Matt Purke update
Jeff Wilson has a Matt Purke update at the S-T blog. Most relevant part:
TCU remains in the picture, though the Rangers and Purke's camp are anticipating that a deal will get done.
Purke supposedly wants a major league deal, but I don't see Texas doing that. I'm guessing he signs for about $4.5 million on August 17.

Believe me, I want him to sign with the Rangers.
It’s just nice to know I’ll be able to still see him if he doesn’t sign.

I'm still pretty certain a deal gets done
I don’t believe the Rangers drafted him without knowing how much money he was wanting which means that they should be able to afford him at least. And if they can afford him, there is no way JD doesn’t want to add a great lefty pitcher into the system. He’s got to love the thought of Perez and Purke rising through the system as much as I do.

I like seeing awesome players in the major leagues
particularly if it means saving the Nationals franchise – which would be great for baseball.
Strassburg is a fascinating player, like him or not. Will he be as great as everyone says? Or will he fade into mediocrity a la Ben McDonald? I’m giddy for the Strassburg era to begin, especially since it won’t be in Seattle.
Go Rice Owls!

Yeah
but Ackley was a nice pickup. How scary would a rotation headed by Strasburg and Hernandez have been? I really thought that Oakland was going to find a way to screw us this year but we got 2 of the top 10 players in the draft. IMO

Seems this whole Aug 17th/over slot system is flawed
when it costs the drafted player his first developmental year in professional baseball.
I don't mind it
If these kids were that concerned with their development they would take the already very generous offerings of a slot deal and go from there.
And as for the teams it kinda puts everyone on a level playing field if they all have to wait till a certain time to sign guys over slot
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Perceived generosity of the current slot system
ignores the big picture of the amateur baseball talent market.

Slot
I think the whole slotting system is a giant joke, most teams go over slot but have to wait until the deadline to do it and it just slows the entire process down.
Either create a hard slotting system with no exceptions or get rid of it.

They always waited until the last minute
They used to wait until the day before they started their college classes, so instead of waiting until Aug. 15 they waited until the end of August.
The Rangers have rolled up the welcome mat and bludgeoned the Angels with it. - Josh Lewin
This makes me crazy
I really hate to see all the lost development time. I have a hard time faulting the kids holding out, because a significant portion of them will never have success in the majors. The money from that first post draft contract will be more than what a lot of them will ever make in the pros .
They have to address this in the CBA somehow. Either drop the slotting browbeating or make slotting enforceable.
Since the August 17th signing date doesn't apply to Scheppers....
Does that mean Bud will hold up signing Schepper’s over slot deal until just before the next draft?

My assumption is he will wait until after 8/17
to see what the players signed for and then try to negotiate in earnest. My guess is the following week he signs.

I wouldn’t mind giving him a major league contract, which will allow the team to spread out his bonus over several years (instead of $4 million up front, they can do something like 3 years/$5 million).
Go Rice Owls!
Yeah
But if you give him one of those I would just as rather wait until after the season so you don’t either burn an option or have to do like we did with Borbon his first year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I believe he would get 4 options
so that really isn’t a problem.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Yeah, but why waste one for only one month of the season..
If he’s not bound by the Aug 17th date, I can’t see any reason not to wait until the season is over.

not doubting you BTW, just curious about the vagaries of the process.
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
The 4th option is just for players
that sign a ML deal. That allows them to be sent to the minors and still have 3 option years left.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
So, if he signs a ML deal in the winter he doesn't get it?
I know he’s being treated a s special case so who knows. I’m assuming the 4th option is just to cover these late-season signings then?
The Texas Rangers have been synonymous with explosive firepower ever since they emptied 130 rounds into Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow in 1934. - Alyssa Milano
right
Scheppers really isn’t a special case. He, along with college seniors, don’t have any college eligibility so there is no need for the Aug deadline. I hope he signs before fall instructs and the fall league.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
No
A player gets a 4th option year if they exhaust their original three option years before they have 5 years as a professional. Which is a guarantee usually for guys who sign ML deals right out of the draft. But also a guy like Tommy Hunter who made it all the way through the system so quick, but who didn’t sign a ML deal when he was drafted, should get that 4th option year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Yeah hed get 4
But like with borbon he went initially to Spokane but then went back to AZ so they didn’t burn that first one. If they hadn’t done that he would be on his 3rd option this year and only have one more left for presumably next year. With a hitter at least he got to play everyday while he was in Spokane.
With Scheppers he may only get a couple starts before having to be pulled back to AZ and so you got to weigh whether delaying signing him is that much worse than him missing out on a couple starts in Spokane or wherever.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I think a ML contract would be detrimental
to our Rule 5 positioning over the next 3 years. Shouldn’t even be entertained by the Rangers, imo, unless it is absolutely the only way to get him signed, and even then I would think twice.
For Purke...........absolutely agree
But for Scheppers I think he will be here quick enough a ML contract wouldn’t kill us too much.

Despite my pure
hatred for Buehrle Perfect Games always give me a little of a chill. It is seemingly the rarest occurrence in all of baseball. There have been more 500th HRs, 3000th hits, cycles, triple plays. That is why Larsen’s PG in the 56’ series is the single best one game performance in the history of baseball in my eyes.

Yeah
Perfect games and Four Home Run games are easily the two events where I stop and admire for a minute. They are the type of events where one can go ten years between seeing one and not be surprised.
What is weird is that the list of 4 home run game hitters is amusing – several players who simply weren’t that good just had a hot day. The list of perfect game pitchers is different. There are a few Len Barkers (former Ranger) and Mike Witts (against the Rangers), but mostly you have guys who were among the best pitchers in the league at the time.
Go Rice Owls!
I remember
Mark Whiten was the first 4-homer game I was cognisant of. I was probably 13 or so at the time and I just thought it was the greatest accomplishment of all time. For the next two or three years I followed Mark Whiten’s box scores on a daily basis only to be severely disappointed.

Based solely on the descriptions I've read..
Can anyone recall a more impressive catch that saved a no-no or perfect game? Rusty’s was nice, but an over-the-wall catch sounds even better.

I can't think of a better one
he was on the dead sprint and leaped and it wasn’t a ball that would have hit the top of the wall this thing would have cleared by a good 12-18 inches, catches it and as hes falling down starts bobbling it but hangs on.

Another thing that makes it so amazing
Is the fact the guy who caught it, Wise, was a 9th inning defensive replacement. So he hadn’t played at all, had probably just stretched out, and Kapler was the first batter.
