What kind of pitches are the Rangers looking at when they’re ahead in the count? How about when they’re behind? What percentage of 2-2 pitches go for strikes?… How many for balls? What percentage is swung at? What percentage is taken?

Is there a way to find out this information?

our issue

IMO is swinging at bad pitches in good hitters counts. This team sees more 2-0, 2-1, 3-1 offspeed stuff than any team I’ve seen. And they hack away.

Honestly, Adam

I don’t remember your specific reaction or that you had a disapproving tone at all but I do remember Snark moping around.

The game was a grind and I disagreed with a lot of the strategy employed but the good guys broke the losing streak and a batter that was struggling seemed to have a breakthrough moment.

I still don’t know how this team is doing it and with just a little help (JD, get off your ass, stop worrying about where this organization’s prospects are going to be ranked by Baseball America next year and then get a fucking RH bat that tortures leftys/ gets on base) they could make a run at a division title in an AL that does not feature an unbeatable juggernaut.

Murphy now has an OBP of .368

which is highest on the team.

Murphy – .368 – Bats L
MY – .365 (2nd highest) – Bats R
Hamilton – Bats L
Kinsler – Bats R
Blalock – Bats L

I think that should be our top 5 hitters every game and 6-9 changes depending on who’s playing.

What do you guys think?

if you look at what Murph has done recently against lefties

he is 6 for 18 since june 1st with well over a .400 OBP against them. He was 1 for his first 18, but to be fair, he has been hitting them much, much better recently.

Or just use that lineup when righties pitch

Keep Kinsler leadoff against Lefties, he’s hitting .333 BA and .392 OBP while having a .216 BA and .298 OBP against righties.

Murphy has a .298 BA and .379 OBP against righties and .194 BA and .302 OBP.

Kinsler and Hamilton should flip flop vs. righties

Kinz is rocking a .698 OPS against RHP’s this year, and third is a much less critical spot in the lineup than any of the other four.

OT Question

My brother and I have the option of going to the Rangers-Royals game on either Friday or Saturday. Friday, it is Grienke vs. Feldman, and Saturday is Millwood vs. either Chen or Ponson. Do we go see a great matchup (Friday) or go to see the game that the Rangers have a better chance of winning (Saturday)

It's possible

to have 22 out of 34 Game Scores of 50+ and not be rewarded with a lot of wins however if you have a lot of wins and that kind of Game Score ratio, chances are that Fips, Dips or the dreaded PAP metric (ask Snark for a dissertation on PAP and you will be asleep within 5 minutes) you’re at least a pretty good pitcher.

Ted Lilly has been a damn good pitcher since 2007 and the Rangers f’d up by not signing him.

Notables on the list…

McGwire’s shot off Randy Johnson in Seattle – damn was that ball killed.
My boy Canseco’s upper tank shot in the Skydome.
Fielder’s bomb off Whitside and the Rangers in ’93 on the roof in Detroit.

  1. Was Mantle’s shot in NY in ’63 – the ball he said was the hardest he ever hit.

Stargell hit one out of Dodger Stadium

in May ’73 that was one of the longest ever hit there. It went over the blue pavillion roof in RF. That was pre-cable so no video exists.

Can’t believe they didn’t show Reggie Jax taking Charlie Hough into the dark seats at Yankee Stadium in the ’77 World Series. It used to be 417 to CF in old Yankee Stadium so that ball was pushing 500 feet.

trade question

I was talking to my friend at the game tonight and thought of this, as he was saying he wanted to get Duke, I know the pirates are desperate to trade Snell and his contract, and would also look at offers for a lot of others, so what do you think it would take to get Snell, Duke and Freddy Sanchez in a deal that we center around Nelson Cruz, plus two or three prospects, maybe a Nellie, Kiker, Tim Smith, and a Vallejo/Arias/Lemon type, who would say no, would you give up Nellie in a deal like that? I am a huge Nellie fan but Hammy belongs in right and the OF would be ok without him, and Sanchez could play all four IF positions, plus the two COF positions and be a very viable RH DH? so what do you think?

by blueballlefty on Jul 20, 2009 11:58 PM CDT reply actions

Few things...

1) No you don’t give up Nellie for that.
2) Why would the Rangers want Sanchez?
3) Snell’s contract isn’t that bad.
4) Why can’t Hamilton or Cruz play in LF?

"The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance."-Socrates

by slc ranger on Jul 21, 2009 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

well when a GM

comes out and says its a shitty contract, I imagine he thinks he made a mistake, the reason I pick Cruz (and I am a big Nellie fan and always have been) is for me I took him and Murphy, and analyzed what I thought there trade value compared to there on field productivity and figured Nellie has much much sexier numbers and a much much higher trade value where as the production drop off with him or Byrd in left isn’t that great. Sanchez he adds some decent obp/ops splits that this team could use, plus he has a ton of versatility that Wash has stated in the past week he would like to add to the bench

Use of the terms “this things” and “the show”.

Lots of fun to watch this one. This thing is 8-2 at games I am at. Even when chris davis was in the show they had a good record as long as I was there to support this thing. If this thing gets to the playoffs it will be because I spent more time at RBPIA over the next couple months. Get feliz to the show and me to support this thing and this thing could go to the ship.
