2009 Trade Deadline Dynamics

Jayson Stark just posted a story about trade deadline myths.  A lot of it we already know (wherein "we" is assumed to include people who read Jamey, the Jasons, and most any other local educated baseball commenter) but one line particularly stood out, and was duly noted on mlbtr, stating that Matt Holliday, Jarrod Washburn and Jack Wilson are all "likely to zip through waivers" next month.

What?  Really?  Matt Holliday hasn't shown a ton of power this year, but i would think a team wouldn't mind adding his plus defense and solid plate discipline for the simple cost of his salary.  In fact, I would venture to guess that even the Rangers may place a claim, if he fell to them, if for no other reason than to foil the hated A's.  The same almost certainly applies to Washburn (why give up prospects for Lee if Washburn could be had for a waiver claim?).

I know Stark isn't exactly Professor Baseball, but he is employed by ESPN and he is probably fairly plugged in.  So this comment kind of blows my mind.  It also makes me want to take back my arguments with AJM about Millwood's trade value, because if these guys are probably going to "zip" through waivers, and if decent names like LaRoche and Betancourt are being traded for lower tier prospects, then this is definitely an extreme buyer's market.  I'm just glad the Rangers' 2007 didn't try to happen in 2009...

yeah well the deal in September is

you can’t just have them for there salary, if a team like the Rangers put in a claim on Holliday the A’s would simply pull him back off the waivers, hence the term revocable waivers, then the A’s and the Rangers could work out a trade for Holliday.

But they "won't zip through waivers"

Signature! I don't need no stinking signature!!

true

that actually starts in August, and yes, the A’s would pull him back before simply giving him to a division rival, but my point is that I just can’t see them actually slipping through waivers (except Jack Wilson…that I can see).

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

eh

Why would the A’s care? If they’re out of the race, the Rangers claiming Holliday isn’t that big a deal and it saves them some money (which the A’s always need). I guess Texas doesn’t get the draft picks.

The point clark is raising is a good one. Stark is wrong that Holliday would slip through waivers – must have been some sort of oversight. If that were the case, then why would St Louis even be thinking about trading Brett Wallace for him? But as for many other players I wouldn’t be surprised.

Padilla and Blalock should easily slip through waivers and allow the Rangers to trade them up until August 31. But any player who would demand a large trade return (Holliday, Lee, Halladay, Millwood) won’t pass through, because passing through means that every team could have had him for free (just taking on their salary) and passed on it.

One thing is for sure

there is a ton of specualtion going on at this time of year and not much of it includes the Rangers.

With how the trade market is looking

im really not all that upset about it. I dont see us making a deal and im okay with that.

You are obsessed with bodily wastes A turd being held under my nose, this team being a steaming pile, Jonny Donuts having a stinky diaper, the front office pissing themselves, the team crapping the bed…

I think you should seek counselling.

I think the Rangers make a trade

Don’t really have any good rationale, other than the fact that JD rarely, if ever, shows his hand. He tends to be very quiet leading up to deadlines, drafts, signing periods, everything.

That said, this year he has seemed a little vocal about the Rangers not adding salary. Maybe a little too vocal. I can think of two reasons for this. One, because the team isn’t going to make a trade and he doesn’t want people to be disappointed at the deadline – but that isn’t much like him, and saying you aren’t make a deal because Hicks is broke is more frustrating than just not making a deal. But the alternative is that he is planning something, but wants the Angels & M’s to think that the Rangers aren’t working on anything. That way when a deal goes down, they don’t have time to adjust and make a move themselves.

i agree

i think Cliff Lee comes to Texas for Feliz or Holland….

Lee for Holland

Ballsy move, but I think I’d pull the trigger.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Feliz + Harrison + Beavan + Engel Beltre.

That might get it done.

Maybe.

Depends on how they view those guys.

Probably have to throw in a more highly thought of guy in place of either Beavan or Harrison to get it done. Maybe sub Ross in for Harrison or Madrigal for one of ’em if they like him better or something.

with Holland as the centerpiece

what others would you guess would need to be in the package?

I think Holland, Madrigal, Beltre is a good package. I don’t think they would get more than that. And I’d probably do it. If I had to add a Boscan, Pimental, or similar arm to close the deal, I’d do that too.

No Feliz, no Smoak, and no Perez though.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Heh, I'd rather trade any of those dudes than Holland.

But really I’d rather trade none of them, even if it means sitting out the trade deadline this year and passing on dudes like Lee, who I love.

Yeah

But that’s what’ll kill you. Can’t hold on to everybody.

I’d trade Feliz over Holland, and if that deal you proposed came to my desk, I’d probably take a mind-clearing shit and sign off.

However, my preferred plan would be to wait till the offseason and buy low on Webb.

Its sad

but if that were to happen, it could turn into the Bartolo Colon trade for the Indians all over again.

I think that is what Cleveland wants

but I think they will be disappointed. I think it is a buyers market.

I think...

…that if JD is just throwing up a smokescreen with the whole salary thing, it’s much more likely that it’s to help drive down the cost (either in money or talent) for the player he/they want than it is to make sure the Angels and M’s aren’t working on anything. I don’t think any of these (AL West) teams can add one guy and run away with the division outside of maybe the Angels and Halladay.

Ugh.

We don’t need to sell off the farm for a bullpen piece.

And we have Feliz in the minors.

Not to mention Madrigal.

Our surplus of arms is starting to hit the high minors/majors, and a huge benefit of this is that we’ll no longer have to go out and overpay for bullpen arms. We can just draw on guys like Moscoso, Feliz, Holland, Madrigal, Kiker, etc.
