I'm crazy for Telis
Gomez, Tullis, Pimentel, Madrigal, Strop, Hurley, Smith all deserve consideration here. This isn’t getting any easier.

I think I've got to go Madrigal here.
I’m to the point with him and watching what he’s done in OKC that I believe he’s good enough to be a succesful major league reliever right now… but personally I still don’t know that he’s got a real shot to develop into a closer. That lack of true closer ceiling kept me from voting for him until now, but I can’t let that concern stop me from voting for him here.
But, jeez. This is hard.
Comparing the guys like Madrigal, Lemon, Vallejo, Smith and Strop who are close but don’t have a lot of ceiling to “Will the ever see A+?”-type lotto tickets like Escobar, Alvarez, Sardinas and Profar is an exercise in insanity.

I went with Madrigal as well
other than the new latin kids, he’s the most likely to make an impact at the ML level of the remaining players, IMO.
He and Feliz in the bullpen in August/September could really really help this team.

I think he means...
Zach Phillips, who currently has an ERA of 0.00 through 14 innings with the Frisco Roughriders. Phillips did, however, have an ERA of 1.23 in the 44 innings he played with the Bakersfield Blaze earlier in the season.
Greg Golson doesn't do extra base hits.

Ahh
you are correct sir. I was going off of the names at the top of shroom’s site where the numbers pop up when you put your mouse over the pitcher’s name.
His ERA is now 2.57 in 7 IP with 2 BB and 11 K’s.
Shroom needs to update his stuff. ;)

updated - happy, Sparky?
Man, the prospect buffet can be a whip to update – about every 3rd time I do it, calendar.net eats my work and craps it back all over my lap. Thus beaten down, I fail to update it in a very timely manner. Two notes occurred to me while I was updating it …
- Robbie Ross’ stats are even better looking than whatever Dirkatron imagines he sees when he looks in a mirror.
- Juan Grullon is on the D.L. – JIC anybody was wondering. So, include him in yer prayers.

Notice the cute little winky face I put at the end of that sentence. I appreciate all of your hard work and your site is the first I look at every morning.
Robbie Ross is a bad man.
I will pray for Mr. Grullon that he may have a fast and thorough recovery from whatever is ailing him.

Kirkman
Wouldn’t have done it without reading the Parks/Cole/MJH piece.
If he’s passing the eyeball test, I’m believing his setbacks are mostly lingering effects of old injuries. I like this player, especially for next year.
He was very solid with consistency in the Cal League. About the only starter in this system who can say that this year.

First really tough one for me
Went Tim Smith. Debated between he, Tullis, Madrigal, Strop, and even Whittleman (due to his latest hot streak).
Went Smith because I think all those guys I debated over were pretty equal and we need some more positional guys on the list.

I'd like to see the list from last year at midseason.
It is amazing how far guys like Christian Santana and Clark Murphy have fallen. I can’t remember where or if they were ranked but they were pretty highly thought of at one point. I guess it just shows the boom/bust ratio. Both are still young but are really struggling right now.

I could see him if a team needed a 5th OF with some speed/defense and didn't want to pay a vet for it.
I could also see one of the lefties going to a team looking to add a cheap LOOGY to their roster and was willing to give one of them a shot in ST to see if it could work.

So, looking at that list...
One sure thing. (Neftali)
A couple of semi-interesting guys we’ll know more about in a few months. (Kirkman, and Whittleman).
A bunch of “meh”-ceilinged potential role-layers. (Gentry, Ousna, Beau Jones, Phillips, Pina.)
And then a few way too raw for anyone to take the plunge guys. (Fabio, The Latin Wind, the Artist Formerly Known as Cristian Santana.)

If John Whittleman continues...
If for the next six weeks, John Whittleman continues with the numbers he’s got in July (.259/.449/.707), he’d very likely be considered among the top 100 prospects in baseball. Note that I don’t in any way expect that to happen. But if he did, he’d be a 22 year old in Double-A with about a .400 OBP, a .900 OPS and have 25-30 home runs for the year who’d have an unbelievable run fresh in the minds of scouts.
And although I mentioned it below, the Rangers also have to make a decision about Pedro Strop, who is signed to a minor league free agent contract. He can become a free agent again after this season unless the Rangers add him to the 40-Man Roster.
Greg Golson doesn't do extra base hits.

I think our lack of 3B prospects leads us to protect him
We can always DFA him if we need to but having a guy of Youngs age at 3B and no true 3B prospect in the upper levels behind him is a scary thought.

Pina
I think he has the ability to hit enough to be a solid defensive backup catcher. Defensively he plays well enough right now to be a teams el-cheapo backup.
I’d say pina is one of those players you’d need to see play to appreciate what he does, he isn’t a super-stud but i think he’s got enough potential that he could get snagged.
Perhaps tons of upside was a poor way to put it.
