a very good friend of mine is a Sox fan (he is actually from there)

and last night he asked me if it is bothersome that there seem to be 30-50% Red Sox games in our ballpark. If we keep winning, it does not bother me, as those pink hat wearing bandwagon jumping douchebags will get just the slight taste of disappointment that they’re missing out on by becoming a “super fan” of a team that’s at the top of the heap.

The Hoss got a little winded there at 85 pitches

But sitll, just an awesome outing.

Also don’t know if I’d call Jennings outstanding, but he got the job done.

Hopefully CJ’s arm doesn’t fall off now.

He’s been okay as a middle man this year.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 21, 2009 10:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He doesn't want to be a reliever.

It shows. He comes in with RISP and is just so blah. It’s almost like he comes out of the bullpen at 80% and thinks he has a bunch of innings and outs to get up to 100%. A reliever who only pitches one inning needs to bring 100% out of the pen.

by AceJC on Jul 21, 2009 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

whatever

he’s been great at his Middle Relief role, its nitpicking to try and find faults. I mean, the dude was a passable starter who’s now become a rather solid piece to use in the 6th and 7th of games… He’s certaintly better than Jamey Wright who was used in the exact same role last season

"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"

by blalock84 on Jul 21, 2009 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm going to disagree.

Wright had 5 more ER’s last year then Jennings does at this point in the season. Jennings allows almost 55%of his IR to score and Wright only let 38% score. Wright had a higher ERA because he got put into two blow out games and left to finish them.

by AceJC on Jul 21, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

So I would say Wright and Jennings are about the same.

And Wright wasn’t very good at all last year, I agree with that. But no way is JJ been “great” at middle relieving and a solid part of the pen. I’d take O’Day, Grilli, Holland (if that’s where he’s at) over him any time in the 6th and 7th.

by AceJC on Jul 21, 2009 11:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Grilli over Jennings?

Any particular reason? They’ve been about equally effective this year.

by Adam J. Morris on Jul 21, 2009 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Grilli would be because

He only lets about 28% of IR score. If you’re coming in during the 6th or 7th, then you’re probably coming in to relieve a starter who is struggling and will almost always get inherited runners. Grilli has only allowed 4 of 18 to score. Much better then Jennings allowing 10 of 19 to score.

by AceJC on Jul 21, 2009 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My opinion

I cant watch Jennings pitch

he doesnt trust his fb (for good reason) and his slider is most likely a ball

he falls behind hitters way too often and goes to 3-2 counts too often

I just personally cant watch him due to the way he pitches

Bay threw it to the cutoff guy, but the cutoff man was positioned near the pitcher’s mound.

Yep

cutoff man was way off line, actually the right play by Bay.

wouldve liked

for hunter to atleast start the 7th, if he lets somebody on then u can take him out but he had a reasonable pitch count

also with a 3 run lead id have let oday or another bullpen pitcher try to close out the game so cj is available for tomorrow. now id guess both oday and wilson wont pitch tomorrow and they’re our 2 most dependable guys going

go here to view my blog: http://dirtfromd.blogspot.com

by studcrackers on Jul 21, 2009 11:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

In the 7th it was still a one run game so a hanging breaking ball could very easily tie the game up. I don’t have the stats in front of me but Hunter gives up a fair amount of flyballs so the HR is a concern. He had allowed a run in the 6th and our bullpen has been lights out this year and recently in particular.

And you can’t make decisions about the bullpen looking forward. I agree I would have liked to save CJ with a 3 run lead but technically that is a save situation and these days whenever there is a save situation a team brings in their closer 99.9% of the time. But you can’t be thinking about saving a guy for the next day because what if today is a blowout or we lose and you don’t need CJ?

I was fine with taking Hunter out there

He looked to be wearing down in the sixth inning, even though he was only at 85 pitches after six. Sometimes you have to trust your eyes and my eyes told me the Sox were starting to make better contact. He had pitched six good innings against a quality team and it was probably best to leave it at that. If the sixth inning had been more like the five before it, then I’d definitely put him out for the seventh.

Blalock in July -

Won the Angels game with a walk-off HR (in a game where he hit two bombs); hit two-run HR off Kazmir in 3-1 win; hit another HR off Morrow to swing momentum back to Texas in the only game they defeated the M’s in that series; had two RBI v. first game with Boston with two hits (first hit got team off schneid, second hit gave them the lead) and then got team off to 2-0 lead with two run single off Josh Beckett followed by another single in the 7th to push AJ to 3B with no outs.

Hank Blalock has singlehandedly carried this team in July.

All that proves...

is that he is finally showing the normal improvement that he has in the second half, but it by now means that he is single handedly carrying this team. Offense is only 1/3 of this team. Decent SP, excellent defense, and a shut down BP has been the formula that is keeping this team in games all season, because the ENTIRE OFFENSIVE production of the team has been a GI-NORMOUS bag of suck!!

has been over .800 for almost the entire season and he’s on a pace to hit 35 bombs, maybe more.

The .800 ops was skewed by

having a .550ish SLG, IIRC. That’s was because the majority of his hits were long balls, and all he could do was swing for the fences.

IDK and guess no one really will till he’s traded, I don’t think we would add the salary plus lose those guys anyways, I think if we controlled him for 2 years at 6 and 7 million we would be ALL over it

how many of those HR’s were affected by BABIP?

homers aren’t a ball in play, so they’re not counted in BABIP. But you understand that a .350 BABIP is unsustainable, right? And his .359 OBP is buoyed by that unsustainable BABIP? And so when his BABIP regresses, he will have what you have stated is an unacceptable OBP?

Maybe in prospects,

But according to Cot’s he is owed less that $5.75MM this year and $9MM next year on a club option. Financially definitely more affordable, right?

Don't do it.

Stick with the plan, unless you are able to do something using A- or B+ prospects. Too many holes on offense. This off-season let Kinsler and Hamilton straighten themselves out, find out what you have in Feliz and Holland the 1st half of next year, see if CD/Smoak figure it out, and maybe do something next July.

Never argue with a fool. Onlookers might not be able to tell you apart.

Pere Cot's
4 years/$15M (2006-09), plus 2010 club option
signed extension with Cleveland 8/06
replaced 1 year/$0.4062M deal signed 3/06

$1M signing bonus

06:$0.75M, 07:$2.75M, 08:$3.75M, 09:$5.75M,
10:$8M club option ($1M buyout)
price of 2010 option increases to:
$9M with Cy Young in 2008 (met) or 2009

If I’m doing the math right, he would be owed less than $11.9MM for Aug/Sept/October ’09 and 2010.

Lee doesn't have a no-trade clause

I’m afraid Halladay won’t come here. It’s also possible that Halladay and his agent will decide they won’t waive it unless they get a new contract. Hence the new July 28th deadline by the Jays.

if they want a deal centered around Fernando Martinez, how far off is Borbon from that at this point I realize he is a little older, but he is just as major league ready, not saying this is enough, but maybe Borbon and Smoak, plus Kiker would be enough? what else would it take

but i would make smoak unavailable unless it is him plus an inferior package. With the state of our hitting, Smoak is THE most important prospect we have

umm I disagree

I think hitters are much easier to develop than pitchers, how much has this lineup suffered since we lost Tex, not that much if you ask me, sure the O has struggled this year, but most of that has come from our youth, and I fully expect that in his first two years Smoak will have at least 1 month that will be Davisesque (circa:’09) Smoak will be very good, but he will not be the be all end all

I agree that they are worth more

lets be honest offensive numbers are really SEXY, and everyone wants the next Pujols, Manny, Longoria, Hamilton, but there is a much great chance that Smoak becomes the next Blalock or Lyle Overbay, Salty or Carlos Pena for that matter, would you rather have Blalock, Davis and Smoak, with the possibility that Smoak never reaches Davis’s numbers from last year or trade him (plus others) for a guy that has been a top3 pitcher for three years

by blueballlefty on Jul 22, 2009 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's dumb

pitchers bust way, way, way, way more often than hitters. Could Smoak suddenly lose his discipline in the majors? Maybe, but it’s far more likely one of our pitchers lose their fastball.

Smoak has everything you look for in a position prospect – avg, power, discipline, defense. He’s a better bet to succeed than anyone in the system

What's the difference

between losing a 3-1 game with Roy Halladay on the mound vs. losing a 8-1 game with Matt Harrison on the mound?

Smoak is one of the few players with the skillset to buoy a very, very mediocre lineup. I’d rather not trade a position player if I can at all help it, especially given the state of our lineup and the fact that we’ll lose both Blalock and Jones next year.

At this point, in regards to Fernando Martinez, all I can tell you read some scouting reports. Googling his name will give you a better idea of how different he is than Borbon.

I think if you look up

you will see Cave say he would make Smoak unavailable and my argument was for us (particularly in this park) Smoak will be much easier to replace than say a Feliz, or Holland would be especially getting Roy in return. I guess to make it more clear, I’m saying I would rather take my chances trying to replace Smoak in this ballpark and have Halladay, Feliz, and Holland here were if only one of Holland or Feliz pan out our pitching staff is looking really really good

come again

show me some of his “power performance” I also thought that would be the big difference in the two but after looking at the numbers thats not the case at all, he might have slightly higher power numbers than Borbon, but nothing in his minor league stats show me he will hit 25+ HR’s in the big leagues, and I thought he was playing center for the mets when Beltran was out

by blueballlefty on Jul 22, 2009 1:05 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Martinez is strictly a left fielder

and he hit for more power than Borbon despite being 2.5 years younger. That’s where the power projection comes from. He also slugged .540 in the minors this year, that’s where power performance comes in.

Martinez is more Justin Smoak than Julio Borbon. He’s what we should hope Engel Beltre turns into.

Martinez

has played more games in CF than any other spot in his career, but I’m not trying to debate Martinez with you, I’m trying to say that for some reason the Jays are interested in a young CF and we have one of the better ones in baseball, why not see if Holland/Borbon/Kiker gets it done? I honestly don’t think we will give up the prospects plus the money to get it done, and can’t say I disagree, I think that if Halladay had two years left at 6 and 7 million we would pull the trigger in a heartbeat and he would be ours, or if he cost Kiker, Moreland, Arias, and Weiland we would pull the trigger in a heartbeat but not both

by blueballlefty on Jul 22, 2009 1:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

They're not interested in a young CF

as much as they’re interested in the power that he provides. They’re clearly targeting a position player that can be a cornerstone, preferably a corner IF, a corner OF or a SS. Halladay would cost a lot more than your package that you suggested. Really, google before you post is usually a good policy, cause at least 90% of the time, all your posts are just a stream of ignorant, poorly punctuated thoughts.

I know it's en vogue to bitch

when we’re winning but three things that bothered me tonight.

1) Why is our best hitter for the last two months hitting 7th in the lineup? Lot’s of people have labeled Murphy as a 4th outfielder but no one on this entire team has better numbers than he does in last eight weeks. Why are we giving him less plate appearances than Byrd, Jones, and tonight notwithstanding Blalock?

2) Jennings for Hunter in the 7th. Yeah Hoss kinda struggled with two out in the 6th but the bullpen has been taxed and the kid had only thrown 85 pitches. They’ve shown a ton of faith by giving the ball to Holland and letting him go out there and do his thing. He’s struggled but improved for it. Why does Hunter not deserve that same opportunity, especially in a situation it would behoove the team to rest the bullpen.

3) Wilson for three days in a row. CJ was great. All hail CJ. As much as I like the fact that he’s willing and able to go out there for three days in a row isn’t this the same damn thing that led to Fx2’s problems? O’Day didn’t throw many pitches in the 8th and he should have just gone ahead and pitched the 9th too. Winning tonight was important, but not more so than putting more stress on CJ’s arm. I really hate the way Washington mismanages his bullpen.

by Hull Fan on Jul 21, 2009 11:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with alot of that..

Murphy should be moved up to lead off against righties and then put Elvis at lead off for righties. Ian and Ham 3 rd and 4th.
I liked Hunter coming out in the 7th. If he would have stayed in and gave up 2 runs and left with 2 more on base, we would have crucified Wash for leaving him in too long and justified it by pointing to him looking gasses in the 6th.
I think CJ had 3 days straight in him. Team is off Thurs and he is for sure off for tomorrow. Padilla has been good for 6-7 innings at least (unless he stubs his toe or catches whatever Frankie and Omar has) He was planning on closing this one out and winning it and hoping Padilla with Eddie/Eyre/Grilli can platoon together and close it out (Or we’re up 10-1, hoping the Rangers have really got some offense back)

by AceJC on Jul 21, 2009 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hunter should have gone out for the 7th

with Wash knowing if he allows a baserunner he’s done. There really was no reason not to put him back out there.

As for CJ yeah he looks okay for now but why take that chance when you’ve already seen what pitching three days in a row to a hard thrower has done to Frankie Frank. Two days off in a row don’t really make up for three days of use in a row, imho.

by Horns130 on Jul 22, 2009 2:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I never said it was.

But when you look at a variety of other stats, it’s hard to make an argument that the pitching is what is much better as opposed to the defense.

The Rangers are allowing the exact same number of home runs per nine innings as in 2008 — 1.1 HR/9.

The strikeouts per nine are actually down from last year, from 6.0 SO/9 to 5.7 SO/9.

One big area of improvement for the pitching staff has been cutting down on walks; they’re allowing 0.5 BB/9 less in ’09 than ’08.

Last year, the Rangers’ BABIP against was .317; this year, it’s down to .284.

I’m not saying that the pitching isn’t slightly better; I’m just saying that while the pitching has slightly improved, the defense is the difference here.
