Was the Baines for Sosa Trade the Worst in Rangers History?
Anyone have and thoughts on this or other bad Rangers Trades over the Years, I would be interested to hear what others think was the worst, for me this was by far the worst trade, although at the time (and i remember it well) this seemed like a good trade for the Rangers, though now in hind sight we all know what a bust it was, though it did take a few years to be seen as a bad trade, what are some other ones you remember as being bad for the Rangers?

this should be filed along with the “who won the juan gonzalez trade”, “dome TBIA” and “sososorry ioorange” fanposts.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

i kinda like
the sossosososososorry iorange posts…it’s kinda like the dot race of LSB. It’s inane and completely irrelevant to anything else that’s going on, and yet, I can’t not watch it.

that trade wasn't THAT bad
it took 4 seasons for sosa to be any good, it took 4 seasons for wilson alverez to be any good. by then i assume sosa signed/resigned with the sox, who then traded him to the cubs for george bell. that sosa for bell trade seems to be a worse trade involving sosa.
baines was a solid veteran who had several solid years after that trade, just none with the rangers (he had a good 1990 with texas before being traded for nothing)
Michael Young > Steve Garvey.
Nelson Cruz >Greg Nettles.
Elvis Andrus > Willie McGee.
Ian Kinsler > Darryl Strawberry.
i dunno, that's just really random.

Darling and Terrell for Mazzili was worse
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 21, 2009 11:37 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I was just about to post that one
Ron Darling was a solid pitcher throughout the ’80s. I remember being horrified looking at the back of one of his cards and seeing “Drafted #1,9th (Texas)”

Darling for Mazilli
I’m too young to remember that trade (I was 3 when it happened). Anyone here remember what the backstory was? It wasn’t like the 1982 Rangers were ever going to be any good – they couldn’t have thought that Mazzilli was going to make/break the club, could they have?
Go Rice Owls!
by JBImaknee on Jul 21, 2009 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nope
This was ownership at the time deciding that the Rangers needed a left fielder, and figuring that the top two pitching prospects in the system was a small price to pay to get one.
A couple of people in the front office resigned over that, I believe, and there was a scouting meeting going on when the trade was announced. Supposedly, the scouting director, upon hearing of the trade, said, “Meeting’s over. Let’s go to the bar and drink.”
And of course, Mazzili promptly announced upon getting here that left field was an “idiot’s position,” and sucked, and didn’t want to be in Texas, and the Rangers promptly got rid of him.

Ugh.
My childhood may have been much different had those two been on the team (well, at least the Rangers wouldn’t have been a sad joke). Was Eddie Chiles the owner then?

Eddie Chiles was the owner then and he was really, really bad.

Darling & Terrell (combined 247 wins) were fairly average and hung up a lot of wins
on some good teams but neither one of them were aces, more like # 3 or # 4 starting pitchers. Playing for those early 80’s Ranger teams (one of the bleakest times ever) would have been a tough road. Darling seemed to be overrated because he went to Yale, played for the Mets, seemed intelligent and was overly media-friendly.
Lee Mazzilli (who was overrated because he played in NYC) playing for the Rangers in 1982 was one of the worst fits, ever.

That trade is easily #1 on my worst list...
Giving up young pitching, trading for a middling player, and to top it off, having us be a laughing stock league-wide for the whole thing.

To me
the AG/CYoung trade is by far, the worst trade ever made by the Texas Rangers.

Remember
that one good month of Dave Hostetler?
What about LP sucking dick in the first half of the season and then turning his season around with one good week and becoming one of the best hitters in the AL in the second half of 1982?
Remember the pic (in maybe the Dallas Times Herald?) of some players wearing bags over their heads (a la NO Saints fans) in the dugout next to Zimmer?
How about Doug Flynn rocking a .221 obp in 283 plate appearances?
How about Tanana & Honeycutt combining for a 12-35 record.
How about the overly hyped (by Mark Holtz who had seen him in AAA Denver) Randy Bass?
How about that 12-27 start to the season?
How the hell did that team win 64 games??!?!?!

Sosa
It took Sosa 5 years after the trade to post an OPS above .800 when he hit .300/.339/.545 in 105 games in 1994. This of course after he was traded again to the Cubs…
It wasn’t a good trade, but I doubt Sosa would have stuck around regardless considering the outfielders we had at the time.

worse trades from just the past 10 years
in 2003 ryan ludwick was traded for ricardo rodriguez and shane spencer.
in 2006 adrian gonzalez and chris young (hasn’t been impressive last year and a half) were traded for adam eaton and akinori otsuka
2002 rangers trade travis hafner and aaron myette for einar diaz and ryan drese
1997 dean palmer for tom goodwin
2000 the rangers trade esteban loaiza for mike young

Also
along the lines of the Michael Young deal, spinning Diaz for Chris Young, though it was sandwiched by horrible deals, probably belongs on a list like this as well.

Ludwick was terrible for 3 years in Cleveland. He was DFA’d in 2005 and spent all of 2006 in the minors after signing as a minor league free agent. He was decent in 2007 in St Louis, amazing last year, and back to decent again this year.
Dean Palmer doesn’t really fit your own criteria. Even still he was a free agent after 1997 and we had the next big thing in Tatis (oops) at third base. (Palmer resigned in KC as a free agent in 98 before moving on to Detroit.)

I'm not sure
but he may mean it in the other direction, like, Goodwin was a nice piece on a team that turned around and won two divisions. He kind of sucked in ’99 though.

Can we count
Kinsler for Walker?
In the time that I’ve avidly been following the team early 90s through the present, the only one that immidiately made me feel ill was the Young & AGon trade. That, and trading away Warren Morris…I was pretty sure he was destined from greatness.

i tend to discount that one because it happened during the fall semester of my freshman year in college, one of the best times of my life, and while i remember immidiately hating the deal, I read about it while hanging out in a pretty girl’s dorm room. If only all of my painful Rangers memories could be alliviated through positive associations…

in fact
its funny how many distinct associations I have with Rangers trades. I remember reading about the Morris/Loazia trade while sitting with my family in the courtyard of an embassy suites (which, for some reason, I loved as a kid) during a summer vacation. I remember reading about the Bell/Mateo trade while I was visiting TCU the summer before my senior year in HS. And it what was probably the most surreal moment of my childhood Rangers fandom, I remember when my dad came in and woke me up one morning by telling me the Rangers had traded for Jose Canseco (with whom I share a birthday, and those things matter to little kids) and I was incredulous. The icing on the cake was that we also had traded away Bobby Witt, who I hated because he took forever between pitches (such things also matter to little kids).
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
