New Jeff Wilson mailbag up

Jeff Wilson has a new mailbag column up...

Stuff on why Ian Kinsler is still hitting leadoff, a question from world-trotting Michael Hodson on trading for Nick Johnson, and queries on the status of draftee signings...

One thing that confuses me, though, is this from Wilson, wondering about the lineup if Johnson were added:

If the Rangers trade for Johnson, do Hank Blalock, Andruw Jones, David Murphy and Nelson Cruz all become platoon players?

Similarly, he asks elsewhere if having David Murphy in the lineup every day is worth benching Cruz.

Why, at this point, would Cruz be the guy to be platooned or sit, instead of Marlon Byrd?

I agree about Byrd...

He should be platooned with Murphy in left. I’d go with Murphy, Hamilton, and Cruz against most righties.

The love...

for Byrd over Cruz drives me crazy. I don’t understand why Wash loves Byrd so much and will play him over Nellie or put him in the cleanup spot over Cruz when they are both in the lineup. Look at their #‘s. Plus the fact that Byrd swings at every pitch thrown to him and it’s obvious who the better hitter and option for the middle of the lineup is right?

This would be my lineup right now :

DH Murphy
3B Young
LF Hamilton
2B Kinsler
1B Blalock
RF Cruz
CF Byrd
CA Salty/TT
SS Andrus

Hit Andrus leadoff against LH pitching and put Jones in there for Murphy or Blalock. I don’t think Jones should be the everyday DH. That lineup allows you to rotate the OFers for a “day off” at DH as well. It’s not difficult. Right now that is the best lineup this team can put out there imho.

And again, stay away from Nick Johnson. He solves nothing.

that lineup order

is too white at the top.

Michael Young > Steve Garvey.
Nelson Cruz >Greg Nettles.
Elvis Andrus > Willie McGee.
Ian Kinsler > Darryl Strawberry.
i dunno, that's just really random.

And yet still funny.

I'd go

Murphy LF
Young 3b
Kinsler 2b
Hamilton CF
Cruz RF
Blalock 1B
Jones DH
Salty C
Andrus SS

here's how you spin it:

You want borbon to come up and there is just a glut of OFers (particularly CFers) at that point. You think Marlon Byrd is good enough to become an every day CF and you don’t think it is fair to him to be platooning in TX.

and you hope Wash/Byrd buy it.

Nope.

With the way Ron inexplicably continues to use Byrd as some sort of mashing clean up hitter that he obviously isn’t, its only a matter of time before it costs us big time. Especially when this thing gets a lot closer come September.

Byrd shouldn’t be sniffing anywhere close to the cleanup spot. Should be batting 7th, at best 6th.

Speaking of trades

Rockies get Rafael Betancourt from Cleveland for Hi-A righty Connor Graham. High strikeout, high walk type; Sickels had him as a B- and the Rockies #5 prospect coming into the season.

CJ

should have similar, if not slightly higher value than Betancourt, right?

I have to think so

plus isnt he more of a strikeout pitcher as well?

You are obsessed with bodily wastes A turd being held under my nose, this team being a steaming pile, Jonny Donuts having a stinky diaper, the front office pissing themselves, the team crapping the bed…

I think you should seek counselling.

Betancourt has ~$1.5M remaining this year

and a $5.4M club option for next with incentives. CJ has 2 arb years left that probably equals the $5.4M.

Theoretically

What would a player like Nick Johnson cost?

by BuckyB on Jul 23, 2009 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

B or B- prospect.

I’d think a Kasey Kiker-type and a low level player would get it done.

I would like that

If we swapped Byrd, that would help with the salary, too. But that’s just me.
