Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

52-41

I feel good.

I didn't know that I would now.

I was half-expecting, back on Sunday evening, that today would be #8 in a losing streak.

But four in a row, in impressive and resilient fashion.

Vicente Padilla, Frankie Francisco, and Eddie Guardado all sidelined with the flu, Darren O'Day and C.J. Wilson unavailable after pitching three straight days, and the Rangers allow just 1 run to the BoSox today with Dustin Nippert and Doug Mathis tag-teaming.

remarkable.

Ha this is funny

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sweetspot/0-4-91/Take-the-K-C—Managerial-Quiz-.html

As Joe Sheehan points out, Joakim Soria has pitched just twice since the July 9.

In the last game before the All-Star break, with the Royals losing 5-0 to the Red Sox, Soria pitched the eighth inning. And Tuesday night, he pitched the ninth inning of a game the Royals were losing to the Angels, 10-2.

That’s it. In the Royals’ last nine games, Soria has pitched in two games, both of them already lost when he entered. A few more salient facts:

    * The Royals have lost all nine of those games.
    * Of the seven losses in which Soria did not pitch, five included eighth-inning bullpen implosions.
    * Soria is the best reliever on the staff, by a whole lot.

I want you to think about that for a moment. Here you’ve got a team that has the worst run differential in the league, has now lost nine straight games and routinely gets hammered before that magical three-out save opportunity has a chance to rear its beautiful head.

Do you think, if you were managing that team, that you might get just a little bit creative? See if you could figure out a way to occasionally get your ace fireman into a close game?

If so, then I’m afraid you’ve just failed the Kansas City Managerial Quiz. You’ve failed, which means you are not eligible to join the ranks of an august club whose members include Tony Muser, Buddy Bell, Tony Pena, and the franchise’s newest and bestest intellectual powerhouse, Trey Hillman.

You should wear that rejection like a badge of pride.

I know complaining about Wash’s bullpen management is a favorite pasttime around here, but he has shown the ability to go against the “book” use Frankie or CJ for multi-innings saves. He even uses them regularly with 4 runs leads which is a non-save situation. I likeit when he goes for the win instead of waiting for it to come to him.

I was always kind of thinking 90-92...

but it’s looking more like it may take around 95.

So let's say the number is 94...

(And that has been the average number needed to at least make the playoffs from ‘98-’08, fwiw.)

That means we have to go 42-27 (.609). Only 30 (43.5%) of our remaining 69 games are at home.

Not looking likely.

We really need Anaheim, Boston, or NYY to really tank.

To make the playoffs.

The average number of wins needed to make the playoffs (division or WC) from the ALW in ‘98-’08 was 93.6.

Here’s what’s needed given other totals:

93: .594
92: .580
91: .565
90: .551

We are currently a .560 team, on pace for 90-91 wins.

But that is with having played a much greater percentage of our games at home so far.

it’s different people every week usually doing the flag and they just FedEx it to an alum that’s close to wherever college gameday is that week.

Definitely takes a lot of coordination. This year I think TCU got their flag at about 4 or 5 college gamedays including one in Columbus, OH.

I was, of course worried before the game with Nippert starting> But when Lewin said Angel Hernandez was the umpire and favored pitchers that gave me some hope.

I thought Buchholz would be able to take advantgae of the wider zone but he didn’t. I was impressed with how the Ranger hitters were patient and made Buchhols throw alot of pitches.

I was equally impressed with how Nippert and Mathis worked both sides of the plate and took advantage of the liberal zone. Liberal in the sense that it was fair. Hernandez called the edges and even the elusive low strike.

where i could read worthless comment after worthless comment and actually enjoy it, whereas I would usually exit stage left immediately.

Right now, I’m just sitting here with a big shit-eating grin on my face and enjoying seeing random Ranger fans post generic comments about how happy they are. It makes me feel good.

AL West

Seems like it is a pretty strong division, contrary to popular opinion.

Somebody else can look up the stats, but LA and Texas have handled the East pretty well it seems, and the third place Seattle Mariners would be tied for the lead in the AL Central.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Please don't trade away the farm

to try to make a run this year. The offense is not ready, so adding a pitcher will not impact that. We are not “one piece away from getting over the top”.
You have to be near the top of the mountain before you get over it.
Let “your guys” get the team close, and then look to add that missing piece. A low-cost bat would be fine, but not Halladay or Lee, not now.
No Sosa-for-Baines type deals that kill the future and guarantee nothing for the now.

Never argue with a fool. Onlookers might not be able to tell you apart.

Feliz, Holland and Smoak

are minor league untouchables but everybody else is available.

This team is one solid OBP hitter who throttles leftys away from putting their ball on a post-season green where there are no obvious juggernauts in the AL.

Yes, you make a freaking trade to get better this year and if your minor league system is rated 3 or 4 (or lower) by Baseball America next off-season, you live with the consequences.

You don’t control when the window of opportunity is going to open or close and right now it’s popped back open.

Don’t be afraid to win.

I JUST got the james brown reference

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
