, Hughes
As a matter of disclosure, I wasn’t too psyched about the Danks pick until the Sinisi pick cheered me up.

I would have loved for them to take Drew or Weaver in ‘04 or Hochevar or someone like that in ’05 or Porcello in ’07, but that’s a different category. Those guys above weren’t even more expensive.
