MLB 3 team trades?
As the trade deadline approaches it got me to thinking. Why are there not more 3 teams trades in baseball?
It seems the NBA is really the king of multiple team trades. Is it because in the NBA they can trade draft picks that makes it easier?
Honestly, with Buchholz going tonight I was thinking of a way for the Rangers to still get him. I am probably one of the few that thinks JD is doing a good job. I think he checks every possibility to make the Rangers better. Sure some trades backfire.
How about
Boston gets: Halladay and Taylor Teagarden
Toronto gets: Masterson or Bowden, Hagadone or Bard + Poveda, Boscan, Arias or Vallejo
Texas gets: Buchholz and Will Middlebrooks
This is just to get the conversation started. Would it work for the 3 teams? Toronto may not be getting enough. How would you fix this trade, could it work and why are there not more 3 team trades in baseball.
Put on your GM hat and let's discuss!!

It's because the complexities of the salary cap in the NBA quite often necessitates bringing in a third party to make all the salaries match up.
How could it have anything to do with draft picks?
And, no, that three team deal makes negative sense.
Teagarden, Poveda, Boscan and Arias for Buchholz + another guy for some reason? I can’t comment on the level of stupid involved in this proposal without being mean and just delving straight into insult, so suffice it to say that it’s not a very well thought out idea at all.

draft picks
How could draft picks not be valuable? If Boston or New York always threw a #1 pick into trade offers (like the Mavs) then that eventually hurts there farm? Please explain how draft picks have nothing to do with it (if they could be traded)

How would draft picks have anything to do WITH THE QUESTION YOU SPECIFICALLY ASKED, not whether they'd have trade value in general.

draft picks
All I’m saying is that:
Would more 3 team trades get done in MLB if they could trade draft picks. I stated are more 3 team trades done in the NBA, because they CAN trade draft picks.

Yes, and I stated why there are more three team deals in the NBA: The complexities of the salary cap, which mandates salaries match in trades between teams above the cap.
The idea that trading draft picks would somehow influence the number of the 3 team deals is illogical.
Think about it.
Why the fuck would that lead to more three team deals?
What about the specific act of being able to trade picks would make teams want to suddenly start making three team deals?
I’ll give you a hint, the answer is: It fucking wouldn’t.

Salary Cap
I agree with you on the Salary Cap in the NBA!! Not debating that. I do debate that trading draft picks in baseball help more trades get done. I don’t know if it would make more 3 team trades or not, but it would help trades.
Would your rather have a #1 pick from Texas or Poveda? Trading draft picks is another commodity to trade.
I just want to ask why more 3 team trades CANNOT get done. For the record (which I know your not big on) if I was Boston I would not trade Buchholz……….

Can't trade draft picks in baseball
Here’s an item discussing the feasibility of doing so
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=1383197&type=columnist
However, it simply is forbidden. One of the good jobs JD does is to not violate League rules.

just for you DA Tron
soxvsstripes great trade proposal
david wright for mike lowell (with money), michael bowden, lars anderson, ryan kalish, brad penny
and some of the comments:
it’s fascinating that you can be so dumb to think that this is a good idea, but smart enough to operate a computer and formulate sentences.
i think it’s time to shut down the internet after reading this one.
it’s had a nice run.
NO exaggeration…this could very well be the stupidest thing I’ve ever read.
Why would any team want to give up a franchise player for crap? Teams that are in the playoff chase have to overpay for talent, which is usually for free agents to be. They don’t toss in Penny and Dreck for one of the most valuable players in baseball. Now if you said, maybe the Mets would be dumb enough to get raped, and Theo should embarrass himself by making that phone call. Fine. But to say that trade somehow helps the Mets is ludicrous.
In fact, I would not be surprised if your embarrassing effort to play GM, so to speak, resulted in the slaughtering of brain cells of anyone who read it. Please, I beg you, take down this blog so that no one else will be harmed from merely reading your cruel attempt at fitting in. Thank you.
and then the guy closes comments on that post lol
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

an idea
rangers get cliff lee and roy halladay
indians get padilla and scutaro
blue jays get blalock and shin-soo choo
Michael Young > Steve Garvey.
Nelson Cruz >Greg Nettles.
Elvis Andrus > Willie McGee.
Ian Kinsler > Darryl Strawberry.
i dunno, that's just really random.

No way. I tell the Injuns to throw in Sizemore if they want Padilla.
I mean, come on, it’s Padilla.

Please comment
thedirkatron, please comment on the level of stupid involved or better yet, make the trade better, so it won’t be stupid. Oh wait, I forget you don’t ever throw ideas out, so people can’t shoot your opinions down.
In the post it said the trade was to get the conversation started. Reply with a way to make it unstupid or shut up!!

I throw out ideas all the time.
This one’s just kind of dumb.
Look at it from the other teams’ perspectives.
The bottom line is there’s no way we could get Buchholz for any sort of reasonable package, and inserting ourselves into some convoluted 3-way deal where Boston gets Halladay isn’t going to change that.
Look at what we’re giving up versus what we’re giving.
Why would Boston just throw in their own equivalent of Tea, Boscan, Poveda and Arias and keep Middlebrooks and their ridiculous stud major league ready potential TORG starter?

Buchholz
I don’t see the process as a dumb idea.
We both agree Texas cannot get Buchholz for a package straight up with the Red Sox that both teams would agree on.
However, in the 3 team trade Boston is getting Halladay and Teagarden for Buchholz and the others. Sure Boston could take Texas out of the mix, but they won’t receive a Teagarden type from Toronto. I am just thinking of a way Texas could possibly end up with Buchholz by sweeting their pot for Halladay.
I am not saying this is a perfect trade, but simply let’s discuss ways we could squeeze something out of the trade market by getting creative.

toronto is not trading Halladay to Boston
something like that within your division rarely ever happens

3+ team deals rarely happen in the MLB
why? who knows, but i would think being uncapped would have something to do with it
if we could suddenly trade draft picks, there wouldnt be a rash of “OMG WE CAN NOW HAVE THREE TEAM DEALS” — i mean its not like pitt would have traded their 1st rd, cash considerations and adam laroche’s expiring contract for clay buchholtz

Agree
Pitt would not do that, but would they have rather got Boston’s #2 draft pick in 2010 instead of the prospect. Maybe, have to factor in money to sign the player and all that, but chances are stocking draft picks could help a Pittsburgh out more so than Boston or New York year to year.
OK, let’s scrap the draft picks….what about this. A deal is almost done with Toronto and Philly. However, Toronto is not high on Happ, but would take Kiker to get the deal done. Texas decides they like Happ and would give Kiker for him, so it ends up being basically a 3 team deal. Why can’t or doesn’t this happen more.
Not saying this is a good or bad deal, just why doesn’t the practice happen more. Dirkatron said the salary cap, which I totatlly can agree with. Not trying to get into if this is a good or bad deal, just why this could not be done more.

from callis chat
joey hernandez (oakland)
How about this trade: SD gets Mazzaro, Donaldson, Henry Rodriguez, Gonzalez, Simmons and Carter plus prospects from Braves, Atlanta gets Peavy and A’s get AGON and Escobar. Sounds good to me
Jim Callis (2:14 PM)
That’s great for the Braves and Athletics, but terrible for the Padres.
