What on earth
are those horrible AL West teams doing in the wild card race? Don’t they know the AL West is terrible? Too bad the Rangers can’t beat good teams.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I don't think it is a given at all that the Wild Card comes out of the East
First, schedule strength: Boston, NY, and TB all have to play each other a lot more going forward. The loser of the West, on the other hand, really only has one tough opponent heavily scheduled (the other top West club). I’d rather the Rangers have 15 games left against Seattle and Anaheim than Tampa and New York.
Second, despite BtB’s little analysis a few weeks ago, I think that the first 3.5 months are more predictive than the little pre-season scenarios they came up with. Mostly because while those PECOTA etc have some predictive power, they’ve been demonstrably wrong about the Rangers, who represent the biggest wrench in the “Wild Card Will Come From The East, Again” assumption. (in addition to a chance to win the WC themselves, the Rangers doing well increase the probability that the Angels lose the division despite having a good record – almost an impossibility given the pre-season projections)
Go Rice Owls!
BP has it at..
…about 85% chance that the wild card team comes from the East.

I think Tampa at least gets the Wild Card
and I’m not going to dismiss their chances of winning the AL East.
Can’t remember if I heard it on MLB or ESPN but they said the Rays were on the verge of making a “major” deal. Not sure what they need but that’s a very smart front office/management team they have.
Kudos to AJM for printing the Wild Card Standings!!

I'm not sure anybody can second-guess too many
moves Tampa makes these days.
You also never know what’s disinformation either and if they’re trying to make Boston cough up somebody like Buchholz.

85% is more realistic
I’d put it probably at 75%. Both are far, far more realistic guesses than BtB’s 98% chance of the WC coming from the East.
Go Rice Owls!
That was before Boston's recent slide
If they re-ran the numbers now, it would probably be a fair amount lower than 98%.
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 23, 2009 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions
I don't know
Their analysis was heavily weighted towards their pre-season projections (whereas doesn’t BPs projection just extrapolate the rest of the season based on expected winning percentages). I doubt that they’d be affected that much by Boston’s recent slide, since something like 60% of their expected future performance was using pre-season guesses. As you pointed out, those pre-season projections were fundamentally wrong when interpreting the Rangers due to their defense.
Go Rice Owls!
Here
BP lists PECOTA weighted projections as well – they give the AL East a 96% chance of getting the Wild Card

Trust me
PECOTA is not having the greatest year….See Texas & Cleveland projections.

Percentagea
Isn’t there a pretty big issue with the odds if a five game slide can take the percentagesfrom almost 100 to 75 in a week.

he didn't say that those projections would have
been 75%.
but, as the season goes on, the BtB percentages rely less on the PECOTA and more on actual play
by kevinkinsler on Jul 23, 2009 11:50 AM CDT up reply actions
BtB focuses more on peripheral data than anything...
They use PECOTA and ZIPS for some of the projections going forward in the year, but they seem to give pretty reasonable weights to what has happened thus far during the year.
The Rangers have slid recently largely due to their heavy offensive decline.
They have the Rangers as #2 in fielding — no one had that in their pre-season predictions.
They have the Rangers as a .510+ winner going forward — again, no one had anything like that in the pre-season.
The only real issue I can tell is that the rankings don’t seem to account for the fact that the AL East will beat up on itself while Texas and Anaheim can beat up on Oakland and Seattle.
jeez
i haven’t been following how bad the Indians are.
They almost HAVE to trade Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez.

I think I’d rather give up a couple prospects for Lee and pay him $9M with the money saved from not picking up Padilla’s option than spending that same amount on Ben Sheets and keeping my prospects.
Tough call though…I’m guessing Feliz or Perez would have to be included in the deal.

Freaking Angels.
I know they are a better team than they were the first couple months of the season due to injuries, but come on!
If current percentages held, the Rangers would miss the playoffs (90.5 wins), finishing second to the Angels (95.7 wins) in the West and the Red Sox (94.7 wins) in the Wild Card.

Daniels has nowhere to hide right now.
His team is in contention, it has a glaring need and he has a boatload of prospects with positional logjams all over the place.
He has no excuse not to make a trade and he’s either going to be exposed as the fraud I suspect he is or he’s finally going to earn his stripes.

by Josey Wales on Jul 23, 2009 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions
So
Either Daniels trades for an OBP machine that crushes lefties, or he’s exposed as a fraud.
On a team that is 3 games back of first place, can’t add salary, and has a young group that is designed to compete over the next few years rather than this year.
Let’s say the Nats ask for Chris Davis in exchange for Nick Johnson, with the Nats paying all Johnson’s salary.
If Daniels doesn’t do that, he’s exposed as a fraud? Wouldn’t Nolan be exposed as a fraud, as well? I mean, you say he has the final decision on those sorts of things, right?
And since Hank F. Blalock is going to play every day, aren’t you basically asking for Daniels to go out and get a platoon DH?
If not Johnson, then who do you think is a reasonable target?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 23, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Adam,
It’s time for you, Jamey and all of JD’s “supporters” to stop protecting him.
We are about to find out if he’s worth a damn and there is nowhere to run.
If he ever wants the players in the room to stop treating him like dogshat on their cleats or local media to stop asking if the organization would be better off with a fern in his office or the huge throngs of fans like myself who have been turned off by the organization (see attendance down 600,000 last year from 2005), he needs to do something this year, that helps the big league team win.
He built this offense and now he needs to fix it. Hoping it is going to get better is not a strategy.
The little bird with the Ivy League degree has been out of the nest for 3.5 years now, let’s see if he can finally fly.

I'm not protecting him
I’m also not sure, though, that going out and giving up good young talent to get a platoon DH for a team that is 3 games out in the West is a smart strategy.
And I don’t think it makes sense to use that as a litmus test. Although if it appeared likely that a move were going to be made, rather than quite unlikely, then I guess you wouldn’t be quite so dogmatic on whether or not it proves anything.
Still, I have to assume that, once no move is made by the trade deadline, he’ll be fired, right? Nolan will see that he’s not worth a damn and axe him for not doing something as simple as moving some magic beans for a bat…surely that’s the reality, right?
by Adam J. Morris on Jul 23, 2009 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions
We both know that this team is not adding significant payroll
which means JD has to pry somebody away from a team that’s out of contention, along the lines of a Gomes or Sheffield (who would come cheaply).
Am I advocating those names specifically? No, they’re just examples because we’re not getting NJohnson or Holliday.
Per your take on what Nolan will do….he left the offense up to JD. He’ll observe, suggest and then implement change if deemed necessary.

Yes it does have a glaring need
But we don’t have the resources (ie. money) to acquire that need. The only way we would be able to is if we shipped off a veteran like padilla or Blalock which would only send a brutal message to the club and probably do more harm than good.

You can pick up somebody cheap
but that player is not going to be NJohnson or Holliday.
They’re not going to give up Blalock but they may give up Padilla to clear space. The sudden emergence of Tommy Hunter makes this a possibility.
I remember Nolan saying last year after the Rangers whiffed at the trade deadline that he was “extremely disappointed” and he promptly went out and fired his pitching coaches on the evening of another dramatic walk-off win.
Little Boy Donuts will bring some kind of trade to Nolan for approval and if he’s smart, it will be a good one.

That somebody cheap isn't going to be the difference maker you make them out to be
And this club is not going to get rid of Padilla because of Tommy Hunter. You know how bad that would sit in the clubhouse. Contending teams don’t sell off veterans who are producing because it sends a very bad message and vibe throughout the clubhouse which can leak out onto the field. As we’ve seen this club seems very closeknit and doing something to cause a rift in the clubhouse may have negative effects regardless who is brought in because of the move.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
It's difficult for me to believe
this team would give up pitching but as far as affecting the clubhouse, it’d be Padilla instead of Blalock who left.
Baseball line-ups are funny because so much is related to chemistry and what one batter does (see Manny Ramirez or Milton Bradley) can make a huge, huge difference on everybody else.
The Rangers desperately need that one hitter who gets on base and mashes leftys and it doesn’t really matter if he plays defense.
That shouldn’t be that hard to find. I realize JD has economic handcuffs (some of which are his own fault) and that we won’t see somebody with a big salary (like Manny) but that shouldn’t be the excuse not to make a move and (vomit blood) hope this offense improves the rest of the way.
Stop protecting JD.

How come you give him no credit for the Carlos Lee trade?
If this is the end-all-be-all of GM ranking, then how come he didn’t settle it with that incredible deadline deal?
I guarantee he is looking to make a similar trade, but a GM’s job should never be to trade for a player (or trade a player) no matter what. Obviously you have to agree with this right (see Soriano trade)?
If the market and other teams are not presenting a feasible option, then JD has the obligation to say “no,” right Josey?

On Daniels
The guy made some boneheaded moves. Clearly.
We gave him a year or two of on-the-job training.
I think about it like I think about my 401K. Yeah, the over the last two year it’s value plumetted by 40%, but now it could be considered undervalued and will (hopefully) only go up from here.
At this point, changing would be like selling low on a player. We’d be dumping a GM that seems to have figured some things out, and starting all over with someone who may or may not improve things.
Is it really worth it when we’re seemingly this close and on the right up-ward trend?
Trickman
This is another test for JD’s competence and it’s something we need to know going forward.
He appears to have done well on the Tex Trade but he was dealing a HOF caliber player in his prime with 1.5 years left on his contract to a team with a GM who was on his way out the door and didn’t really give a damn about the future.
Let’s see if JD can make a trade that helps the big league team win now.

Still overly harsh I think.
A-Gon + – Eaton (06)
Danks – McCarthy (07)
Sosa (07)
Jennings (08)
All failures — but there is a very clear trend-line going up. The worst moves were early on (Eaton), followed by slightly less worse moves (McCarthy), followed by even less worse moves (Sosa) etc.
Atleast we don’t have Minaya or Moore as our GM — then we’d truly be fucked because we’d have traded Cruz for Francouer or Mike Jacobs at this point…
I like to look at it in the light that, given Hicks history and some other GMs in baseball, we could do much much worse with our GM.
Like the financial world, the past can only give you certain information towards the future. When that information is failure mixed with strong foundation building with clear growth trends, then that typically means that you’re on the right course.
I haven’t followed the Rangers since the 70s (being 25 has it’s limitations), but this is the most excited I have been for the club since I was 12 (1996).

Seriously.
F the hell out of Detroit.
That series angered me for like a week this year, AND last year.
i'm still upset

I went to Boston for my honeymoon in '08
On Patriots day, my wife and I wore Rangers uniforms to Fenway.
I had lived just 4 blocks away at Park Drive while attending Boston U from 03-06.
Rangers got their ass kicked, and we got boo’d out of the stadium. Only to follow that series with a sweep in Detroit.
I had thought the Rangers could be sleeper candidates, but they didn’t show anything at all until May — at which point they were already out of the race.
I’ve been giving my BU buddies so much shit about this sweep.
Best. Week. Ever.
I lived on Bay State Rd next to the BU Admissions Office
you had some balls going to Fenway in a Rangers jersey.
we're from Texas

i can't wait for the Angels series in August
I actually feel like the Rangers are in the Angels’ heads for the first time in forever. They’re 2-7 against us this season, and we’ve been able to stick around despite the Angels going 9-1 of late (and 30-14 since late-May).
I’m actually really looking forward to that series.
Greatest Inventions Ever? 1. TiVO, 2. Boobs, 3. Baseball
that's cheating
to no mention 16 of those runs came in 1 game. 6 runs in 2 games is not that impressive if you take the 16 run game out

Just got my tix
for the next BOS series at RBIA. August 15th is going to be a great day: Everton/Arsenal season opener, fantasy football draft at Hooters on Collins and another win over Douche Beckett.
Purgatory's kind of like the in-betweeny one. You weren't really shit, but you weren't all that great either. Like Tottenham.
Everton will be in the top 4 this year

Everton
Even so, they’ll still be the second-best team on Merseyside! :)
I do think they have a chance to crack the top four (as do Man City) as Arsenal looks ripe for the taking, and United’s probably gotten a little worse.

I dunno
I’m back and forth on the Gunners. I’m hoping they stumble, but I’ve never been as high on Adebayor as everyone else, and I think Arshavin is in for a huge season.

Arsenal
I like Adebayor, though I think Arshavin and Walcott may make up the loss.
Arsenal’s big problem is that they’re just not spending enough to keep up with United or Chelsea, much less Man City. Even Liverpool, which was supposedly cash-strapped, has spent 18 million pounds on one player, and according to their manager, have enough for one more quality signing without having to sell anyone.

Why did you post the fucking WC standings?
It’s fucking July!!!! The team fades in the summer heat! AMIRITE?
What’s your next act?!? Pissing on the Virgin Mary?!?!?!!
Holy crap!!!
The fighting Hillmans have crapped the bed for a 9 game losing streak, and CLE is STILL worse than them.
